Renault 5 Supercinq GT Turbo: the turbocharged foil
The Supercinq GT Turbo is the choice for a more theatrical experience. Renault’s official heritage museum describes it as a sporty version that competed directly with the 205 GTI and Golf GTI. The museum records 160,000 Phase 1 and Phase 2 GT Turbo vehicles produced between 1985 and 1991, a useful indicator of its historical importance without implying that all surviving cars are equally common or affordable today.

Turbocharging changes the way the car delivers excitement. Instead of the naturally aspirated 16V’s progressive rise in urgency, the Renault is defined by boost building and the sense that the car becomes more forceful as the turbo comes on. That character is the reason to choose it, not a claim that it is objectively faster in every condition.
What to inspect
- Turbo system: look for smoke, oil contamination, shaft play, boost leaks and evidence of poor cooling or lubrication.
- Cooling: verify that the radiator, hoses, fan operation and temperature control are healthy before any spirited driving.

Who should buy one
Pick the GT Turbo when turbo response, period rivalry and visual drama matter more than the Scirocco’s smoother, naturally aspirated delivery. It is less suitable if you want the simplest possible mechanical ownership experience.
Volkswagen Golf Mk2 GTI: the closest family alternative
The Mk2 Golf GTI is the most straightforward substitute for a Scirocco 16V. It shares Volkswagen’s period engineering language, front-wheel-drive layout and broad enthusiast familiarity, while offering a more conventional hatchback body. There is no single Mk2 GTI specification: eight-valve and 16-valve versions, body styles and market equipment differ. Compare the exact engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension and trim rather than assuming every GTI is equivalent to the Scirocco GTX 16V. A well-preserved car with clear history is preferable to a nominally higher-spec example that has been modified without records.

Why it is easier to understand
- Familiar controls: the upright hatchback layout is easier to live with daily than the Scirocco’s tighter rear accommodation.
- Parts knowledge: the model’s popularity means more owners and specialists understand common maintenance issues, although availability still depends on country and specification.
- Choice: buyers can select between different engine and body configurations instead of treating the 16V Scirocco as the only Volkswagen benchmark.
Who should buy one
Choose the Golf if you want the closest Volkswagen-family experience with more practical hatchback usability. It is also the sensible starting point for a buyer who likes the Scirocco’s era but needs easier access to the rear seats and luggage area.
Ford Escort RS Turbo: a documented turbo alternative
The Escort RS Turbo adds a Ford interpretation of the 1980s performance hatch: a familiar compact hatchback body with turbocharged intent and a clear competition connection. FIA homologation records list a 1,597.2 cc specification and a 1 June 1985 homologation date.
That documentation matters because RS-badged cars are often modified, replicated or assembled from mixed parts. The identity of the shell, engine, trim and paperwork should be checked as a package. A car that merely wears RS Turbo graphics is not equivalent to a properly documented example.

- Identity: reconcile chassis numbers, period paperwork, engine number and homologation-related equipment.
- Turbo health: check oil smoke, boost behavior, leaks and signs of repeated overheating.
- Structure: inspect sills, floor sections, suspension mounting areas and previous repairs from underneath.
- Modifications: ask for records of boost increases, engine swaps, aftermarket management and brake upgrades.
The Escort is a good answer for a buyer who wants turbocharged character but prefers Ford’s hatchback proportions to the Renault’s smaller, more delicate feel.

Opel Kadett E GSi and Vauxhall Astra GSi 16V: the German 16-valve route

Compared with the Scirocco, these cars generally present a squarer, more practical hatchback profile. Their appeal is less about coupé styling and more about a serious German 16-valve specification in a body that can handle everyday luggage and rear passengers more naturally.
How to compare one with a Scirocco
- Engine: verify whether the car is an ordinary GSi or a 16V/GTE derivative; badges alone are unreliable.
- Rust: inspect wheel arches, sills, floors, hatch apertures and suspension pick-up areas.
- Drivetrain: test clutch take-up, gearbox synchros and differential noise when cold and hot.
- Originality: record the correct wheels, bumpers, seats, instruments and engine-management parts before judging value.
This is the best direction if you want the Scirocco’s naturally aspirated, high-revving concept but need a more conventional hatchback silhouette.
Toyota Corolla GT: a Japanese alternative with homologation history
The Toyota Corolla GT is a less obvious but credible choice. Exact road-car equipment differs by market, so identify the chassis code and local specification before comparing it with European cars.

The Corolla’s attraction is its Japanese interpretation of a compact three-door performance car: generally straightforward proportions, a useful hatch and a different parts and club network from the European choices. It will not reproduce the Scirocco’s Volkswagen interior or coupé styling, but it can provide a rarer ownership story without relying on turbocharged power.
Checks specific to a scarce import
- Confirm the AE82 or AE92 identity from the chassis plate and registration documents.
- Check that replacement engine, gearbox and electrical components match the car’s market specification.
- Establish how easily body panels, trim, glass and suspension parts can be sourced in your country.

A purchase inspection that works for any of these cars
Classic hot-hatch condition is highly variable. A low odometer reading or freshly painted body cannot substitute for structural inspection and documentation. Arrange to see the car cold, allow time for a lift inspection and budget for an independent specialist if the model is unfamiliar.
- Verify identity and history. Match the chassis number, engine identity, registration documents, period invoices and stated trim. Record every engine, gearbox and body modification.
- Inspect the shell. Use a lift to examine sills, floors, wheel arches, suspension mounts, inner wings, bulkheads, hatch apertures and drain points. Look for uneven seams, fresh underseal and paint overspray that can hide repairs.
- Assess the cooling system. Check radiator condition, hoses, fan switch, thermostat behavior and evidence of coolant loss. Overheating can damage both naturally aspirated engines and turbocharged units.
- Check fuel and ignition systems. Hard starting, unstable idle, fuel smell and hesitation may indicate degraded hoses, injectors, pumps, sensors or wiring. Cars that have been stored for long periods deserve extra scrutiny.
- Evaluate the gearbox. Test every gear during cold and warm driving, including downshifts and reverse. Synchro wear, clutch drag and differential noise can turn a cheap-looking car into an expensive project.
- For turbo cars, test boost health. Watch for smoke on start-up and overrun, unusual whine, oil in intake plumbing, boost leaks or inconsistent power. Ask when the turbo, oil lines and intercooler plumbing were last serviced.
- Check brakes, steering and suspension. Inspect discs, calipers, flexible lines, bushes, ball joints, dampers and wheel bearings. Uneven tyre wear can reveal geometry or structural problems.
- Audit originality and parts supply. Photograph trim, wheels, seats, instruments and engine-bay components. Confirm that missing model-specific parts are available before committing to a restoration.
