A four-seat convertible can mean two very different things: a genuinely useful open-air car, or a two-seat roadster with a pair of emergency seats behind the front passengers. The distinction matters. The 2026 U.S. market has only a handful of new models that combine a folding roof with four seating positions, and their rear-seat space ranges from relatively usable to almost nominal.
The 2026 Ford Mustang Convertible is the best all-around choice because it offers the lowest entry price among the major options, a real rear seat, rear-wheel drive, and an available V8. The Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet is the better luxury car, while the BMW 4 Series Convertible is the sharper driver’s choice. The MINI is the affordable urban option, and the Lexus LC 500 is the special-event grand tourer.

1. 2026 Ford Mustang Convertible: Best Overall
The Mustang is the easiest four-seat convertible to recommend. It is less expensive than the European luxury alternatives, has a more useful rear seat than most of them, and is available with the kind of V8 engine that has become increasingly rare.

- Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive
- Trunk: 11.4 cubic feet
- Rear-seat dimensions: 35.7 inches of headroom, 29.2 inches of legroom, and 44.6 inches of shoulder room
Those rear seats are still a better fit for children or shorter adults than for four full-size adults on a long trip, but the Mustang has the most convincing claim to being a usable four-seater in this group. Its trunk is also larger than the spaces in the MINI, Mercedes, and Lexus.
The 2026 EcoBoost Convertible is offered only in Premium trim, according to Ford’s order information. That keeps the range relatively simple, although options can push the final price well beyond the advertised starting figure. The cabin materials also do not feel as expensive as those in the BMW or Mercedes-Benz.
Choose the Mustang if: you want the most practical new four-seat convertible, need occasional rear-seat space, or specifically want a V8.
2. 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet: Best Luxury Convertible
The CLE Cabriolet is the strongest choice for buyers who care more about quiet cruising, comfort, technology, and rear-seat usability than outright value. Its triple-layer power soft top, available Airscarf neck-level heating, and Aircap wind-management system make it better suited to relaxed year-round use than many convertibles.

| CLE 300 4MATIC Cabriolet | $68,050 | 255 hp | All-wheel drive |
| CLE 450 4MATIC Cabriolet | $77,400 | 375 hp | All-wheel drive |
| AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet | $84,600 | 443 hp | AMG Performance 4MATIC+ |
All three versions seat four and have 9.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The CLE 300 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with mild-hybrid assistance. The CLE 450 moves to a turbocharged inline-six, while the AMG CLE 53 adds more aggressive performance hardware and a hybrid-assisted inline-six.
The rear seat is not spacious, but independent testing found it more accommodating than the BMW 4 Series Convertible’s. Access is easier with the roof lowered, which is also useful when installing a child seat. With the top raised, rear visibility is poor, so the available surround-view camera is more than a luxury gimmick.

The CLE 450 is the best version for most buyers. It provides a substantial performance upgrade over the CLE 300 without reaching AMG pricing.
3. BMW 4 Series Convertible: Best Driver’s Car
The BMW 4 Series Convertible provides the widest range of luxury performance configurations here. Buyers can choose rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, a turbocharged four-cylinder or inline-six, and even the 523-hp M4 Competition Convertible.

- M440i xDrive Convertible: 386 hp, all-wheel drive, $77,200
- M4 Competition Convertible: 523 hp, all-wheel drive, approximately $98,600
The 430i models use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder; the M440i versions use a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. Every version uses an eight-speed automatic, and there is no manual-transmission option.
BMW quotes 13.6 cubic feet of trunk space with the roof raised and 10.6 cubic feet with it lowered. That is a useful amount for a convertible, but the trunk is less practical than the coupe’s. The rear seat is also one of the tightest in this group. If adult passengers will regularly sit in back, a 3 Series sedan is a much better BMW choice.
Choose the 4 Series Convertible if: steering response, acceleration, drivetrain choice, and rear-wheel-drive character matter more than rear-seat comfort.
4. 2026 MINI Cooper Convertible: Best Small Convertible
The MINI Cooper Convertible is the least expensive premium-branded option and the easiest one to drive in crowded cities. Its compact dimensions make parking simple, while the soft top preserves the MINI’s distinctive personality.

- Made of Diecast with some plastic parts
- Approximate starting price: $34,600
- Engines: 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
- Output: 161, 201, or 228 hp, depending on trim
- Transmission: Seven-speed dual-clutch automatic
- Rear legroom: 30.8 inches
- Rear headroom: 39.0 inches
- Cargo capacity: 5.2 cubic feet
The MINI officially seats four, but that description needs qualification. The rear seats are primarily occasional-use seats and are largely unsuitable for adults. The small door opening can also make it difficult to install a child seat. This is a car for couples who occasionally carry children or friends—not a realistic four-adult road-trip vehicle.
The Cooper S supplies more performance than the standard Cooper, while the John Cooper Works Convertible produces 228 hp and costs approximately $49,000. The MINI makes the most sense when its small footprint and style are more important than luggage space.
5. 2026 Lexus LC 500 Convertible: Best Grand Tourer
The LC 500 Convertible is the most distinctive and expensive car here. Its naturally aspirated V8, dramatic styling, and quiet long-distance character give it an appeal that the turbocharged alternatives cannot quite duplicate.
- Starting price: $109,300, including Lexus’s stated delivery, processing, and handling fee
- Engine: Naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8
- Power: 471 hp
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive
- Trunk: 3.4 cubic feet
- Rear legroom: 28 inches
The LC’s rear seats are technically full seats, but the 28 inches of rear legroom and tiny trunk make it a lifestyle-oriented grand tourer rather than a practical family car. The rear compartment is best treated as extra seating for short journeys or additional storage when nobody is sitting there.
For 2026, Lexus also offers an Inspiration Series limited to 350 convertibles in North America. It adds distinctive trim and the Wind exterior color. The LC is the right choice for someone who values the V8 experience, craftsmanship, and presence more than utility.
How usable are the rear seats?
Rear-seat labels can be misleading in a convertible. Long front doors, restricted roof mechanisms, short seat cushions, and limited legroom all affect whether passengers can actually get in and stay comfortable.

| Model | Rear-seat verdict |
|---|---|
| Ford Mustang | Most usable; suitable for children and some shorter adults |
| Mercedes CLE | Best luxury rear seat; still tight for adults |
| BMW 4 Series | Occasional-use seating; notably tighter than a 3 Series sedan |
| MINI Cooper | Mostly child-use seating with difficult access |
| Lexus LC 500 | Nominal rear seat with very limited legroom |
If you are buying for a child, test the exact car with the child seat you intend to use. A rear-facing seat can be especially difficult to fit because convertible rear seats are shallow and access is restricted. The CLE is easier to reach with the roof down, while the MINI’s small opening is a known problem area.

Check trunk capacity with the roof in the position you use
Convertible trunk figures are not always directly comparable. BMW lists 13.6 cubic feet with the roof raised but 10.6 cubic feet with it lowered. Mercedes lists 9.6 cubic feet, MINI lists 5.2, and Lexus lists only 3.4. If you plan to drive with the roof down, use the reduced figure where one is available.
Do not assume the BMW has a retractable hardtop
The current BMW 4 Series Convertible uses a retractable four-panel roof. It is not the old-style retractable-hardtop design. The Mustang, MINI, CLE, and Lexus also use fabric soft tops.
Confirm the model year and destination charge
Model-year listings are already overlapping. BMW’s U.S. website is showing 2027 4 Series Convertibles, while MINI’s specifications page is labeled 2026 but includes a 2027 reference in its FAQ. Check the window sticker and build sheet rather than relying on a search-result price. Also confirm whether destination is included: Lexus’s published LC price includes its stated delivery, processing, and handling fee, while other listings may present charges separately.
Which discontinued convertibles should not be on your new-car shortlist?
The Chevrolet Camaro is not a current new-car alternative. Chevrolet identifies it as discontinued, with the 2024 model year being the final production year. Audi’s A5 Cabriolet is also no longer part of Audi’s current U.S. lineup. Older buying guides that present either model as a new 2026 choice are out of date.
FAQ
What is the best four-seat convertible for most buyers?
The 2026 Ford Mustang Convertible is the best overall choice. It combines the lowest entry price among the major current options with rear-wheel drive, an 11.4-cubic-foot trunk, a more useful rear seat than its rivals, and an available V8.

Which four-seat convertible has the most usable rear seat?
The Ford Mustang has the most usable rear seat overall. Among luxury models, the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet is more accommodating than the BMW 4 Series Convertible, although neither is spacious for adults.
Is the MINI Cooper Convertible a true four-adult car?
Not really. It is certified as a four-seater, but its rear seats are best for children or short trips. The small door opening can also make installing a child seat difficult.
Which current four-seat convertible has a V8?
The Ford Mustang Convertible is available in V8-powered GT variants, while the Lexus LC 500 Convertible uses a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 producing 471 hp. The Mustang is far less expensive; the Lexus is the more luxurious grand tourer.
The Bottom Line
The Ford Mustang Convertible is the best four-seat convertible for most shoppers because it offers the strongest combination of price, rear-seat space, trunk capacity, and performance. Choose the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet for a quieter, more luxurious experience; the BMW 4 Series Convertible for sharper driving dynamics; the MINI Cooper Convertible for compact-city use; and the Lexus LC 500 Convertible for V8-powered grand-touring drama.
Before buying, sit in the rear seats, install any child seat you plan to use, and measure luggage with the roof down. A four-seat convertible is only practical if its rear seats and trunk work for your actual passengers and trips.
