Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no evidence here that U.S. retail tire prices are rising uniformly or by one percentage. The clearest reported changes are manufacturer shipment-price adjustments for Japan in 2026, while Goodyear’s 2026 figures are forecasts about costs—not observed retail prices. For a U.S. buyer, the useful next step is to verify the vehicle’s required tire size and compare itemized installed quotes for the same tire.
What the available price evidence does—and does not—show
“Tire prices” can refer to different things: the cost of raw materials and other inputs, a manufacturer’s price to distributors, or the amount a driver pays a retailer. Those figures are related, but they are not interchangeable. A manufacturer shipment-price adjustment in Japan does not establish what U.S. retailers charge, and a forecast of company costs is not a forecast of a specific tire’s checkout price.
Goodyear’s 2026 cost forecasts
In its 2025 annual report, Goodyear forecast that raw-material costs would provide an approximately $300 million benefit in 2026 compared with 2025, based on spot prices at the time. It also forecast approximately $300 million in annualized 2026 tariff costs on finished goods and raw materials, based on tariff rates then in effect. Goodyear noted that rubber and other commodity prices are historically volatile. These are company forecasts, not measured retail-price changes. Goodyear 2025 annual report
Manufacturer adjustments announced for Japan
Japan Michelin announced an average 3–5% manufacturer shipment-price adjustment for specified product groups in Japan’s domestic market: summer tires effective June 1, 2026, and winter tires effective September 1, 2026. The company cited inflation, raw-material prices, energy, fuel, and transportation costs, and said the adjustment varies by product. Japan Michelin announcement

Bridgestone announced an average 5% manufacturer shipment-price adjustment for tires, tubes, and flaps in Japan’s domestic market, effective September 1, 2026. It cited raw materials, logistics, labor, and energy costs. This, too, concerns manufacturer shipment prices in Japan—not U.S. retail prices. Bridgestone announcement
Taken together, these reports do not support saying that all tires are going up by a single percentage. They describe different companies, markets, channels, and kinds of cost or price information. No matched U.S. retail quotes or authoritative U.S. market-wide price series are established here, so a driver should check current prices for the exact tire size and specification they need.

How to choose the right tire before comparing prices
Start with the vehicle’s recommended size
Check the owner’s manual or the Tire and Loading Information Label on the driver-side door edge or post. NHTSA recommends using the original tire size or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. If the correct size is unclear, ask a tire dealer rather than substituting based on price alone. NHTSA TireWise
Match tire type to driving conditions
- All-season: Designed to handle a variety of conditions.
- Winter: More effective in deep snow.
- Summer: Not suitable for below-freezing conditions or for snow and ice.
- All-terrain: A compromise for drivers who use both roads and off-road surfaces.
These categories describe broad trade-offs, not a substitute for checking the vehicle maker’s recommendation and your local conditions. NHTSA TireWise

- Patented tread pattern: Provides a comfortable and quiet ride
- Efficient fuel-saving tread compound: Offers grip in wet, dry, snow, and ice
- Specially formulated rubber compound and tread features: Low rolling resistance, for eco-friendly driving
- Optimized contact area with the road: Provides reliable tread life
Compare performance, not just the sticker price
For passenger tires, NHTSA’s Uniform Tire Quality Grading System reports treadwear, wet-pavement traction, and temperature resistance. These attributes can help compare tires, but the grades alone do not identify the best tire for every vehicle or driver. Tire design can also affect durability, traction, comfort, handling, and rolling resistance. NHTSA TireWise
Compare the complete installed cost
Once you know the vehicle-recommended size, ask sellers to quote the same tire specification and give you an itemized installed total. Include installation and any other charges in the comparison. A lower tire-only price may not mean a lower total bill once the other items are included. No current U.S. seller quotes or typical installation fees are established here, so request quotes directly and compare like with like.

Think beyond the initial price as well. NHTSA estimates that a 10% reduction in rolling resistance can improve vehicle fuel economy by 1–2%. That estimate does not guarantee a specific saving for an individual vehicle, but it is one reason to consider efficiency alongside purchase price and the tire’s other performance needs. NHTSA says, “Proper tire pressure is the most important part of maintaining your tires.” Check the pressure in every tire, including the spare, at least once a month when the tires are cold, and use the vehicle’s placard or owner’s manual for the correct pressure. Proper inflation affects safety, durability, and fuel consumption. A digital tire pressure gauge can help you take the reading; NHTSA does not endorse a particular model. NHTSA says properly inflated tires can extend average tire life by 4,700 miles. It advises replacing tires when tread is worn to 2/32 inch and stopping use of a tire with damage such as cuts, cracks, bulges, or irregular wear while consulting a professional. Follow the owner’s manual for rotation intervals; NHTSA also says balancing new tires at installation is important. NHTSA TireWise NHTSA tire maintenance guidance
Why tire condition matters beyond cost
NHTSA reported 511 motor vehicle traffic fatalities in tire-related crashes in 2024. Its TireWise page also says U.S. vehicle owners purchase approximately 340 million replacement tires annually; that figure appears in the context of a page noting more than 300 million U.S. vehicles in 2024, and is not presented as a separately dated 2024 tire-purchase count.
