Android Auto 12.3: What Changed, How to Update, and What to Expect

Android Auto 12.3 brought no major visible feature overhaul. Here’s when it arrived, how to update through Google Play, and why it may not solve car connection problems.

Android Auto 12.3 was a 2024 release, not a feature-packed redesign. Contemporary reports found no major visible changes; the update appeared to focus mainly on stability and compatibility. It rolled out through Google Play in late June and early July 2024, and it is no longer a current release as of September 2026. If you still need to install it, use Google Play rather than hunting for an APK.

What Android Auto 12.3 changed

Android Auto projects selected phone functions—such as navigation, calls, messages and compatible media apps—onto a compatible car display. Google did not publish a detailed feature changelog for version 12.3. Contemporary coverage reported few or no obvious interface changes, with likely bug fixes and behind-the-scenes stability work instead. Reports also described connectivity and compatibility improvements, including work relevant to newer Android versions at the time. These were observations, not a Google-guaranteed list of fixes.

Apps that are not available for use while driving may still appear greyed out in the launcher. Version 12.3 did not make those apps available for driving.

When 12.3 arrived—and where it fits now

The beta began appearing around June 27, 2024; stable distribution through Google Play began around June 30 to July 1. Contemporary reporting identified 12.3.6426 as the stable build. Google’s rollout was progressive, so availability could differ between users. Gizchina, Xatakandroid, Android Sage

As of September 2026, 12.3 is historical and has been superseded by later Android Auto development. Google’s separate 2026 announcements described later work including a refreshed interface, immersive 3D navigation, expanded Gemini capabilities, video while parked and richer in-car experiences. Those announcements are not features of version 12.3, and availability can vary by region, language, phone and vehicle. Google’s 2026 Android-in-cars update

How to update Android Auto through Google Play

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android phone.
  2. Tap your profile picture, then choose Manage apps & device.
  3. Open the available updates list and find Android Auto.
  4. Tap Update if an update is offered. You can also open the Android Auto Play Store listing.
  5. After installation, reconnect your phone to the car and check that Android Auto starts normally.

Google’s support guidance says compatible apps must be installed and signed in on the phone to use them through Android Auto. Some media apps may also require a subscription or premium account. Google Android Auto app guidance

If the update is missing

  • Search for Android Auto manually in Google Play and check its listing for an available update.
  • Make sure Google Play Store and Google Play services are functioning normally, then restart the phone and check again.
  • Wait and check later: staged distribution can delay when an update appears for an individual account or device.
  • Do not assume an APK download is required, and avoid uninstalling the app or clearing its data unless you are troubleshooting a specific problem.

Beta enrollment is not necessary for a stable update. Beta access may be full or unavailable, and test builds can introduce bugs or regressions. Sideloading is usually a poor shortcut: an APK from an unofficial source could be modified or mislabeled, may not match the phone’s Android version or architecture, and can complicate future updates. It also may not address a vehicle-specific issue.

Will Android Auto 12.3 fix connection problems?

It might have helped some users with stability or connection behavior, but a new app version is not a universal fix. Android Auto depends on the phone, cable or wireless connection, vehicle hardware and firmware, and the individual apps in use. Work through the likely cause before replacing equipment.

Spedal 2026 2-in-1 Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Adapter | Ultra Mini Dongle, Converts Wired to Wireless, WiFi 6 & Bluetooth 5.4, Plug & Play, Low Latency, Auto Reconnect
  • Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
  • Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
  • Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
  • Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.

If a wired connection fails

  • Try a known-good data-capable USB cable and another supported USB port, if the car has one. A charging-only or damaged cable can prevent projection.
  • If the connection drops or never starts, test whether the phone works with another compatible car or head unit. This can help distinguish a phone-side issue from a vehicle-side one.
  • Check whether the vehicle manufacturer offers relevant head-unit updates; Android Auto cannot remove hardware or firmware limitations in the car.

If a wireless connection fails

  • Check that the car supports wireless Android Auto; a vehicle that supports wired projection only will not gain wireless capability from an app update.
  • Remove and pair the phone with the car again if pairing appears to be the problem. Wireless use relies on compatible vehicle hardware and can be affected by Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection conditions.
  • Try wired Android Auto, if supported, to see whether the problem is specific to the wireless connection.

If Android Auto connects but one app does not work

  1. Update the individual app on the phone and confirm that you are signed in.
  2. Check that the app supports Android Auto and, where relevant, that your account includes any subscription the app requires.
  3. Try a different compatible navigation or media app. If only one app fails, the issue may be with that app rather than Android Auto.

What an app update cannot guarantee

Version 12.3 could not guarantee a remedy for a damaged USB port, wireless interference, an unsupported aftermarket head unit, vehicle firmware limitations, phone battery settings that restrict background activity, or a problem in an individual app. It also cannot add full-screen projection or wireless support when the vehicle does not offer those capabilities.

Android Auto 12.3 is not a 12.3-inch display

The numbers can look alike, but they refer to different things. Android Auto 12.3 is a version of the phone-side projection software. A 12.3-inch display is a measurement of a screen in a vehicle; it says nothing about the Android Auto version installed on a phone. Android Automotive OS is a separate operating system built into some vehicles, rather than Android Auto projected from a phone. Android Automotive OS documentation

For Android Auto, compatibility depends on the phone and its Android version, a supported car or head unit, and a suitable wired or wireless connection. The vehicle’s equipment and software also determine which projection features it exposes. Check Google’s Android Auto compatibility information and your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance for your specific car.
