Amazon Autos is live: How Amazon’s car-buying marketplace works

Amazon Autos brings vehicle search, pricing, financing, trade-ins and checkout online, but participating dealerships remain the sellers of record. Here's how the marketplace works, where it is available and what buyers still need to handle in person.

Amazon Autos is live, but it is not a direct-to-consumer car company. The marketplace lets shoppers search local inventory, review dealer-set pricing, obtain a trade-in valuation, apply for financing or pay in full, complete online paperwork where available and schedule dealership pickup. Participating dealers remain the sellers of record and handle the physical transaction.

The service therefore simplifies the digital and administrative parts of buying a car without eliminating local inventory, inspections, lender requirements or the dealership itself.

What Amazon Autos is—and what it is not

Amazon Autos is a vehicle-shopping and transaction marketplace, not a new form of direct-to-consumer car retail. Amazon provides the online storefront, search tools, checkout workflow and digital paperwork. A participating local dealership supplies the vehicle, remains the seller of record, manages the customer relationship and completes delivery or pickup.

That distinction explains both the appeal and the limits of the service. Amazon can move much of the research and administrative work into a familiar e-commerce interface, but it does not remove the dealership, the physical vehicle inspection, local inventory constraints or the regulated parts of a vehicle sale.

Amazon Autos launch timeline

Date What happened
November 16, 2023 Amazon and Hyundai announced a strategic partnership. The companies said Amazon would begin selling Hyundai vehicles online in the United States in 2024. The wider partnership also involved AWS cloud services and Alexa Built-in for future Hyundai vehicles.
December 2024 Amazon Autos went live with new Hyundai vehicles from participating dealerships in 48 U.S. cities. The limited launch reflected the fact that inventory came from local dealers rather than a national Amazon warehouse.
January 7, 2025 Hyundai described the program as a national launch through participating Hyundai dealers in 54 markets representing 71% of Hyundai sales volume at that time. Customers could search inventory, receive a trade-in valuation, arrange financing or pay in full, complete checkout and schedule pickup.
August 4, 2025 Amazon expanded Autos to used and certified-pre-owned vehicles, beginning in Los Angeles with additional cities planned. Amazon said its broader new-vehicle program then included participating dealers in more than 130 U.S. cities.

These city and market figures describe different stages and types of rollout. The initial 48-city launch, Hyundai’s 54-market description and the later reference to more than 130 cities are not interchangeable measures of nationwide availability.

How buying a car through Amazon Autos works

1. Search local inventory

A shopper begins by entering a location and filtering available vehicles by make, model, trim, color, features and local availability. The results come from participating dealers, so the selection depends on the shopper’s ZIP code, the dealer network in that area and what is currently in stock.

A listing can include vehicle details, pricing, dealership information, customer reviews and financing options. Because dealer inventory changes, a vehicle shown in a search may be updated or sold before the shopper finishes the process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Review the dealer’s price and vehicle details

Amazon’s stated goal is a more transparent, no-haggle experience. The Hyundai FAQ describes listings that may show MSRP and a seller finance price, with additional savings or pricing options potentially appearing during checkout. The important qualification is that the participating dealer still sets the price.

“No-haggle” therefore describes the intended online pricing model, not a promise that every listing will have the lowest possible out-the-door price. Before placing an order, compare the final price with the listing’s terms and ask the dealer to identify taxes, registration costs, documentation fees, accessories, lender charges and any other amounts that are not included in the displayed figure.

3. Request a trade-in valuation

Amazon Autos can let a shopper submit a vehicle for an instant trade-in valuation by answering questions about its condition and uploading images. Hyundai’s launch materials said the valuation was supplied by an independent third party.

An online estimate is not necessarily the final trade-in value. The dealership or appraisal provider may need to verify the vehicle’s condition, mileage, title, equipment and ownership documents before finalizing the offer. A large difference between the online estimate and the final inspection is a reason to pause and ask for an explanation rather than assuming the original number is guaranteed.

4. Choose financing or pay in full

The checkout process is designed to support financing as well as full payment. Financing availability, rates, incentives, lender requirements and loan terms can change by vehicle, buyer, market and date. Hyundai’s FAQ identified Hyundai Motor Finance as a financing source for certain terms in the program as described at that time; it should not be treated as a guarantee that every Amazon Autos listing uses that lender.

Compare the annual percentage rate, loan term, amount financed and total payments—not just the monthly payment. If a buyer already has a bank or credit-union preapproval, comparing that offer with the online financing option can make the cost easier to evaluate.

5. Complete online checkout and documents

Where supported, the buyer can complete the order online and electronically sign required documents. The exact amount of paperwork completed online will vary by vehicle, dealer, lender and jurisdiction. Identification, proof of insurance, title documents for a trade-in and additional lender or registration documents may still be required.

6. Pick up the vehicle at the dealership

The final step is generally scheduled pickup at the participating dealership. The dealer completes the sale and handles the vehicle’s delivery or pickup. Buyers should use the appointment to inspect the vehicle, confirm the VIN and included equipment, review the final paperwork and resolve any trade-in or financing discrepancy before leaving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon’s workflow can reduce the amount of time spent negotiating and filling out forms at the dealership, but it does not guarantee that every physical step disappears. A buyer may still want to arrange a test drive, confirm insurance and identification requirements, and ask how the dealer handles a final inspection or delivery issue.

What Amazon handles versus what the dealer handles

Amazon Autos generally provides The participating dealership remains responsible for
Vehicle search and comparison tools Actual vehicle inventory and condition
Online listing and checkout experience Being the seller of record
Digital financing and payment workflow Sale completion and lender coordination
Trade-in submission and valuation workflow Final trade-in inspection and acceptance
Electronic documents where available Customer relationship, delivery and pickup
Appointment scheduling Test drives and in-person vehicle handoff

This dealer-first design is central to Amazon Autos. It is more accurate to describe Amazon as adding a digital marketplace and transaction layer to dealership retail than as replacing the dealer.

New, used and certified-pre-owned vehicles

The initial program focused on new Hyundai vehicles. The August 2025 expansion added used and certified-pre-owned inventory, starting in Los Angeles and expanding to additional markets.

Amazon’s dealer-facing materials describe eligibility controls for used and CPO listings: vehicles must be no more than 10 years old and have 100,000 miles or fewer. The 2025 announcement also said those listings would include vehicle-history reports and must be available within a 75-mile sales radius of the customer. These are program requirements as described by Amazon and should be confirmed on the live listing, particularly as the marketplace expands.

  • Choose Your Perfect Fit for Most Cars, Trucks & SUVs - Simple Finger Check: place your fingers into the gap between your seat and center console. Slide in easily? Choose Standard (for gaps 0.5"-1.5"). Feel tight? Choose Narrow (for gaps ≦0.5")

Used and CPO shoppers could also coordinate test drives through participating dealerships. That is important because an online listing cannot reveal every mechanical, cosmetic or drivability issue.

Return and warranty protections for used and CPO vehicles

Amazon announced two notable protections for the used and CPO rollout:

  • Three-day/300-mile return policy.
  • Minimum 30-day/1,000-mile limited warranty.

These protections were stated for the used and CPO program described in Amazon’s 2025 announcement. They should not automatically be applied to new-vehicle listings or assumed to cover every future market. Check the specific listing terms, exclusions, mileage limits, return procedure and warranty administrator before completing the purchase.

A return window and limited warranty also are not substitutes for a careful inspection. Buyers should document the vehicle’s condition at pickup, retain all paperwork and report problems according to the applicable terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which brands and locations are covered?

Availability is determined by participating dealers, not simply by whether Amazon has created a national website. Amazon’s current dealer-facing materials identify Hyundai, Mazda, Kia and Subaru dealers nationwide as eligible to list new, used and CPO inventory, with leasing available where supported.

A separate industry report dated April 15, 2026 described expansion to Chevrolet and Jeep as well. That report should be treated as an indication of rollout rather than proof that every Chevrolet or Jeep vehicle is live in every market. The dealer FAQ’s named brands are the stronger primary reference, while the live search result for a shopper’s ZIP code is the most useful test of actual availability.

Even the phrase “nationwide” does not mean every ZIP code has the same selection. A shopper’s results may be affected by:

  • Whether a participating franchised dealer serves the area;
  • Which brands and vehicle types that dealer lists;
  • Whether the exact VIN is still available;
  • Local inventory and the applicable sales radius; and
  • Whether financing, leasing, trade-in and pickup features are enabled for that listing.

Enter the intended ZIP code and verify the actual vehicle listing instead of inferring availability from the national brand list or an old launch announcement.

Why Amazon Autos does not eliminate dealerships

Car sales are unusually difficult to centralize. A marketplace must account for local inventory, state and local regulations, financing, trade-ins, title and registration paperwork, physical inspections, test drives and vehicle delivery. Amazon’s model leaves those responsibilities with dealers that already have the required facilities, staff and local relationships.

Amazon’s dealer materials describe integrations with existing dealer-management systems so inventory, pricing and vehicle detail pages can be synchronized as vehicles are added, updated or sold. The materials also mention finance and inventory workflow integrations and ACV Auctions support for trade-in appraisals through the ClearCar portal. Those are dealer-side capabilities; they should not be interpreted as consumer services available on every listing.

Amazon is also focusing on franchised dealerships in major metropolitan areas and is not currently onboarding independent dealers, according to its dealer FAQ and registration materials. That makes the marketplace more selective than a platform open to every dealership.

What Amazon Autos genuinely simplifies

The service can reduce friction in the parts of car buying that are well suited to a website:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Searching several local listings from one interface;
  • Comparing vehicles using consistent filters;
  • Seeing dealer-set pricing before visiting a showroom;
  • Submitting trade-in information and images;
  • Applying for financing or selecting full payment;
  • Completing electronic forms where available; and
  • Scheduling a dealership pickup.

For a buyer who already knows the preferred model and is comfortable evaluating an online listing, these changes could shorten the administrative part of the purchase. The familiar Amazon interface may also make the process feel less fragmented than separately visiting dealer websites.

What it does not necessarily simplify

Amazon Autos does not remove the need to evaluate the vehicle or understand the final contract. The buyer may still need to:

  • Inspect or test-drive the vehicle;
  • Confirm that the VIN, trim, options, color and mileage match the listing;
  • Provide identification, proof of insurance and trade-in documentation;
  • Satisfy lender requirements;
  • Resolve a difference between an online and final trade-in valuation;
  • Review taxes, registration, documentation fees and other final charges; and
  • Collect the vehicle or coordinate delivery through the dealership.

Those are not failures of the marketplace so much as consequences of buying a physical, regulated product. The service moves more of the funnel online; it does not turn a vehicle into an ordinary parcel shipment.

A practical checklist before completing checkout

  1. Confirm the market and dealer. Verify that the listing is available for the correct ZIP code and identify the dealership that will sell and deliver the vehicle.
  2. Check the exact vehicle. Review the VIN, mileage, trim, options, color, condition and included equipment. For a used or CPO vehicle, read the history report and ask about any gaps or reported damage.
  3. Ask for the complete purchase price. Separate the advertised vehicle price from taxes, registration, documentation fees, accessories, lender charges and other amounts due at signing.
  4. Compare financing on total cost. Review APR, term, amount financed, total payments, incentives and any prepayment conditions. Do not choose based only on the monthly payment.
  5. Clarify the trade-in. Save the online valuation, disclose the vehicle’s condition accurately and ask whether the offer is subject to an in-person inspection.
  6. Verify protections. For used and CPO vehicles, read the applicable three-day/300-mile return terms and 30-day/1,000-mile limited-warranty terms. Do not assume they apply to a new vehicle.
  7. Arrange an inspection or test drive. Coordinate this with the dealer before pickup when possible. An online listing is not a substitute for examining the vehicle.
  8. Prepare for handoff. Ask what identification, insurance, payment, title and registration documents are required, and inspect the vehicle before accepting delivery.

How Amazon Autos fits Amazon’s broader strategy

Amazon Autos extends the company’s marketplace model into a category where digital convenience must be combined with local fulfillment. Amazon brings customer reach, search and checkout technology, transaction tools and integrations. Dealers bring licensed retail operations, physical inventory, financing execution, inspections, test drives and delivery.

That division of labor explains why Amazon Autos can be both easier than traditional car shopping and more geographically limited than ordinary Amazon purchases. Amazon cannot promise a single national inventory pool when each participating dealer controls its own vehicles and pricing.

Amazon’s automotive leadership has also described future work around loans, leasing, vehicle history, trade-ins and dealer inventory and pricing tools. That suggests Autos is intended as an expandable automotive platform rather than a one-time Hyundai storefront. Its eventual importance will depend on how many brands and dealers participate, how consistently listings reflect actual inventory and how much of the final transaction can be completed without an unnecessary in-person detour.

Is Amazon Autos a better way to buy a car?

It is most promising for shoppers who value online research, want to see dealer pricing before visiting a showroom and are comfortable completing financing and paperwork digitally. It may be less useful for shoppers who need a broad selection in a market without participating dealers, want to negotiate every part of a deal, or prefer to inspect several vehicles before choosing one.

The strongest description is not that Amazon is “selling cars directly.” It is that Amazon is moving more of the car-buying funnel into an e-commerce interface while leaving the regulated and physical transaction in the hands of local dealerships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Amazon sell the cars directly?

No. Amazon provides the online marketplace and transaction tools, but a participating local dealership remains the seller of record. The dealer controls the inventory and pricing, completes the sale and handles pickup or delivery.

Is Amazon Autos available everywhere in the United States?

Availability depends on the shopper’s ZIP code, participating dealers, local inventory and the specific vehicle. Amazon’s dealer materials identify Hyundai, Mazda, Kia and Subaru dealers nationwide as eligible to list inventory, but that does not mean every brand or model is available in every market.

Can I return a car bought through Amazon Autos?

The announced three-day/300-mile return policy and minimum 30-day/1,000-mile limited warranty were described for used and certified-pre-owned vehicles in Amazon’s 2025 expansion. They should not automatically be assumed to apply to new vehicles or every future listing. Read the terms attached to the specific vehicle.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Amazon Autos guarantee financing or a particular interest rate?

Amazon Autos supports financing and full payment where available, but rates, lenders, incentives and requirements vary by listing, buyer and market. Compare the APR and total cost with outside financing rather than relying only on the monthly payment.

Is an Amazon Autos trade-in valuation final?

The online trade-in estimate is based on information supplied by the shopper, including condition answers and vehicle images. It may be subject to verification or an in-person inspection before the dealership accepts the vehicle and finalizes the value.

The Bottom Line

Amazon Autos simplifies discovery, pricing, financing, trade-ins and paperwork—but the dealership still owns the inventory, sells the vehicle and handles pickup or delivery. Check the live listing for ZIP-code availability, brand coverage, final charges and the exact return or warranty terms before ordering.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
