All-terrain Exoquad gets wheelchair users into four-wheelin’ action

The Exoquad V2 brings four-wheel-drive electric power, 25 cm of ground clearance and adaptive controls to off-road mobility—but it is not currently street legal.

The Exoquad is an electric off-road mobility vehicle designed to take people with reduced mobility beyond the limits of ordinary pavement-oriented mobility equipment. Built by Norwegian company Exotek, it uses four-wheel-drive hardware, independent suspension and a low-speed, high-torque setup to tackle trails, grass, gravel and uneven ground.

It is not a conventional wheelchair, and it is not currently street legal. The current version is the Exoquad V2, available with either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Exotek positions it as a way for users to transfer into a dedicated seat and access outdoor terrain that can be difficult or impossible with a standard wheelchair.

What is the Exoquad?

The Exoquad is a purpose-built electric quad-style vehicle for outdoor mobility. Exotek was founded by Mattias Storvestre and Sigurd Groven. Groven became paralyzed from the chest down after a mountain-bike accident, while Storvestre was looking for a practical outdoor mobility solution for his partner, who has a spinal-cord injury.

That background explains the vehicle’s unusual design brief. The Exoquad is not trying to be a faster version of a mobility scooter. Its priorities are traction, stability, ground clearance and control on uneven terrain. Riders transfer into its adjustable seat, operate a thumb throttle and use configurable brake and throttle controls.

Exotek’s controls can be arranged for left- or right-hand use, and the company says its CNC-machined controls are intended to accommodate people with limited grip or tetraplegia. There is an important limitation, however: steering is not servo-assisted. A rider still needs enough strength to steer the vehicle.

Exoquad V2 specifications

These are Exotek’s current published figures for the V2, rather than independent test results.

Specification Exotek’s published figure
Drive configurations 2WD or 4WD
Total output 6,000 W
Torque 350 Nm
Motor layout Two rear chain-driven mid-motors and two front hub motors
Battery 2,400 Wh, 48-volt lithium system
Claimed range Approximately 50 km per charge
Top speed Approximately 15 km/h
4WD curb weight Approximately 98 kg
2WD curb weight Approximately 85 kg
Rider capacity 130 kg
Suspension travel 200 mm independent suspension
Ground clearance 25 cm

Exotek’s website contains a battery inconsistency: the main V2 specification lists 2,400 Wh, while the FAQ says 2,300 Wh. The 50-km range is also a manufacturer claim; the company says customers have recorded more than 50 km using GPS, but that does not establish a standardized test-cycle result. Real range will depend on rider weight, terrain, temperature, tire pressure, drive mode and how much climbing the vehicle does.

Why the four-wheel-drive version matters

The Exoquad’s four-wheel-drive layout is less about speed than maintaining traction at low speed. The rear motors drive through chains, while the front wheels use hub motors. That combination gives the vehicle power at both axles without turning it into a conventional road-going quad bike.

Exotek lists a capability of more than 50 degrees uphill and more than 30 degrees sideways. Those figures should be treated as manufacturer specifications, not as guarantees for every trail or rider. Surface grip, loose soil, wet leaves, tire condition and the rider’s ability to control the vehicle all matter. A steep slope that is technically within the published limit can still be unsafe.

The approximately 15-km/h top speed is deliberate. Exotek says the Exoquad is tuned for torque and safety rather than high speed. In practical terms, it is closer to a slow electric off-road platform than to a recreational ATV.

Access and everyday usability

The V2 has expanded seating, adjustable seating position and adaptive control options. Those features may make transferring into the vehicle easier, but buyers should verify the transfer height, seat dimensions, restraint arrangement and control layout in person. A vehicle intended for one user’s mobility needs may not suit another user’s balance, reach or upper-body strength.

The Exoquad also does not replace a user’s regular wheelchair in every situation. The available documentation describes transferring into the Exoquad seat; it does not establish that the vehicle carries a wheelchair onboard. Anyone who needs a wheelchair at the destination will need a separate transport plan.

Transport is another point that is easy to overlook. The user manual explicitly says the Exoquad is not a car seat. A person must not remain seated in it while it is being transported in a car, trailer or similar vehicle. The Exoquad itself must be secured separately with an approved transport solution.

Charging, weather and maintenance limitations

The battery can be charged in the vehicle or removed for charging. Charging is limited to temperatures between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius. The manual says not to drive while the charger is connected and not to leave the battery charging unattended.

Weather resistance does not mean the vehicle is intended to function as an amphibious machine. Exotek advises avoiding severe cold, heavy rain and deep snow. Earlier product information also warns against crossing rivers or deep streams. Water crossings can create both traction and electrical risks, even when individual components are described as weather resistant.

Before riding, the manual calls for checks involving the brakes, wheel fasteners, cockpit, tires and bolts. Tire pressure and shock pressure are particularly important because incorrect settings can reduce stability and maneuverability. This is an off-road machine with suspension and multiple driven wheels, not a fit-and-forget mobility appliance.

Price, delivery and legal status

Exotek currently asks prospective buyers to request a quote rather than publishing a current retail price. New Atlas reported historical 2024 prices of €12,999 for the 2WD model and €15,999 for the 4WD model, but those figures should not be treated as current pricing.

The manufacturer’s FAQ gives an approximate lead time of three months from order to delivery, subject to order volume. Prospective buyers should confirm the final specification, battery capacity, shipping arrangements, service support and import costs before placing an order.

The Exoquad is not currently street legal, according to Exotek. The company says it is working toward classification as an electric wheelchair for pavement use. That process does not make the vehicle legal everywhere: road, sidewalk and mobility-device rules vary by country and sometimes by local authority. Buyers should check their jurisdiction before planning to use it away from private land or approved trails.

Exoquad versus the earlier model

The original Exoquad featured in a New Atlas report published on April 9, 2024, alongside Exotek’s unpowered downhill-oriented Exogravity. The current V2 should not be confused with every specification in that earlier coverage. Exotek now lists a refined aluminum chassis, expanded seating, adaptive controls and a next-generation 48-volt battery system.

In particular, the older report’s approximately 90-kg 4WD weight and 2.1-kWh battery description are not the current V2 figures. Exotek’s current FAQ lists approximately 98 kg for the 4WD model, 85 kg for the 2WD model and 50 kg for the Exogravity.

Who is the Exoquad for?

The Exoquad makes the most sense for a user who can safely transfer into its seat, operate the controls and steer without power assistance, and has access to private property or trails where the vehicle may legally be used. It could open up gravel roads, forest tracks, fields and other terrain that standard wheelchairs cannot comfortably negotiate.

It is a less obvious fit for someone who needs a road-legal vehicle, cannot perform a transfer, requires fully assisted steering, or has no practical way to transport a 98-kg machine. A hands-on demonstration and an assessment by a qualified mobility specialist are more useful than relying on the headline torque or hill-angle figures.

FAQ

Is the Exoquad a wheelchair?

No. Exotek describes it as a mobility vehicle and specifically says it is not a wheelchair. The rider transfers into the Exoquad’s own seat, and the available documentation does not confirm that it carries a regular wheelchair.

How fast can the Exoquad V2 go?

Exotek’s FAQ lists an approximate top speed of 15 km/h. The vehicle is designed around low-speed torque and off-road control rather than high-speed travel.

Is the Exoquad street legal?

Not currently, according to Exotek. The company is working toward classification as an electric wheelchair for pavement use, but legality depends on the country and local rules.

How much does the Exoquad V2 cost?

Exotek currently uses a “Request a quote” process and does not publish a current retail price on its product page. Historical 2024 prices reported for the earlier offering were €12,999 for 2WD and €15,999 for 4WD, but those should not be assumed to remain current.

The Bottom Line

The Exoquad V2 is a serious off-road mobility platform, not a conventional wheelchair or a road-legal ATV. Its 6,000-W claimed output, 25-cm ground clearance, independent suspension and available four-wheel drive give it the hardware to reach rougher terrain, while adaptive controls address some—though not all—accessibility needs. The trade-offs are substantial: a roughly 98-kg 4WD vehicle, separate transport requirements, careful charging and maintenance procedures, no current street-legal status and a price available only by quote.

For the right rider and the right private trail environment, it could provide a level of outdoor access that ordinary mobility equipment cannot. It should be evaluated as a specialized vehicle, with an in-person fit and control assessment before purchase.
