A full measurement can include camber, toe and caster, and the correct specifications and setup depend on the vehicle. If you need all angles checked or have persistent handling or tire-wear problems, use a qualified alignment technician.
What wheel alignment measures—and what it can affect
Wheel alignment describes the angles of the wheels relative to the vehicle and road. Professional systems measure camber, toe and caster; each vehicle has its own specifications. Hunter Engineering Company, an alignment-equipment manufacturer, notes that misalignment may show up as “irregular tire wear, handling problems or a crooked steering wheel.” NHTSA’s TireWise guidance says alignment helps maximize tire life and prevent a vehicle from veering on a straight, level road. What a home alignment check can establish
Toe plates can support a limited toe check, generally at the front wheels, when used according to their operating instructions. They do not measure every angle needed to verify a complete alignment. A toe reading alone cannot establish whether camber or caster is within specification, or confirm every wheel’s alignment.
Home methods such as strings or camber gauges may address different measurements and require different setup. The available sources do not establish a reliable accuracy ranking among these approaches. When comparing tools, consider what angles they measure, whether you can apply the vehicle’s specifications, how level and carefully positioned the vehicle must be, whether it must be lifted or repositioned, and what the final readings actually verify. Do not assume that a simple home method reproduces a shop alignment.

Prepare with the vehicle’s own specifications
Do not use generic toe, camber or caster numbers as a setting for every car. Manufacturer procedures differ, and some angles may not be adjustable on a particular application. Find the service information for your exact vehicle and follow the procedure and tolerances it specifies.
Why setup changes the result
Tesla’s 2025 Model Y procedure illustrates how much preparation can matter: it calls for checking tire pressures against the door-jamb values, confirming alignment-equipment specifications against the service manual, checking ride height, centering and holding the steering wheel, and reviewing final measurements. It also uses professional rack equipment and vehicle-specific procedures; it is an example for that Model Y, not a general home-alignment recipe. Tesla Model Y service procedure.

Mitsubishi’s 2019 procedure likewise requires a level surface and suspension, steering, wheels and tires in normal condition before measurement. For the application covered, it gives specific angle values and says camber and caster are factory pre-adjusted and not adjustable. Use toe plates within their safety limits
Read the complete instructions for your specific tool before starting. The cited toe-plate manual directs users to turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, block the rear tires and consult vehicle-specific tolerances. It also says not to work underneath a vehicle without additional safe support, such as jack stands, and explicitly states that the plates are not designed for use with jack stands. When to get a qualified alignment
Choose professional service when you need a complete multi-angle measurement, cannot obtain the correct specifications, or cannot safely and reliably set up the vehicle and tool. It is also prudent to seek inspection if uneven wear or handling problems persist, or if adjustment hardware appears damaged or seized; those symptoms can point to problems beyond alignment.
