There is no single “best” motorcycle engine: a practical 50 cc commuter engine, an enduring road-bike layout and a works racer’s experimental V5 solve very different problems. These eight examples show several ways an engine can matter: establish a lasting design, make useful performance accessible, set a production milestone or achieve a notable competition result. They are selected examples, not an objective ranking or a complete list of thirteen.
Which motorcycle engines changed what came after?
The comparisons below keep production motorcycles separate from prototypes and race machines. Figures belong to the specific model or event named; power and speed numbers from different eras are not directly comparable measures of which engine was “best.” Where a source does not state a specification, it is identified as such rather than inferred from a model name.

What makes an engine influential?
A layout that lasts
The BMW R 32 illustrates one kind of influence: a manufacturer’s engine arrangement and drivetrain can become a durable part of its identity. That is different from claiming that one design is universally superior. A boxer, inline-four and V4 package cylinders differently and suit different engineering goals.
Practical performance, not just unusual engineering
The Super Cub example shifts attention from spectacle to utility. Honda’s account of the engine designer Jozaburo Kimura’s recollection explains the challenge in period terms: “The requirements of this 4-horsepower engine were simply unheard of. The 50cc 2-stroke Cub F auxiliary engine that we’d been producing till then only put out 1 horsepower. It followed that we’d have to boost power output by 4 times all in one go. And this was at a time when only 10 percent of Japan’s roads were even paved!” The recollection, published by Honda in 2009, helps explain why the engine’s everyday purpose matters to its story.

Production influence is not the same as racing innovation
The CB750 FOUR and VF750 models are important here as production milestones described by Honda. The NR500 and RC211V belong to racing development: their layouts were created for competition, and an achievement on track does not establish that a design was suitable or successful as a mass-market road engine. The NR500 is especially instructive because Honda’s later assessment favored a conventional V4 for production development.
A record machine is not a road-bike template
The Curtiss V-8’s speed run is a competition milestone, not evidence that its direct-drive arrangement was a practical production solution. Prototype status and intended use matter as much as a headline figure when comparing engines.

Why this is not a definitive top thirteen
“Influential” is an editorial judgment, not a measurable ranking. The examples here are supported by museum and manufacturer histories, but those sources do not establish a balanced, independent ranking of thirteen engines. A Science Museum Group catalogue entry also documents a Villiers two-stroke motorcycle engine with flywheel and magneto, dated circa 1919. That record confirms an early artifact and its maker; by itself, it does not show production scale, market impact or priority over other designs. Treating it—or another engine—as a major influence would require evidence beyond the artifact’s existence.
For any “best engine” comparison, first choose the criterion: lasting layout, practical transport, a production breakthrough or a racing record. Those are different achievements, and no single power figure can settle the question across engines built for different uses and eras.
