The most important automotive technologies at CES 2025 were not six versions of the same idea. They fell into three distinct groups: software-defined vehicle interfaces, specialized autonomous transportation, and more experimental forms of mobility. BMW showed a near-production windshield information system, Sony Honda Mobility opened reservations for the technology-focused AFEELA 1 in California, and Aurora, Continental, and NVIDIA outlined a path toward mass-produced autonomous-truck hardware. Other exhibits, including Hyundai Mobis’s holographic windshield display and XPENG AEROHT’s road-and-aircraft concept, remain further from ordinary showroom use.
That distinction matters. CES demonstrations, reservation announcements, pilot plans, and manufacturing targets are evidence of intent—not proof that a technology is safe, affordable, approved, or ready for widespread deployment.

1. BMW Panoramic iDrive and Panoramic Vision
What BMW showed
BMW used CES 2025 to present a close-to-production version of its next-generation iDrive system. The centerpiece, called Panoramic Vision, projects vehicle information across the lower portion of the windshield. BMW showed information such as speed, navigation, range, and other driving-related data appearing in the driver’s forward field of view rather than only on a conventional instrument cluster or a central touchscreen.
The system is part of BMW Operating System X, which BMW describes as the software foundation for personalization and broader digital functions. This pairing is significant: Panoramic Vision is not simply a larger screen, and Operating System X is not merely an entertainment interface. Together, they represent BMW’s attempt to make the vehicle’s display layout, software, and user experience one integrated layer.
Why it could shape future vehicles
Most modern vehicles divide information among several physical areas: a cluster behind the steering wheel, a head-up display, a center screen, warning lights, and controls in the cabin. BMW’s approach moves more of that information into the driver’s forward view and allows the software to determine how it is organized.
Recommended Free Tools
That could accelerate the shift away from fixed, isolated dashboard screens. A software-defined interface can potentially change as vehicle functions, navigation services, driver preferences, and assistance systems evolve. It also gives automakers more control over how information is prioritized according to the driving context.
However, a forward-field display is not automatically safer. More visible information can reduce the need to look down, but it can also create visual clutter or compete with the road scene. BMW’s demonstration and deployment plan do not by themselves establish a safety outcome. Independent testing, regulatory assessment, and experience with production vehicles will be needed to determine whether the interface improves attention and comprehension in real driving.
What needs to happen next
BMW said the technology package would enter new BMW models beginning with the Neue Klasse program and would be introduced across new models from the end of 2025. That is a manufacturer roadmap, not confirmation that every function shown at CES would appear in every market or trim.
The next tests are practical ones: whether drivers can read the information quickly, whether the projection remains legible in different lighting conditions, how content is limited while the vehicle is moving, and how the system behaves when sensors, navigation data, or software services are unavailable.

What Hyundai Mobis demonstrated
Hyundai Mobis unveiled a holographic windshield display at CES 2025. The supplier designed the system to place information such as navigation and driving-related content in the driver’s forward field of view while preserving the ability to see through the windshield.
Hyundai Mobis presented the display as part of its human-centered technology portfolio. The important distinction is that it was shown as future in-vehicle display technology, not as a widely available consumer feature or a confirmed feature of a specific mass-market vehicle.
Why a supplier-developed display matters
The display illustrates how suppliers—not only vehicle brands—are developing the components that could define the next generation of vehicle interiors. If a transparent or holographic display can be manufactured reliably, it could change the physical architecture of the cockpit by reducing dependence on separate instrument panels and conventional screens.
It also represents a different technical direction from BMW’s Panoramic Vision. BMW’s CES presentation focused on a planned vehicle interface and its software environment. Hyundai Mobis showed a supplier technology that could potentially be adapted by multiple automakers. The two ideas point toward the same broader trend: information is moving closer to the driver’s view, and the windshield is becoming a possible interface surface.
What needs to happen next
A CES demonstration does not establish the final display brightness, resolution, viewing angles, manufacturing method, cost, or compatibility with different windshield designs. It also does not establish regulatory approval or independent human-factors results.
Before this type of system becomes common, automakers and regulators would need confidence that it does not obstruct the road view, produce distracting reflections, create confusing depth cues, or become unreadable in glare, darkness, rain, or snow. Long-term reliability and repairability would matter as well: a display integrated into the windshield could be considerably more complex to replace than a conventional dashboard component.
3. Sony Honda Mobility AFEELA 1
What was announced
Sony Honda Mobility used CES 2025 to announce that it had begun accepting online reservations in California for the AFEELA 1 electric vehicle. The company positions AFEELA as a mobility technology product that combines Honda’s vehicle-development and manufacturing capabilities with Sony’s software, entertainment, sensing, and user-experience technologies.

The CES announcement emphasized a technology-oriented user experience and the intention to build a new mobility business around the AFEELA brand. That makes AFEELA important even beyond the individual vehicle. It is an attempt to combine traditional automotive hardware with the kinds of digital services, connected software, sensing, and entertainment systems more commonly associated with consumer electronics.

Why the partnership model could matter
For decades, automakers largely differentiated vehicles through engines, chassis tuning, design, manufacturing, and dealer networks. Connected electric vehicles add another competitive layer: computing architecture, software updates, digital services, sensing, interfaces, and the ability to improve the product after delivery.
AFEELA represents one of the clearest CES 2025 examples of a traditional automaker and a major consumer-technology company attempting to build around that combined proposition. If the model succeeds, future vehicle programs may increasingly be organized around partnerships between automakers, technology companies, cloud providers, chip designers, and specialized software developers.
That does not mean the car becomes a smartphone on wheels. Vehicles still have to meet demanding requirements for crash safety, durability, thermal management, cybersecurity, privacy, serviceability, and regulatory compliance. The partnership model must work across all of those areas, not only in the demonstration of a polished digital interface.
What needs to happen next
Reservations are not deliveries. The announcement does not, by itself, prove final pricing, production timing, feature availability, or commercial success. Nor does it guarantee that every CES-demonstrated function will be present in the final production vehicle.
The meaningful milestones will be a finalized production specification, regulatory and safety compliance, manufacturing, customer deliveries, software support after delivery, and evidence that the digital features provide lasting value rather than novelty. Because the reservation announcement cited California, it should not be read as a statement of availability in every U.S. state or in other countries.
4. Aurora, Continental, and NVIDIA’s autonomous-trucking system
What the companies planned
At CES 2025, Aurora, Continental, and NVIDIA announced a partnership intended to deploy driverless trucks at scale. NVIDIA’s DRIVE Thor computing platform and DriveOS were to be integrated into the Aurora Driver, which Aurora describes as an SAE Level 4 autonomous-driving system.
Continental planned to mass-manufacture the autonomous-driving hardware in 2027 and ship complete hardware kits to Aurora’s truck-manufacturing partners. The announcement therefore described more than an AI software demonstration. It outlined a multi-company system involving vehicle-grade computing, sensors, autonomy software, hardware manufacturing, truck integration, and commercial deployment.
Why freight may be an early autonomy market
Autonomous freight has a different operating problem from an autonomous personal car. Long-haul trucks often travel repeatable highway routes, spend many hours in operation, and face major labor and utilization pressures. Those characteristics may make certain freight corridors easier to define, monitor, and validate than the full range of streets encountered by a privately owned passenger vehicle.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe partnership also shows why autonomous driving is becoming a systems-integration challenge rather than simply an AI-model challenge. A commercial truck must have the necessary sensors, compute, software, communications, power management, fallback behavior, maintenance procedures, mapping, remote support, and truck-platform integration. Every part has to work over long distances and under demanding operating conditions.
What SAE Level 4 does—and does not—mean
SAE Level 4 describes an automated-driving system intended to perform the driving task within a defined operational design domain. It does not mean that a truck can operate autonomously on every road, in all weather, or in every traffic situation.
The operational domain could limit where the truck travels, the road types it uses, its speed, weather conditions, or other factors. A Level 4 truck program must therefore be judged by the conditions it is designed to handle, not by the label alone.
What needs to happen next
Continental’s 2027 manufacturing target is a roadmap, not proof that widespread driverless trucking had already occurred by CES 2025. Before scale deployment, the companies will need to validate the complete system on relevant routes, demonstrate how it handles unusual events and system failures, integrate it with truck manufacturers, satisfy applicable regulators, and establish inspection, repair, and operational-support processes.

5. HOLON’s urban autonomous electric shuttle
What HOLON presented
HOLON presented its fully electric autonomous minibus again at CES 2025, this time at Mobileye’s booth. HOLON says the vehicle uses Mobileye Drive, a full-stack autonomous-driving system incorporating EyeQ systems-on-chip, sensing, mapping, and driving-policy technologies.
HOLON said the vehicle was intended for pilot projects in Germany during 2025. Its proposed role is different from that of a privately owned autonomous car. An electric shuttle could operate on scheduled or on-demand services for campuses, airports, business districts, transit connections, and other defined routes.
Why shuttles may be easier to deploy incrementally
A shuttle service can be designed around a particular route, fleet, operating schedule, stop pattern, and support system. That narrower scope may make it possible to introduce autonomous mobility incrementally instead of solving every road and traffic scenario at once.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →It also changes the business question. A successful shuttle does not necessarily need to replace every private vehicle. It needs to provide reliable, safe, and affordable service for a particular transportation gap—such as a connection between a parking area and a terminal, or a first- and last-mile link to public transit.
At the same time, a constrained route does not eliminate complexity. Urban environments include pedestrians, cyclists, roadworks, emergency vehicles, poor weather, unexpected stopping, and interactions with conventional traffic. A shuttle also has to provide accessible boarding, manage passenger behavior, and fit into a real transit or commercial operation.
What needs to happen next
The planned German pilots were a next step, not evidence of broad deployment or proven economics. A credible pilot would need to show how the vehicle performs over repeated service, how often a human operator or remote support is needed, how incidents are handled, and whether riders and transportation authorities accept the service.
The longer-term question is whether autonomous shuttles can deliver a dependable service at a cost that makes sense compared with conventional buses, taxis, or other transit options. Their strongest opportunity may be in defined environments where route design and fleet management can be controlled.

6. XPENG AEROHT’s Land Aircraft Carrier
What the concept combines
XPENG AEROHT presented its modular Land Aircraft Carrier at CES 2025. The concept combines a road-going carrier vehicle with a detachable electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft. The intended experience is a transition between ground travel and personal low-altitude flight: the road vehicle transports the aircraft, which can then be separated for aerial operation.
This is a more radical interpretation of the automobile than the other five entries. Instead of making a car more connected or more autonomous, XPENG AEROHT is treating the vehicle as a platform for another mode of transportation.
Why it could influence future mobility discussions
The Land Aircraft Carrier may never become a mainstream consumer vehicle, but it expands the conversation around what a mobility product can be. Similar concepts could influence thinking about multimodal regional travel, emergency response, remote-area access, specialized logistics, and low-altitude transportation.
Its modular design also addresses one practical problem in personal aviation: an aircraft cannot conveniently cover every part of a journey, while a road vehicle cannot avoid congestion or difficult terrain in the same way. Combining the two could offer flexibility—at least in theory.
Why it is the most speculative entry
The Land Aircraft Carrier faces challenges that ordinary cars do not. It would need an appropriate aircraft certification pathway, compliant airspace operations, reliable flight-control and safety systems, trained operators, maintenance facilities, charging or energy infrastructure, insurance, and public acceptance. Cost and storage would also be significant concerns.
It should not be described as a generally available flying car. The CES presentation was an ambitious development and commercialization proposition, not evidence that ordinary drivers can currently use the vehicle as routine transportation.

1. The vehicle is becoming software-defined
BMW Operating System X, AFEELA’s technology-platform positioning, and the Aurora–Continental–NVIDIA autonomy stack all point in the same direction. A vehicle’s capabilities increasingly depend on software, computing hardware, sensors, updates, and connected services in addition to its mechanical components.

(Note: SD card not included, must be purchased separately).
This changes how vehicles may be designed and sold. A car’s user experience can evolve after purchase, but owners may also become more dependent on software support, connectivity, cybersecurity, and the continued operation of cloud-based services. Automakers will need to balance frequent improvements with stability, privacy, safety, and long-term service obligations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Displays are moving into the driver’s field of view
BMW’s Panoramic Vision and Hyundai Mobis’s holographic windshield display use different approaches, but both reduce the separation between the road view and vehicle information. The windshield is becoming a potential interface surface rather than only a transparent barrier between occupants and the outside world.
The design challenge is not simply to display more information. It is to determine which information deserves the driver’s attention, when it should appear, how it should be presented, and when it should disappear. A larger or more immersive interface can be useful only if it remains understandable and does not add distraction.
3. Autonomy is fragmenting into specialized use cases
The Aurora program targets autonomous freight, while HOLON targets defined shuttle operations. These applications have different vehicles, routes, passengers, economics, operating domains, and support requirements.
That specialization is more realistic than assuming a single autonomous-driving product will solve every transportation scenario at once. Long-haul freight may favor repeatable highway corridors. Shuttles may favor campuses, airports, or planned urban routes. Privately owned autonomous cars face a much broader range of roads, weather, behavior, and ownership conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. The supplier ecosystem is becoming as important as the vehicle brand
Hyundai Mobis’s windshield technology, Mobileye Drive in the HOLON shuttle, NVIDIA computing hardware, and Continental’s planned autonomous-driving kits show how future vehicles will be assembled from increasingly specialized technology stacks.
The automaker remains responsible for integrating and supporting the finished vehicle, but the underlying capabilities may come from several companies. That can accelerate development, while also creating difficult questions about responsibility when a software, sensor, compute, or mapping component fails.
How to judge CES automotive claims
The six exhibits should not be placed on a simple available-versus-unavailable scale. A more useful framework is to examine the evidence behind each claim:
- Demonstration: The technology worked in a show environment or was presented as a prototype. This establishes that the concept can be shown, not that it is ready for production.
- Roadmap: The company has named a target vehicle, production window, or manufacturing milestone. A roadmap indicates intent but can change.
- Reservation: Customers can express interest or reserve a product. Reservations are a stronger commercial signal than a display, but they are not deliveries or proof of demand at scale.
- Pilot: A limited operational trial is planned or underway. A pilot can reveal real-world issues, but it does not prove that a service works economically across many locations.
- Commercial deployment: The product is approved, manufactured, supported, and operating for customers at meaningful scale. None of the CES announcements covered here should automatically be treated as evidence of this final stage.
Using that framework, BMW had one of the clearest near-term vehicle roadmaps. AFEELA had a reservation-stage commercial signal in California. HOLON and the autonomous-trucking partnership had pilot or manufacturing road maps. Hyundai Mobis’s display was a supplier technology demonstration, and XPENG AEROHT’s aircraft-carrying vehicle remained the most speculative concept.
That is a ranking of deployment evidence, not a ranking of technical ambition or eventual importance. A supplier prototype can become more influential than a planned production feature, and a reservation program can still fail to reach customers.
What would need to happen next?
For these innovations to move beyond CES, each must clear a different set of hurdles:
- Displays: Validate visibility, distraction, glare performance, durability, repairability, and regulatory compliance in real vehicles and varied lighting conditions.
- Software-defined vehicles: Establish dependable update systems, cybersecurity, privacy protections, service support, and clear limits on which features require connectivity.
- Autonomous trucks: Validate the full vehicle-and-software system within a defined operating domain, integrate it with truck manufacturers, and demonstrate safe responses to failures and unusual road events.
- Autonomous shuttles: Complete pilots, obtain local approvals, provide accessible and reliable passenger service, and show that fleet operation is economically viable.
- Personal flight concepts: Resolve aircraft certification, airspace access, operator training, maintenance, charging, insurance, emergency procedures, cost, and public acceptance.
- All six: Convert a compelling demonstration into a product that can be manufactured, maintained, insured, regulated, and supported after the initial launch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these CES 2025 automotive technologies available to buy now?
No—not in the broad sense. BMW presented Panoramic iDrive as a technology intended for new models beginning with the Neue Klasse program and across new models from the end of 2025. Sony Honda Mobility announced online AFEELA 1 reservations in California, but reservations are not deliveries. The other systems were demonstrations, planned pilots, manufacturing road maps, or development concepts.
What does SAE Level 4 mean for the autonomous trucks shown at CES 2025?
SAE Level 4 refers to autonomous operation within a defined operational design domain. It does not mean the trucks can drive everywhere, in every weather condition, or on every type of road without restrictions.

BMW’s Panoramic iDrive had one of the clearest near-term deployment plans because BMW tied it to the Neue Klasse program and said it would spread to new models from the end of 2025. AFEELA also had a commercial signal through California reservations, but reservations did not confirm final production timing or deliveries.
Is XPENG AEROHT’s Land Aircraft Carrier a flying car people can use today?
No. It remains an ambitious development and commercialization concept. Certification, airspace rules, pilot training, safety systems, maintenance, infrastructure, cost, and public acceptance would all have to be addressed before routine consumer use.
The Bottom Line
CES 2025’s most credible automotive story was not that flying cars or universal self-driving vehicles had arrived. It was that transportation is splitting into more specialized technology paths: software-defined vehicle interfaces, forward-view displays, autonomous freight corridors, managed shuttle services, and experimental ground-air platforms. BMW and AFEELA offered the clearest near-term product signals; Aurora, Continental, NVIDIA, and HOLON showed how autonomy may advance through constrained commercial applications; and Hyundai Mobis and XPENG AEROHT illustrated how far the longer-term possibilities could extend. The decisive evidence will come after the show floor—in production vehicles, validated pilots, regulatory approvals, and dependable service.
