At an illustrative $3.50 per gallon, that is roughly $4,025 in modeled fuel-cost savings—not a guarantee of what any owner will spend.
What the five-year fuel calculation shows
Toyota says the 2026 Land Cruiser’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is EPA-estimated at 23 mpg combined. Car and Driver lists the 2026 Lexus GX at 17 mpg combined. The Land Cruiser’s cited rating is therefore 6 mpg higher in this comparison. Toyota USA Newsroom; Car and Driver.
For 75,000 miles over five years, dividing distance by each combined rating gives approximately 3,261 gallons for the Land Cruiser and 4,412 gallons for the GX. The difference is about 1,150 gallons. Multiplying that estimated difference by an illustrative gasoline price of $3.50 per gallon produces about $4,025 in fuel-cost savings; using unrounded gallons gives about $4,023.
Assumptions behind the estimate
- Distance: 15,000 miles per year, or 75,000 miles total across five years.
- Fuel price: $3.50 per gallon, used only as an illustrative assumption—not a current-price claim or forecast.
- Fuel economy: The 23-mpg and 17-mpg combined ratings are held constant throughout the period.
- Scope: This is a fuel-only calculation. It excludes fuel-price changes, discounting, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, taxes, purchase-price differences, financing and resale value.
To estimate the fuel-cost gap at a different gasoline price, multiply about 1,150 gallons by that price. To adapt the gallons estimate to a different annual mileage, scale it in proportion to miles driven.

Why actual fuel use can differ
Combined ratings provide a standardized mixed-driving comparison, not a prediction for every owner. City and highway mix, towing, vehicle load, terrain, speed, weather, tire condition and driving style can all change consumption. The Land Cruiser hybrid still uses gasoline; its rating does not mean it eliminates fuel purchases.
EPA explains that fuel-economy label data draws on EPA laboratory tests and manufacturer-submitted information, and that automakers must update label values when information indicates a value is too high. Model-specific estimates can be revised, so check the current window sticker for the exact vehicle and trim. U.S. EPA: How are vehicles tested?

Fuel savings do not decide which SUV is the better value
The estimate compares fuel use only. It does not establish which SUV costs less to own overall or suits a particular buyer better. A broader comparison would need to weigh purchase price, seating and cargo needs, towing, off-road equipment and intended use, fuel grade and other operating costs, insurance, maintenance and resale value. The cited MPG figures alone cannot settle those questions.
