The Toyota Corolla is the safest default choice if your main goal is predictable, inexpensive ownership. The Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, and Mazda3 are also strong used-car candidates, each serving a different priority: fuel economy, space, driving enjoyment, or all-around practicality.

No used car is maintenance-free. The best way to interpret dirt cheap maintenance is lower-than-average expected spending on scheduled service, wear items, and repairs—not merely inexpensive oil changes. In the United States, labor rates, parts prices, rust exposure, insurance, and used-car prices vary by region, so the condition and service history of the individual vehicle matter more than a model’s badge or advertised price.

The five best low-maintenance used cars at a glance

These recommendations combine repair-cost averages, long-running powertrains, parts availability, independent-shop familiarity, model-year screening, and the problems most likely to turn a cheap purchase into an expensive one.

Model RepairPal annual average CarEdge first-10-year estimate Best for Main caveat
Toyota Corolla $362 $4,434 Lowest-risk mainstream ownership Used examples can command high prices; inspect CVT service and rust
Toyota Prius $408 $4,359 Fuel savings Hybrid battery and related-system inspection is essential
Toyota Camry $388 $4,580 More passenger and trunk space Fleet use, V6 equipment, transmission behavior, and age-related wear
Honda Civic $368 $5,632 Compact practicality with more driving enjoyment Powertrain variation and recall history differ by year and VIN
Mazda3 $433 About $5,700 Driving feel and interior quality Less rear-seat room and slightly higher projected costs

How to read these numbers: RepairPal’s figures are averages for repair and maintenance expenses across model years, emphasizing unscheduled repairs and maintenance. CarEdge estimates maintenance, normal wear items, and expected repairs during the first 10 years of ownership beginning when the car is new. They are not quotes for a particular used car, mileage, state, or repair shop. The Mazda3 estimate is the approximate figure reported in current exact-title coverage. Neither source represents total ownership cost.

What makes a used car cheap to maintain?

The strongest candidates usually have a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine or a mature hybrid system, a non-performance-oriented tune, front-wheel drive, and a powertrain that has been sold in large numbers for many years. Those traits create a deep supply of aftermarket, used, and salvage parts and give independent repair shops plenty of experience with common failures.

Simple mechanical design helps, but it is not enough by itself. A cheap-to-service engine in a car with severe rust, a neglected transmission, flood damage, or hidden accident repairs can cost much more than a more complex car with complete records. Model year, engine, transmission, mileage, prior use, climate, and maintenance history matter more than simply choosing a Japanese brand.

It is also important to separate four different expenses:

  • Scheduled maintenance: Oil, filters, fluids, spark plugs, coolant, brake fluid, tire rotations, and inspections.
  • Wear items: Tires, brake pads, rotors, batteries, belts, wiper blades, struts, and suspension components.
  • Unscheduled repairs: Failures that are not part of the normal service schedule.
  • Total ownership cost: Maintenance and repairs plus fuel, insurance, registration, taxes, financing, depreciation, and sometimes collision damage.

The cost figures in the table address the first three categories to varying degrees. They do not tell you which car will have the lowest fuel bill or insurance premium in your ZIP code.

1. Toyota Corolla: the best default answer

Best for: Buyers who want the lowest-risk, lowest-complexity mainstream sedan or hatchback.

The Corolla is the most defensible all-around choice for a buyer who values low repair bills above performance or luxury. It is common across the U.S., familiar to independent mechanics, economical to fuel, and supported by abundant replacement parts. Its large sales volume also makes it easier to find several comparable examples rather than settling for the first cheap car advertised.

Years and configuration to target

  • Target range: Approximately 2015–2022, with condition and documentation prioritized over a particular model year.
  • Especially attractive generation: Well-maintained 2014–2019 examples are often mechanically straightforward and plentiful for budget shoppers.
  • Best configuration: A four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive sedan or hatchback in a regular trim rather than a performance-oriented version.
  • Transmission priority: Confirm the exact transmission and look for evidence that the correct fluid and service procedures were followed. Do not assume a CVT is either automatically unreliable or maintenance-free.

RepairPal gives the Corolla a 4.5 out of 5 reliability rating, ranks it first among 36 compact cars, and reports an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $362. Its reported probability of a severe repair is 7%. CarEdge estimates $4,434 in maintenance and repairs during the first 10 years under its methodology.

Those are useful screening figures, not a guarantee. RepairPal blends multiple model years, while CarEdge describes a cost curve beginning with a new vehicle. A 160,000-mile Corolla bought with no records is not represented perfectly by either average.

What to inspect

  • Transmission operation, including delayed engagement, shuddering, whining, or abnormal engine-speed changes.
  • Evidence of regular oil service and the correct transmission-fluid service.
  • Oil leaks or signs of oil consumption on high-mileage examples.
  • Underbody rust, particularly on cars from road-salt states.
  • Alignment and tire wear that could reveal accident damage or worn suspension parts.
  • Signs of rental, fleet, delivery, or rideshare use.
  • Open safety recalls by VIN rather than by model name alone.

Who should avoid a particular Corolla: Anyone tempted by a very cheap example with a rebuilt title, missing service history, transmission symptoms, severe rust, or a recently cleared warning light. A clean, documented Civic or Mazda3 can be a better buy than a neglected Corolla.

2. Toyota Prius: the fuel-saving choice

Best for: Drivers who put many miles on a car and want excellent fuel economy with potentially low brake and routine-service costs.

The Prius can be unusually inexpensive to operate because its hybrid system reduces fuel consumption and regenerative braking can reduce friction-brake wear. Toyota has also produced the system for many years, creating extensive repair knowledge and a large supply of replacement parts.

Years and configuration to target

  • Target range: Approximately 2017–2022, subject to a hybrid-system inspection and recall verification.
  • Possible budget option: A 2016 may still be worth considering, but early-build and high-mileage examples deserve additional scrutiny.
  • Best configuration: A standard front-wheel-drive Prius hatchback rather than a plug-in model if purchase price and mechanical simplicity are the priorities.
  • Condition requirement: No hybrid warning lights, no unexplained battery symptoms, and documented or independently verified hybrid-system health.

RepairPal reports a 4.0 out of 5 Prius reliability rating, an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $408, and an 11% severe-repair probability in its data. CarEdge estimates about $4,359 over the first 10 years for maintenance and repairs.

Many high-mileage Priuses have survived taxi and rideshare duty, which demonstrates the durability of the platform. It also means that a high-mileage example may have experienced long periods of idling, constant stop-and-go driving, curb strikes, heavy interior wear, or deferred maintenance. High mileage alone is not disqualifying, but commercial-use evidence should affect the price and inspection standard.

Hybrid-specific risks

A Prius can be cheap to run for years and still expose its next owner to a large hybrid-system bill. Have a qualified Toyota hybrid technician or specialist check:

  • Traction-battery condition and imbalance between battery modules.
  • The battery-cooling fan and passages for dust, pet hair, and debris.
  • Hybrid-control-system diagnostic codes, not just the basic engine computer.
  • Inverter operation and relevant coolant service.
  • Electronically controlled braking and the brake actuator.
  • The 12-volt battery, which can cause confusing electrical symptoms when weak.
  • Air-conditioning operation, suspension wear, coolant leaks, and warning-light history.

Do not buy on the assumption that a Prius battery is guaranteed to last a particular mileage. An unusually low price is a reason to obtain a hybrid-battery health report, not proof of a bargain.

Before purchase, run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. The search identifies unrepaired safety recalls for that specific vehicle, and eligible recall repairs are generally performed free by a manufacturer’s dealer.

Who should avoid a particular Prius: Buyers who cannot arrange a hybrid inspection, cars with hybrid warning messages, neglected battery cooling, flood exposure, or an unclear history of taxi or rideshare use.

3. Toyota Camry: low-cost ownership with more room

Best for: Buyers who need more rear-seat and trunk space than a Corolla, Civic, or Mazda3 provides.

The Camry combines a large U.S. installed base with relatively straightforward four-cylinder mechanicals and broad independent-shop support. That makes it a good choice for families and commuters who do not want to pay a premium for an SUV merely to gain space.

Years and configuration to target

  • Target range: Approximately 2015–2023.
  • Best cost-focused version: Four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive LE or SE.
  • Hybrid option: A Camry Hybrid can be a sensible choice, but it needs the same separate hybrid-battery, inverter, and brake-system checks as a Prius.
  • Higher-cost choices: V6 and sport-oriented versions can increase fuel, tire, brake, and insurance costs even when their basic reliability is strong.

RepairPal ranks the Camry third among 24 midsize cars, with an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $388, about 0.3 unscheduled repair visits per year, and an 11% reported probability of a severe repair. CarEdge estimates $4,580 over the first 10 years for maintenance and repairs.

Reported Camry complaints include automatic-transmission hesitation and oxygen-sensor failures. Treat those database reports as inspection prompts—not evidence that every Camry has the same defect. On any test drive, the transmission should engage promptly and shift without harshness, flare, or hesitation.

What to inspect

  • Transmission behavior when cold and fully warmed up.
  • Oil leaks, cooling-system neglect, radiator and hose condition, and evidence of overheating.
  • Air-conditioning performance at idle and while driving.
  • Struts, control-arm bushings, wheel bearings, engine mounts, and brake components on high-mileage cars.
  • Signs of former taxi, rental, fleet, or rideshare service.
  • V6-specific fuel, tire, and maintenance costs if considering a non-four-cylinder model.

Toyota’s maintenance and warranty guides, such as the 2017 Camry guide and 2020 Camry Hybrid guide, are better references than a generic internet service chart. Use the guide for the exact year and powertrain.

Who should avoid a particular Camry: Buyers who do not need its extra space and would pay more for a heavily used, oversized, V6, or rusty example. A smaller Corolla with complete records may cost less overall.

4. Honda Civic: the all-around compact alternative

Best for: Drivers who want low running costs and strong parts availability without giving up as much driving enjoyment.

The Civic has a broad U.S. market, good fuel economy, strong resale demand, and a deep supply of independent repair expertise. It is usually more engaging than a basic Corolla while remaining far less expensive to own than a performance compact.

Years and configuration to target

  • Target range: Approximately 2017–2021.
  • Budget alternative: A well-maintained 2013–2015 Civic can make sense when purchase price is the overriding concern.
  • Best cost-focused configuration: A naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder where available, in a regular sedan or hatchback trim.
  • Generally avoid for this brief: Si and Type R models, heavily modified cars, and turbocharged versions with vague oil and transmission service histories.

RepairPal reports a $368 average annual repair and maintenance cost for the Civic. CarEdge estimates $5,632 over the first 10 years and a 16.08% probability of a major repair under its methodology. CarEdge defines a major repair as one exceeding $500 including parts and labor; that figure is not a prediction that a particular Civic will fail.

Follow the actual Honda maintenance history

Honda’s Maintenance Minder system displays codes instead of one universal mileage schedule. In the linked Honda maintenance reference, the codes include:

  • A: Replace engine oil.
  • B: Replace oil and filter; inspect brakes, steering, suspension, driveshaft boots, fluids, exhaust, and fuel lines.
  • 1: Rotate tires.
  • 2: Replace the air-cleaner and cabin filters and inspect the drive belt.
  • 3: Replace transmission fluid.
  • 4: Replace spark plugs and inspect valve clearance.
  • 5: Replace engine coolant.
  • 7: Replace brake fluid.

The precise requirements vary by model year, engine, transmission, and driving conditions. Honda also says oil should be changed annually if a Maintenance Minder message does not appear within 12 months, and transmission fluid may need more frequent service during certain mountain-driving conditions. Retrieve the guide for the exact vehicle rather than assuming this code list applies identically to every Civic.

Recalls and inspection points

Certain 2016–2021 Civics were included in a fuel-pump-motor safety recall because defective impellers could swell and cause the pump to fail. Certain 2019–2020 Civics were also involved in related fuel-pump campaigns. Honda’s recall bulletin explains the affected fuel-pump issue. Newer Civics have had other campaigns, including steering-related recalls, so a VIN lookup is mandatory.

During inspection, check the CVT or automatic transmission for shuddering, delayed engagement, whining, slipping, and abnormal RPM behavior. Check air-conditioning performance, turbocharged-engine service records where applicable, tire wear, suspension noise, and evidence of accident repairs.

Who should avoid a particular Civic: Anyone treating the nameplate as a guarantee across every generation. Civic engines, transmissions, electronics, recalls, and air-conditioning systems vary substantially by year and trim.

5. Mazda3: the best choice for driving enjoyment

Best for: Buyers who want a car that feels more polished and enjoyable than a basic commuter but still has reasonable repair costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Mazda3 is not necessarily the absolute cheapest car in this comparison. Its advantage is the balance between affordable service, good handling, a well-designed interior, and a choice of sedan or hatchback body styles. It is a particularly strong alternative for someone who would otherwise stretch toward a more expensive or more complicated sport sedan.

Years and configuration to target

  • Target range for a mature third-generation car: Approximately 2017–2018.
  • Newer alternative: A carefully inspected 2019–2021 example if newer styling, safety equipment, and interior features matter more.
  • Best cost-focused powertrain: Naturally aspirated 2.0- or 2.5-liter engine with the six-speed automatic or manual transmission.
  • For minimum repair exposure: Prefer a non-turbo trim, especially when records are incomplete.

RepairPal gives the Mazda3 a 4.0 out of 5 reliability rating, ranks it ninth among 36 compact cars, and reports an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $433. Its reported severe-repair probability is 10%. Consumer Reports describes the 2014–2018 generation as having efficient engines, smooth transmissions, strong handling, and a modern interior, while noting its relatively tight rear seating; its Mazda3 model history also identifies improvements made for 2017.

Maintenance schedule and known issues

For a 2018 Mazda3, Mazda specifies engine oil and filter service when the maintenance indicator activates, but no later than 12 months or 7,500 miles. The same schedule calls for the first coolant replacement at 120,000 miles or 10 years, then every 60,000 miles or five years; spark plugs every 75,000 miles; tire rotation at oil-service intervals, no later than 7,500 miles; and cabin-air-filter replacement at equivalent service timing, with a maximum of 24 months or 30,000 miles. See the official 2018 Mazda3 schedule and its severe-driving schedule. These intervals should not automatically be applied to another model year.

Severe service includes repeated short trips, dusty roads, heavy braking, salt exposure, rough roads, prolonged idling, extreme temperatures, and continuous mountain driving. A car used in those conditions may need more frequent service than the maximum intervals suggest.

Inspect for infotainment faults, suspension noise, rust, worn interior components, uneven tire wear, and accident repairs. Certain 2014–2016 Mazda3 vehicles had fuel-tank welding recalls. Certain 2014–2018 five-door hatchbacks had a rearview-camera wiring recall that could cause image distortion or flickering. The hatchback distinction matters: do not assume every sedan was affected. Check the VIN and recall completion using NHTSA’s lookup tool; Mazda’s rear-camera recall document describes the affected hatchbacks.

Who should avoid a particular Mazda3: Buyers who need generous rear-seat space, want the cheapest possible tire and repair bills, or are considering a turbocharged or modified example without complete records.

Why the cost estimates are useful—but not directly comparable

RepairPal and CarEdge answer different questions:

  • RepairPal: Averages annual repair and maintenance costs across many model years and emphasizes unscheduled repairs and maintenance. Labor rates and parts prices vary by location.
  • CarEdge: Estimates maintenance, normal wear items, and expected repairs over the first 10 years starting with a new vehicle. That is not the same as buying a 100,000-mile car today.

A hybrid-battery failure, turbocharger, brake actuator, transmission, air-conditioning system, infotainment module, or advanced driver-assistance component can be rare but expensive. Conversely, a car that is inexpensive at 40,000 miles may need substantial age-related work at 160,000 miles. The figures establish a shortlist; a pre-purchase inspection determines whether a specific car belongs on your shortlist.

CarEdge’s estimates include maintenance, normal wear items, and expected repairs, but not fuel, insurance, registration, taxes, financing, depreciation, or collision damage. Therefore, the list is about maintenance and repair exposure—not a complete ranking of total ownership cost.

When a high-mileage example can still be a good buy

Reliable models do not become bad purchases at a particular odometer reading. A 140,000-mile car with consistent records and a clean inspection can be safer financially than a 75,000-mile car that missed fluid changes and spent years outside in a corrosive climate.

At roughly 120,000 miles and beyond, budget for age-related work even on these models:

  • Struts, shocks, control-arm bushings, engine mounts, and wheel bearings.
  • 12-volt batteries, alternators, or starters on conventional cars.
  • Air-conditioning components, cooling-system hoses, radiators, and thermostats.
  • Brake calipers, brake lines, exhaust components, and catalytic-converter issues.
  • Sensors, electronic modules, door hardware, and other age-related electrical repairs.
  • Rust-related repairs, especially on cars exposed to road salt.

A low annual average does not mean the owner will never face a $1,000 repair. It means the model has historically offered a better chance of keeping routine and unexpected costs manageable than a more complex or less common alternative.

CVTs, turbochargers, hybrids, and rust: the exceptions that change the answer

CVT-equipped cars

Some Corollas and many Civics use continuously variable transmissions. Do not repeat the simplistic claim that every CVT is unreliable or that every CVT needs no maintenance. Confirm the exact transmission, verify the correct fluid was used, and look for documented service. During a test drive, watch for shuddering, delayed engagement, whining, slipping, abnormal RPM behavior, or transmission warning lights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turbocharged engines

Turbocharged Civic and Mazda3 variants can be reliable when correctly maintained, but turbochargers add components and potential failure modes compared with naturally aspirated engines. For a buyer specifically optimizing for inexpensive maintenance, the naturally aspirated engine is the more conservative choice.

Rust and climate

A car from the Northeast, Great Lakes, coastal areas, or any region that uses road salt may have much higher future repair costs than an identical car from a dry climate. Put the vehicle on a lift and inspect the subframes, brake and fuel lines, suspension mounting points, rocker panels, wheel arches, exhaust, door seams, hatch seams, and underbody fasteners.

Dry-climate cars are not automatically perfect. Heat, UV damage, flood exposure, neglected cooling systems, and brittle interior components create different risks.

Insurance and tires

A Lexus IS can have a favorable mechanical repair average compared with German luxury sedans while still costing more to insure and maintain because of premium tires, larger brakes, higher labor rates, fuel requirements, AWD components, and luxury electronics. A Mazda3 on larger wheels can cost more for tires than a base Corolla. A Prius may save fuel but have different insurance costs depending on region.

Used-car inspection checklist

Use this checklist before leaving a deposit. It is more valuable than choosing between two models based on a few dollars in annual averages.

  1. Run the VIN: Check NHTSA’s recall database and confirm that open safety recalls have been repaired. Also obtain a title and history report.
  2. Verify the title: Reject undisclosed salvage, flood, fire, or serious structural damage. A cosmetically attractive repair can conceal expensive alignment, corrosion, or electrical problems.
  3. Review records: Look for oil, fluid, brake, coolant, spark-plug, and transmission service appropriate to the exact engine and transmission.
  4. Start it cold: Arrange to see the car before it has been warmed up. Listen for abnormal rattles, observe exhaust behavior, and confirm that warning lights illuminate during the self-test and then turn off normally.
  5. Scan all modules: Use a capable scan tool or inspection shop, not only a basic engine-code reader. Check for stored and pending codes, including hybrid, airbag, ABS, transmission, and driver-assistance systems.
  6. Test the transmission: Drive from cold to fully warm. Check reverse, low-speed engagement, acceleration, highway operation, and braking transitions.
  7. Test the air conditioner: It should produce cold air at idle and while moving. A weak system can become a significant repair bill.
  8. Inspect the underside: Look for rust, fluid leaks, bent components, fresh undercoating, damaged subframes, and evidence of collision repair.
  9. Check tires and brakes: Measure tread and inspect for matching tires, uneven wear, cracked sidewalls, thin pads, deeply rusted rotors, and pulling under braking.
  10. For a Prius or Camry Hybrid: Obtain a hybrid-battery health report and have the battery cooling fan, inverter, brake system, and 12-volt battery evaluated.
  11. Get an independent pre-purchase inspection: Choose a shop that does not work for the seller. Budget for the inspection even if the seller says the car was recently checked.

Do not allow a seller to dismiss warning lights as a minor sensor issue without a scan and diagnosis. A dashboard light that has recently been reset can disappear temporarily while codes and readiness monitors reveal that the vehicle is not ready for sale.

The Lexus IS exception: inexpensive luxury, not the cheapest ownership

The Lexus IS is a legitimate alternative when the buyer wants a luxury badge, rear-wheel-drive handling, and relatively controlled repair costs. It should not replace the Corolla on a list of the five cheapest mainstream cars to maintain.

RepairPal reports an average annual repair cost of $428 for the IS 300 and $543 for the IS 350. CarEdge estimates about $5,782 over 10 years for the IS and about $5,891 for the IS 350. Those figures are favorable against many German luxury sedans, but higher than the Corolla, Prius, and Camry estimates in this comparison.

Allow for premium tires, more expensive brakes, higher insurance, possible premium-fuel requirements or recommendations, dealer labor rates, electronic equipment, larger wheels, performance tires, AWD components, and more expensive cosmetic repairs. Avoid the IS F, heavily modified cars, and aggressively driven examples if predictable maintenance is the priority.

Bottom line on the IS: Choose it only when luxury matters enough to accept higher non-repair ownership costs. It is cheap for a luxury sedan, not dirt cheap compared with a Corolla.

Other cars worth considering

These models can make sense for specific buyers but do not displace the five main recommendations under the same criteria:

  • Honda Fit: Excellent interior packaging and generally affordable service, but it was discontinued in the U.S. after 2020 and can be expensive for its size. The available RepairPal Fit page does not provide the same model-specific annual figure used for the Civic, so no precise cost comparison should be invented.
  • Toyota Yaris: Simple and economical, but less common and sometimes overpriced relative to a Corolla.
  • Toyota Prius c: Efficient and mechanically credible, but smaller and older than most standard Prius examples.
  • Honda Accord: A good larger-car alternative, although the Camry is the cleaner fit for the lowest-cost theme.
  • Toyota RAV4: A sensible choice for buyers who require an SUV, but used prices, tires, brakes, and AWD components can increase ownership costs.
  • Lexus ES: A comfort-oriented luxury alternative that may suit buyers better than the sportier IS, but it still carries luxury-car purchase and ownership costs.
  • Mitsubishi Mirage: Often inexpensive to purchase and simple to service, but safety, refinement, highway comfort, performance, and long-term buyer appeal require separate consideration.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the Toyota Corolla if minimizing mainstream repair risk and complexity is the priority.
  • Choose the Toyota Prius if fuel economy matters most and a qualified technician confirms the hybrid system is healthy.
  • Choose the Toyota Camry if you need more passenger and trunk space without moving to an SUV.
  • Choose the Honda Civic if you want a compact car with low costs and more engaging driving dynamics.
  • Choose the Mazda3 if you want the best balance of sensible ownership costs and driver appeal.
  • Choose the Lexus IS only if luxury matters and you accept higher tires, insurance, fuel, and equipment costs.

The ranking can be overturned by condition. Prioritize a clean title, complete records, an independent inspection, no active warning lights, no open safety recalls, reasonable rust condition, even tire wear, correct fluids, and no evidence of flood, smoking, severe commercial, or heavily modified use. The cheapest car to maintain is usually the well-maintained example—not the one with the lowest sticker price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these cars maintenance-free?

No. They have relatively low expected maintenance and repair costs, but any used vehicle can need expensive work involving the transmission, air conditioning, suspension, electronics, rust, or—on a hybrid—the traction battery. Treat the model list as a starting point and inspect the individual car.

Is a high-mileage Prius still worth buying?

It can be, provided the vehicle has strong records and passes a hybrid-system inspection. Check traction-battery health, the battery-cooling fan, inverter and brake systems, stored diagnostic codes, and 12-volt battery condition. Do not assume the battery will last a particular number of miles.

Should I avoid a Corolla or Civic because it has a CVT?

Not automatically. Identify the exact transmission, confirm that the correct fluid was used, and look for documented service. During a test drive, reject examples with shuddering, delayed engagement, whining, slipping, abnormal RPM behavior, or transmission warning lights.

Do RepairPal and CarEdge costs show what my used car will cost?

No. RepairPal averages expenses across model years, while CarEdge estimates maintenance, wear items, and expected repairs over the first 10 years starting with a new vehicle. Neither accounts perfectly for a neglected, rusty, high-mileage car or for your local labor rates.

The Bottom Line

For the lowest-risk mainstream purchase, start with a well-maintained Toyota Corolla. Pick the Prius for fuel savings, the Camry for space, the Civic for all-around compact appeal, or the Mazda3 for a more enjoyable drive. In every case, a clean title, complete service records, VIN recall check, and independent pre-purchase inspection matter more than a few dollars of difference between published cost averages.
