Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 Best Buy awards identify the Hyundai Kona, Honda CR-V, Kia Telluride and Ford Expedition as category leaders. A fifth electric choice requires clarification: KBB’s official 2025 awards name the Kia EV9 as Best 3-Row EV and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 as Best Electric Vehicle, while a 2025 SlashGear roundup uses the Hyundai Ioniq 9 as its electric-SUV pick. The right choice depends on size, seating, powertrain, cargo, towing and local pricing—not the award label alone.
The five-SUV shortlist
The list below follows the five-model framing used by SlashGear in August 2025, while separating those claims from KBB’s official award categories.

What KBB officially awarded for 2025
KBB’s official 2025 Best Buy page names the Hyundai Kona (Best Subcompact SUV), Honda CR-V (Best Compact SUV), Kia Telluride (Best Midsize SUV), Ford Expedition (Best Full-Size SUV), Kia EV9 (Best 3-Row EV) and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Best Electric Vehicle). Therefore, the Ioniq 9 should not be presented as KBB’s official 2025 electric winner without qualification.
Kia EV9: KBB’s three-row EV winner
KBB calls the EV9 family-friendly and cites 304 miles of range for its 2025 award. It is the most direct KBB match if you need three rows and battery power. Actual range depends on configuration, wheels, weather and driving conditions, so compare the specific version available in your area.

Hyundai Ioniq 5: KBB’s electric-vehicle winner
KBB describes the Ioniq 5 as capable of carrying families and gear, with many standard features and useful technology at a reasonable price. It is a two-row crossover rather than a three-row family SUV, making it a different answer from the EV9.
How to choose among the gas, hybrid and electric options
Start with size and seating
- Urban driving and a lower purchase price: The Kona is the smallest and easiest to place in tight spaces.
- One- or two-child households: The CR-V offers compact dimensions with unusually useful cargo capacity.
- Three-row family duty: The Telluride, Expedition and EV9 provide the relevant seating formats; the Expedition is the largest and most towing-oriented.
- Three-row electric driving: Compare the EV9 with the forthcoming or region-specific Ioniq 9 specifications rather than assuming they are identical.
Match the powertrain to your routine
Gas models remain simplest for long trips where refueling is frequent and predictable. The Kona and CR-V figures above are combined EPA-style ratings reported for particular configurations, not guarantees for every trim. The Telluride and Expedition prioritize space and capability, so their fuel consumption is generally a larger ownership consideration.

An EV can lower routine energy and maintenance costs when home charging is available, but charging access, winter conditions, towing and road-trip stops matter. Check the vehicle’s usable range, charging curve, connector compatibility and the charging network along your regular routes.

The CR-V’s reported 76.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume suits luggage, strollers and household errands. The Telluride adds a third row without moving to full-size dimensions. The Expedition is the logical choice when a 9,600-pound maximum tow rating is genuinely required, but the tow vehicle, trailer, payload, hitch equipment and occupants must all remain within the exact configuration’s limits.

How KBB says it evaluates Best Buy vehicles
KBB says its review staff drive and evaluate hundreds of vehicles, narrow candidates in summer and test them at its Irvine headquarters. Its assessment includes seating and entry, luggage space, amenities, infotainment, build quality, competitive pricing, expected resale value and operating costs. KBB executive editor Brian Moody said, “We test each vehicle in the market with the everyday driver in mind, and the Best Buy Award winners ultimately reflect true excellence among today’s new cars.”
That methodology explains why a KBB award is broader than a horsepower or fuel-economy contest: ownership value, usability and likely resale performance count alongside the driving experience.

A practical buying process for 2025
- Set the non-negotiables. Decide whether you need two or three rows, all-wheel drive, a tow rating, a home-charging setup or a specific cargo floor length.
- Compare like-sized trims. An entry Kona, a well-equipped CR-V, a Telluride and an Expedition serve different budgets; compare equipment and transaction prices within the same class.
- Verify current local numbers. MSRP, incentives, dealer inventory, destination charges, taxes and EV availability vary by geography and date.
- Price ownership, not just the sticker. Include fuel or electricity, insurance, tires, maintenance, financing and expected resale value.
- Test the real use case. Bring child seats, measure the cargo area, sit in the third row, connect your phone and perform the parking or charging routine you will actually use.
- Check the exact vehicle’s safety equipment and ratings. Driver-assistance features, crash-test results and standard equipment can vary by trim and model year.
Which one is the best value?
There is no universal winner because “value” changes with the job. The Kona is the affordability-focused subcompact. The CR-V is the balanced compact choice for space and efficiency. The Telluride makes the strongest case for a well-equipped midsize three-row SUV. The Expedition earns its cost when full-size room or serious towing is essential. For electric families, KBB’s EV9 award is the clearest 2025 three-row recommendation, while the Ioniq 5 is the smaller two-row EV choice.
