It combines useful cargo space, available all-wheel drive, and strong fuel economy without the price or size of Toyota’s larger SUVs. Families that need a genuinely usable third row should step up to the Grand Highlander Hybrid, while buyers who actually plan to drive difficult trails should consider the Land Cruiser.
The four weakest fits for a broad audience are the bZ4X for frequent road trips, the Sequoia for general family value, the 4Runner for efficiency-minded commuters, and the gas-powered Corolla Cross because its hybrid sibling is substantially more compelling. “Worst” here does not mean unsafe, unreliable, or unsuitable for everyone. It means the vehicle has a larger compromise than the alternatives for the typical Toyota SUV shopper.

How these Toyota SUV rankings were determined
The strongest choices solve common buyer needs with relatively few major compromises. The weaker choices may be excellent for a narrower use case but are less convincing when judged on everyday usefulness, efficiency, passenger and cargo packaging, capability relative to price, independent safety evidence, and the seriousness of their trade-offs.
This is not a reliability survey. The available research does not establish a current, comparable reliability dataset for every 2025 Toyota SUV, so it would be misleading to use this list as a reliability ranking.
The three best Toyota SUVs for 2025
| Rank | Model | Best for | Why it stands out |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid | Most shoppers | Efficient, practical, available with AWD, and easier to live with than Toyota’s larger SUVs |
| 2 | 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid | Families needing three rows | Adult-usable third row, substantial cargo space, and a useful hybrid option |
| 3 | 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser | Serious off-road use | Authentic trail capability, strong torque, and a more manageable size than a full-size SUV |
1. 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: best overall
The RAV4 Hybrid is the most defensible all-around winner in Toyota’s 2025 SUV range. It is large enough for everyday family and cargo duties but still compact enough to avoid the bulk, higher operating costs, and parking headaches associated with Toyota’s full-size models.
Toyota’s relevant manufacturer-estimated rating was 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway for the RAV4 Hybrid configuration cited in the 2025 lineup information. That is a substantial advantage over the conventional gas RAV4 and helps explain why the hybrid is the version to prioritize. Available all-wheel drive adds confidence in poor weather and light unpaved use without turning the RAV4 into a specialized off-road vehicle.
The RAV4 also came with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 and modern multimedia technology. Its independent safety record was generally strong but not flawless. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the 2025 model Good in small-overlap front crashworthiness, headlights, and pedestrian front-crash prevention. However, the updated moderate-overlap and side evaluations were not perfect; the side evaluation was Acceptable overall, and rear-passenger head protection was rated Marginal in the cited test.
That nuance matters. The RAV4 is not accurately described as unsafe, but neither should its test results be presented as uniformly best-in-class. Buyers should also remember that the 2025 RAV4 was the final year of an aging fifth-generation design. Toyota’s announcement of the redesigned 2026 RAV4 may affect pricing, inventory, and the decision to buy a remaining 2025 vehicle.
Best fit: A commuter, couple, or family that wants one reasonably efficient SUV for errands, road trips, winter weather, and ordinary cargo duties.

Main drawbacks: It is not a true three-row vehicle, its safety results were mixed in some updated tests, and buyers seeking the newest design may prefer to compare it with the redesigned 2026 model.
2. 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: best family SUV
If the RAV4 is too small and the Sequoia is too excessive, the Grand Highlander Hybrid is Toyota’s best middle ground for families. Its key advantage is not simply that it has three rows; it is that the third row is intended to be genuinely usable, including for adults on shorter or moderate trips.
Toyota described the 2025 Grand Highlander as having room for seven small roller bags behind the rear seats and up to 97.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded. Those figures address the central weakness of many three-row crossovers: having enough seats but almost no useful luggage space when all of them are occupied.
The standard hybrid option used a 2.5-liter engine and carried a manufacturer-estimated 34 mpg combined rating. Gas and more powerful alternatives were also available, including the 362-horsepower Hybrid MAX. The ordinary hybrid is the better match for families focused on operating costs, while Hybrid MAX is aimed at buyers who place more value on acceleration and power than maximum efficiency.
Rank #2
- Versatile Car Phone Mount: Cell phone car mount boasts premium suction strength and an upgraded air vent clip, allowing for flexible installation options on windshields, dashboards, and air vents wall mounts. Note!3M Dashboard Pad is NOT REQUIRED when using a phone holder on windshield Pads Mats
- Strong Suction Performance: Car phone holder comes with a double-locked suction cup made of heat-resistant TPU material, guaranteeing it stays firmly attached to your dashboard even in extreme heat. Reactivate its sticky power by washing with water and air-drying Pads Mats.
- Fully Adjustable Design: Featuring a 360-degree rotating ball joint and an adjustable extension arm ranging from 3.7 inches to 5.9 inches, this dash-Mounted phone mount for cars allows you to customize your phone's placement to any desired angle or distance, offering maximum viewing flexibility Pads Mats.
- Universal Fit: Engineered to accommodate all smartphones ranging in size from 4.0 to 7.1 inches and devices up to 14mm thick, including GPS devices, this phone stand for trucks includes a one-touch release mechanism for swift and easy phone mounting. It serves as an excellent accessory for drivers requiring constant phone access, enhancing driving stability and safety Pads Mats.
- Comprehensive Safety Features: The car phone mount for iPhone includes a unique hook design fortified with stainless steel and padded with thick plastic, ensuring secure engagement with air vent blades without causing scratches. The robust silicone rubber provides sturdy protection, even on bumpy roads. Note: Not suitable for circular air vents desk mount Pads Mats.
The Grand Highlander’s IIHS results support its role as a serious family vehicle. It received Good ratings in the updated moderate-overlap front and side tests, along with Good results for standard vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian front-crash prevention. Its small-overlap front rating was Acceptable overall: the driver-side test was Acceptable and the passenger-side test was Good.
There is one important ownership step for anyone shopping used inventory or remaining 2025 stock: Toyota issued a recall affecting certain 2025 Grand Highlander vehicles for a backup-camera display issue. A recall applying to some vehicles is not proof that every Grand Highlander has the defect, but the buyer should verify the individual vehicle identification number and confirm that any required repair has been completed.
Best fit: A family that regularly carries six or seven people and needs usable luggage space behind the third row.
Main drawbacks: The hybrid costs more than the gas model, its 34-mpg combined rating is not compact-SUV territory, and its size and price may be unnecessary for a household that rarely uses the third row.
3. 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser: best for real off-road use
The 2025 Land Cruiser is the best choice in this group when the buyer genuinely values trail capability over low ownership cost. It is not the rational pick for someone whose driving consists almost entirely of commuting and shopping, but it is a legitimate tool for difficult unpaved roads, camping access routes, and recreational off-roading.
Toyota positioned the 250-series Land Cruiser as a capable off-road SUV with modern technology, premium features, and dedicated off-road aids. Its starting MSRP was $56,450 before Toyota’s dealer processing and handling fee. That is a significant amount for a midsize SUV, but the vehicle’s appeal comes from hardware and capability that a conventional crossover cannot replicate.
The hybridized turbocharged powertrain produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque in the broader 250-series specification family. Toyota’s 2025 pricing and lineup information displayed fuel economy of approximately 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. Those numbers are adequate for a rugged SUV, but they are not a reason to buy the Land Cruiser over a RAV4 Hybrid.

Its disadvantages are equally clear: high pricing, ordinary fuel economy, and rear-seat and cargo packaging that is less family-focused than the Grand Highlander.
Best fit: An owner who will regularly use forest roads, trails, rough access roads, or other terrain where ground clearance, traction, and off-road systems matter.
Main drawbacks: It is expensive for a midsize SUV, less efficient than Toyota’s hybrid crossovers, and too specialized for most suburban buyers.
The four weakest fits in Toyota’s 2025 SUV lineup
These are not vehicles that nobody should buy. Each has a legitimate audience. They rank lower because the compromises are more noticeable for broad, general-purpose buyers.

1. 2025 Toyota bZ4X: weakest road-trip EV proposition
The bZ4X is the weakest Toyota SUV choice for frequent long-distance travel, not necessarily the worst choice for every EV commuter. Its case improves considerably when the owner has dependable home charging and does most driving locally.
Toyota quoted a maximum EPA-estimated range of 252 miles for the front-wheel-drive XLE. Toyota also reduced the 2025 XLE MSRP to $37,070 and included a dual-voltage charging cable. A new lease or purchase came with one year of complimentary EVgo charging under the documented 2025 offer, subject to the offer’s eligibility and timing. That promotion and the lower price make the bZ4X more attractive than its earlier positioning, but they do not eliminate the practical limitations of range planning and charging stops.
The bZ4X’s safety credentials are a meaningful strength: IIHS named 2025 bZ4X vehicles built after December 2024 a Top Safety Pick+. But safety performance does not solve a charging problem. Compared with newer EVs, the bZ4X is a specialized purchase for people who can charge at home and do not routinely need effortless highway-distance travel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOwners should also check recall status by VIN. Toyota’s 2025 disclosures included bZ4X-specific issues, including a September 2025 recall involving windshield-defroster software and an October 2025 backup-camera recall affecting certain vehicles. These notices should not be generalized to every bZ4X; the individual vehicle’s repair status is what matters.
Best fit despite the ranking: A home-charged commuter EV buyer who values a lower purchase price and mostly drives within a predictable local area.
Main drawbacks: Limited road-trip convenience relative to newer EV choices, dependence on reliable charging access, and the need to check vehicle-specific recall status.
2. 2025 Toyota Sequoia: weakest family-value proposition
The Sequoia has real strengths: it is a powerful full-size hybrid SUV with substantial presence and towing-oriented capability. Toyota added a new 1794 grade, massaging front seats, and a new TRD Pro color for 2025. Buyers who need a large SUV for towing or who specifically want full-size dimensions may find the Sequoia appropriate.
For ordinary family transportation, however, the value proposition is less convincing. Toyota’s displayed 2025 pricing placed the Sequoia at a starting MSRP of roughly $62,425, while its cited manufacturer-estimated fuel economy was approximately 21 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. That means buyers pay full-size-SUV money and accept substantial exterior bulk without receiving the most practical passenger-and-luggage layout in Toyota’s lineup.
The central problem is the third-row and cargo compromise. The Sequoia can carry three rows, but families that regularly use all the seats and also need substantial luggage space should compare it carefully with the Grand Highlander. The Sequoia is more persuasive as a towing, size, and truck-like-presence purchase than as efficient family transportation.
Certain 2025 Sequoias also appeared in Toyota’s October 2025 backup-camera recall population. As with the Grand Highlander and bZ4X, the correct response is not to reject every vehicle automatically but to check the specific VIN and confirm recall completion before purchase.

- ✅【360° FREE ROTATION】 - With an adjustable swivel ball joint, you can rotate your smartphone or device at your own will, providing the best viewing angle. Quickly pick and place with one hand, free your hands and make calls and GPS navigation more convenient
Best fit despite the ranking: A buyer who needs full-size dimensions, towing capability, or the presence and power of a large hybrid SUV.
Main drawbacks: High price, low fuel economy compared with Toyota’s smaller hybrids, exterior bulk, and a less convincing third-row-and-cargo balance for family use.
3. 2025 Toyota 4Runner: weakest efficiency-and-safety compromise
The redesigned 2025 4Runner is a legitimate off-road SUV, and off-road buyers should not confuse its low position in this broad ranking with a lack of capability. Its problem is that the traits that make it desirable on trails are costly compromises for a commuter.
Toyota offered a turbocharged 2.4-liter i-FORCE engine producing up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. An available 326-horsepower i-FORCE MAX hybrid produced 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Toyota cited up to 26 mpg highway for the gas powertrain and up to 24 mpg highway for the hybrid.
The IIHS evaluation was uneven. The 4Runner earned a Good rating in the updated side test and Good results for its standard front-crash-prevention systems. However, the updated moderate-overlap front rating was Marginal, the small-overlap front evaluation was incomplete, and headlights varied sharply by trim. Some higher trims received Acceptable headlight ratings, while common SR5 and TRD configurations received Poor ratings in the cited evaluation.
Those results do not establish that the 4Runner is categorically unsafe. They do show why a buyer who values consistent crash-test performance, fuel economy, and ordinary road use should compare it with the RAV4 Hybrid or Grand Highlander Hybrid before choosing the more rugged model.
Best fit despite the ranking: An off-road enthusiast who needs the 4Runner’s ground clearance, traction systems, utility, and rugged design.
Main drawbacks: Lower efficiency than Toyota’s crossover hybrids, uneven trim-level lighting results, and a less favorable updated moderate-overlap result.
4. 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross: weakest gas-powertrain value
The gas Corolla Cross is not a bad small SUV, and its low starting price and compact dimensions are legitimate advantages. The problem is that Toyota’s own lineup makes the gas version difficult to recommend when the hybrid is within reach.
Toyota’s 2025 listing placed the gas Corolla Cross at a starting price of about $24,135, with approximately 31 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. The Corolla Cross Hybrid started around $28,495, was listed at approximately 45 mpg city and 38 mpg highway, and used a 196-net-horsepower hybrid system. Toyota said the hybrid could reach 60 mph in about eight seconds.
That roughly $4,360 starting-price difference buys a materially more efficient and quicker powertrain. The gas model therefore becomes the weaker value unless the lower upfront price is decisive, the buyer is comparing unusually discounted inventory, or the hybrid is unavailable in the desired configuration.

The Corolla Cross is not being placed low because of a safety failure. IIHS listed the 2025–2026 Corolla Cross as a Top Safety Pick, and the 2025 model’s crash-prevention and lighting evaluations were generally strong. This is primarily a powertrain-value and small-crossover limitation, not a claim that the gas model is unsafe.
Best fit despite the ranking: A budget-focused shopper who needs a small SUV and cannot justify the hybrid’s higher upfront cost.
Main drawbacks: The gas engine is less efficient and less appealing than the hybrid, while the vehicle remains limited in size compared with Toyota’s larger family SUVs.

Toyota Crown Signia: a niche but persuasive five-seat hybrid
The Crown Signia is difficult to classify as one of Toyota’s worst SUVs. It seats five rather than seven, but that is a deliberate format choice rather than a defect. Toyota gave it standard all-wheel drive, 240 net system horsepower, and a manufacturer-estimated 38 mpg combined rating. The XLE specification offered up to 68.8 cubic feet of cargo space.
Its best description is a stylish, premium-leaning five-seat hybrid wagon-SUV. It is not the right answer for a large family needing three rows, but it may be an excellent fit for buyers who want more style and refinement than a conventional compact SUV without moving to a full-size vehicle.
Toyota Highlander: still a credible midsize family SUV
The conventional Highlander is also not an obvious worst choice. The 2025 gas model offered seating for up to eight, while the Highlander Hybrid produced 243 net combined horsepower, up to a manufacturer-estimated 35 mpg combined, and up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity.
It is less spacious than the Grand Highlander, which is why the larger model wins the family category here. But buyers who want a more manageable midsize three-row SUV, especially those who do not need maximum cargo volume, should continue to consider the Highlander.

Which 2025 Toyota SUV should you buy?
- Choose the RAV4 Hybrid if you want the best balance of price, efficiency, size, cargo usefulness, and everyday versatility.
- Choose the Grand Highlander Hybrid if adults or older children will use the third row and you need luggage space with all seats occupied.
- Choose the Land Cruiser if difficult trails and off-road capability are central to the purchase, not merely part of the vehicle’s image.
- Choose the Crown Signia if you want a stylish five-seat hybrid with standard AWD and do not need three rows.
- Choose the Highlander Hybrid if you want three rows but can accept less space than the Grand Highlander.
- Choose the bZ4X only after confirming that home charging and your normal driving pattern fit its range and charging requirements.
- Choose the Sequoia when full-size space, towing, or presence matters more than efficient family value.
- Choose the 4Runner when off-road capability matters more than fuel economy and the broadest possible safety-test consistency.
- Choose the Corolla Cross Hybrid over the gas version when the additional upfront cost fits your budget.
2025 Toyota SUV buying checklist
- Confirm the exact model year. Do not assume a remaining 2025 RAV4 has the same equipment or specifications as the redesigned 2026 model.
- Check the trim and drivetrain. Fuel economy, headlights, cargo equipment, charging capability, and accessory fitment can change by trim, engine, and front- or all-wheel-drive configuration.
- Verify recalls by VIN. Pay particular attention to certain Grand Highlander, bZ4X, and Sequoia vehicles affected by backup-camera-related campaigns, as well as the bZ4X windshield-defroster software recall. You can check Toyota SUV recalls by VIN through an official Toyota or NHTSA destination before purchase.
- Test the third row with the cargo you actually carry. A vehicle can technically seat seven or eight people while still being a poor fit for a family that travels with luggage, strollers, sports equipment, or pets.
- Calculate real charging or fuel access. The bZ4X is most sensible with reliable home charging. The RAV4 Hybrid and Grand Highlander Hybrid are easier choices for buyers who want conventional refueling and lower fuel consumption.
- Match equipment to use. Recovery boards, recovery gear, roof equipment, and other accessories are useful only when they support a real activity. Verify fitment and load ratings rather than assuming that a product labeled for a model fits every 2025 trim.
Fuel economy figures above are manufacturer or EPA estimates identified in the 2025 research, and actual results vary with trim, weather, driving style, load, terrain, and temperature. MSRP figures are cited starting prices and may not include every destination, dealer, or regional charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Toyota SUV for most buyers in 2025?
The 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is the best overall fit for most shoppers because it combines available all-wheel drive, useful cargo space, compact-SUV dimensions, and manufacturer-estimated fuel economy of 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway in the cited configuration.
Which 2025 Toyota SUV is best for a family of six or seven?
The 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is the strongest family choice when the third row will be used regularly. It offers an adult-usable third row, space for seven small roller bags behind the rear seats, up to 97.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded, and a manufacturer-estimated 34 mpg combined rating for the hybrid.
Is the 2025 Toyota bZ4X a bad SUV?
No. It is a specialized choice rather than a universally bad one. The bZ4X can work well as a home-charged commuter EV, but its maximum cited range of 252 miles makes it less compelling for frequent road trips than newer or longer-range EV alternatives.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I buy the gas or hybrid 2025 Corolla Cross?
The Corolla Cross Hybrid is generally the more persuasive version if the budget allows. Toyota listed approximately 45 mpg city and 38 mpg highway for the hybrid versus about 31 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for the gas model, and the hybrid produces 196 net combined horsepower with an approximately eight-second 0-to-60-mph time.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner unsafe?
The research does not support calling it categorically unsafe. It received Good results in the updated side test and for standard front-crash prevention, but its updated moderate-overlap front rating was Marginal, its small-overlap evaluation was incomplete, and headlight performance varied by trim. It is best viewed as an off-road-focused SUV whose compromises matter more to commuters.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2025 RAV4 Hybrid is Toyota’s best all-around SUV, the Grand Highlander Hybrid is the best family choice, and the Land Cruiser is the right answer for genuine off-road use. The bZ4X, Sequoia, 4Runner, and gas Corolla Cross are not automatic mistakes; they simply require a more specific reason to overlook their range, price, efficiency, packaging, or powertrain compromises.
