A U.S. safety recall covers 250,547 certain 2021–2024 Kia K5 sedans with the 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine. Kia’s filing says a deteriorating fuel-tank purge-control check valve can allow pressure to build in the tank, which may expand into hot exhaust components and melt locally, potentially causing a fuel leak. NHTSA’s interim advisory is: “Do Not Drive Park Outside.” Check your vehicle by VIN and follow the instructions that apply to it.
Which Kia K5s are covered?
The U.S. recall is NHTSA campaign 25V794, also identified by Kia as campaign SC356. It covers 250,547 potentially involved K5s from model years 2021 through 2024 that were built at Kia’s Georgia plant between March 27, 2020, and January 23, 2024, and equipped with the 1.6L T-GDI engine. The recall does not include every K5 from those model years. Because vehicles were not produced in VIN order, model year alone cannot establish eligibility. Check the specific vehicle by VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup or contact a Kia dealer.

The 250,547 figure is the number potentially involved, not the number known to have a defect. The recall filing records Kia’s estimate that 1% of the population has the defect; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a finding about any individual vehicle. NHTSA’s VIN and license-plate searches identify whether a specific vehicle needs a recall repair. A year, make, and model search provides general recall information, not a vehicle-specific repair determination.
What should owners do now?
NHTSA’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report for 25V794 gives the consumer advisory: “Do Not Drive Park Outside.” Follow that advisory and any notice or interim instructions that apply to your vehicle. Check its VIN status and contact an authorized Kia dealer about the recall remedy rather than driving to a dealer without first clarifying what instructions apply.

NHTSA’s filing listed December 1, 2025, as the planned date for VINs to become searchable and January 16, 2026, as the planned start date for owner remedy letters. These were schedule dates in the filing; they do not confirm that an individual car has been repaired or that its status is unchanged. Use the current VIN lookup and contact Kia or a dealer for vehicle-specific status.
How can the fuel tank be damaged?
The reported failure starts when the purge-control system check valve deteriorates. Pressurized air may then enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand. If the expanded tank contacts hot exhaust parts, prolonged driving in that condition may cause localized melting and a fuel leak. NHTSA says a resulting fire would increase the risk of injury.

Possible warning signs
The recall filing lists a popping sound from the fuel-tank area, a Check Engine Light, and/or rough running as possible warnings. Their absence does not show that a K5 is outside the recall; eligibility and repair status must be checked by VIN.
What repair does the safety recall provide?
The filed remedy is dealer-performed service: replace the check valve with an improved design, inspect the fuel tank and replace it if necessary, and ensure the vehicle has the latest ECU software. A replacement tank or check valve bought separately does not replace the official recall remedy.

How does this differ from Kia’s earlier SC288 campaign?
Kia’s SC288 was a separate emissions-related service campaign. Its materials described ECM logic changes and emissions compliance work, with inspection and replacement of the fuel tank and/or PCSV check valve when needed. Those materials also listed signs such as tank swelling, difficulty filling the tank, a Check Engine Light, or rough running.
The later SC356 safety recall has its own NHTSA filing, improved-check-valve remedy, and explicit interim advisory. Do not assume an earlier SC288 visit automatically resolves SC356: check the current status of the vehicle by VIN. Kia’s SC288 Q&A cited approximately 236,694 vehicles for that separate campaign; that figure is not the population of the later 25V794 safety recall.

Does this recall apply in Canada?
The 250,547 figure is from the U.S. NHTSA filing. Transport Canada separately published recall 2025638 for certain 2021–2024 K5s with a 1.6L turbocharged engine in Canada. Its notice calls for check-valve replacement, an ECU software update, and fuel-tank inspection and replacement if needed. Canadian owners should use the Canadian campaign information and verify their own vehicle’s status rather than applying the U.S. population figure or campaign number.
What a recall lookup can—and cannot—tell you
NHTSA says its VIN and license-plate lookup reports whether a specific vehicle needs a recall repair, but the tool has limitations. It may not show a recall that has already been repaired, certain newly announced recalls before affected VINs are fully identified, recalls more than 15 years old (subject to manufacturer coverage), non-safety campaigns, or some international recalls. For a question about this K5 recall, confirm status with Kia or a dealer if the lookup result is unclear. NHTSA also offers its free SaferCar app for recall alerts.
