The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is the fastest production Mustang by Ford’s published top-speed figure: 202 mph. It is also the quickest of three recent Mustangs in Car and Driver’s October 2026 0–60 mph comparison, reaching the mark in 2.8 seconds. Those figures answer different questions, however, and the available evidence does not support a reliable, apples-to-apples ranking of 15 Mustangs. Here are the strongest documented benchmarks, with factory claims kept separate from independent testing and historical reports.
What does “fastest Mustang” mean?
Top speed, acceleration, and lap time measure different kinds of performance. A car can have a high maximum speed without being quickest off the line, while lap times depend on the circuit, tires, setup, weather, and driver. There is no single universal ranking unless the metric and test conditions are specified.
- Highest published top speed: Ford lists 202 mph for the 2025 Mustang GTD.
- Quickest 0–60 mph in the cited recent comparison: Car and Driver recorded 2.8 seconds for its 2025 GTD.
- Fastest Nürburgring lap among the cited figures: Ford lists a 6:40.835 lap for the GTD. A lap time is not a top-speed figure.
These benchmarks cannot be combined into a definitive 15-car historical order: comparable top-speed, acceleration, and lap-time data for 15 individual Mustang variants are not established by the sources cited here.
Documented Mustang performance benchmarks
| Model and year | Metric | Figure | Source and qualification |
| 2025 Mustang GTD | Top speed; power; torque | 202 mph; 815 hp; 664 lb-ft | Ford’s September 16, 2024 announcement. Manufacturer-published specifications and top-speed claim: Ford announcement. |
| 2025 Mustang GTD | Nürburgring lap | 6:40.835 | Ford’s current Mustang GTD page. This is a lap-time claim, distinct from maximum speed: Ford Mustang GTD. |
| 2025 Mustang GTD | 0–60 mph | 2.8 seconds | Car and Driver’s October 6, 2026 instrumented comparison; result for its tested car and configuration, not a universal guarantee: Car and Driver comparison. |
| 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC | Power; torque | 795 hp; 660 lb-ft | Ford’s 2026 announcement: Ford Dark Horse SC announcement. |
| 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC | 0–60 mph | 3.0 seconds | Car and Driver’s October 6, 2026 instrumented comparison; result for its tested car and configuration (Car and Driver comparison). |
| 2020 Shelby GT500 | 0–60 mph | 3.6 seconds | Car and Driver’s October 6, 2026 instrumented comparison; result for its tested car and configuration (Car and Driver comparison). |
| 2013–14 Shelby GT500 | Top speed | 202 mph | Shelby American’s historical account attributes the Nardo figure to SVT drivers. The accessible account does not state a date, and the reported result does not establish a tie with the GTD under identical conditions: Shelby American. |
| 2026 Mustang Dark Horse | Power; torque | 500 hp; 418 lb-ft | Ford’s current model page; this is the naturally aspirated Dark Horse, not the supercharged Dark Horse SC: Ford Mustang Dark Horse. |
| 2018 Mustang GT | 0–60 mph | Under four seconds | Ford Motor Company’s 2017 claim applies to a GT with Drag Strip mode, Performance Package, and 10-speed automatic: Ford 2018 Mustang GT announcement. |
How the leading claims compare
2025 Mustang GTD: Ford’s highest published top speed
Ford’s September 2024 announcement calls the GTD the fastest and most powerful production Mustang in history and gives it 815 hp, 664 lb-ft of torque, and a 202 mph top speed. Ford’s current GTD page separately lists a 6:40.835 Nürburgring lap. The top-speed and lap-time numbers describe different achievements; neither should be presented as the other.

In Ford’s announcement, Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall described its supercharged 5.2-liter V8 as “packing more horsepower per liter than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.” That is Goodall’s comparison in Ford’s announcement, rather than an independent measurement reported here.
2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC: a distinct supercharged model
Ford lists the Dark Horse SC at 795 hp and 660 lb-ft, with initial deliveries scheduled for summer 2026. It is not the same car as the naturally aspirated Dark Horse, which Ford lists at 500 hp and 418 lb-ft. Car and Driver’s comparison recorded 3.0 seconds to 60 mph for its tested Dark Horse SC, between the GTD and GT500 in that test.

Ford Global Director of Ford Racing Mark Rushbrook described the SC development goal as bringing “the exact tech transfer and lessons learned from our most grueling endurance races directly to our road cars.” That statement appeared in Ford’s Dark Horse SC announcement.
2020 Shelby GT500: acceleration result, not the 2013–14 Nardo report
Car and Driver recorded 3.6 seconds to 60 mph for its 2020 Shelby GT500 in the October 2026 comparison. Separately, Shelby American’s historical account reports a 202 mph Nardo figure for the 2013–14 GT500, attributed to SVT drivers. The latter is a distinct historical report, not evidence that the two GT500 generations and the GTD were measured in the same test.

2018 Mustang GT: a configuration-specific factory claim
Ford’s 2017 announcement said the 2018 Mustang GT could reach 60 mph in under four seconds when equipped with Drag Strip mode, the Performance Package, and the 10-speed automatic transmission. The qualification matters: the claim does not apply indiscriminately to every 2018 GT configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a ranked list of 15
The available figures document several notable Mustangs, but they do not provide a common test method or comparable measurements for 15 models across the Mustang’s history. Ranking a full 15-car field would require filling gaps with numbers that are not established here or mixing unlike results—such as a factory top-speed claim, a magazine’s acceleration test, and a reported historical high-speed run—as if they formed one consistent leaderboard.

For a defensible comparison, each entry would need a clearly identified variant and year, the same performance metric, and a source that states the test conditions or the scope of the manufacturer claim. Until those comparable records are available, the accurate answer is narrower: the GTD holds Ford’s published 202 mph production-Mustang top-speed claim, while the acceleration results above belong to Car and Driver’s specific three-car test.
