Camouflaged cars first pointed to a radically different lighting and body treatment, and Hyundai has since shown the eighth-generation sedan in South Korea under its Avante name. The Korean reveal confirms the design and several Korean-market specifications; U.S. pricing, trims, EPA ratings, engines and launch timing remain unannounced.
What the camouflaged prototype revealed
On June 23, 2026, Car and Driver reported that Hyundai was testing the next-generation Elantra ahead of an expected 2027 sale. The camouflage still exposed a distinctive lighting layout: thin LED light bars at both ends, perpendicular lighting elements at the outer edges and a small triangular window behind the C-pillar.

“The next-generation Hyundai Elantra has been spied testing, and we can begin to make out the quirky new design that’s hiding beneath the camouflage,” wrote Caleb Miller for Car and Driver on June 23, 2026.

Hyundai reveals the eighth-generation Avante in Korea
Hyundai introduced the eighth-generation Elantra—sold as the Avante in South Korea—at the 2026 Busan Auto Show, according to Motor1. The production car uses Hyundai’s “Art of Steel” design language and is longer and wider than its predecessor.
Exterior changes
- Sharp, tightly creased body surfacing replaces the softer visual treatment associated with the current model.
- H-motif headlamps and taillamps formalize the horizontal and perpendicular lighting cues visible on the prototypes.
- A broad ducktail spoiler gives the sedan a more pronounced rear profile.
Hyundai’s current Elantra design reference uses a Parametric Jewel-pattern grille, elongated headlights and H-shaped tail lamps. The new car keeps the H-theme but applies it to a more angular, sculpted body, explaining why the prototype appeared so different even while covered.

Korean-market cabin technology
Motor1 reported Hyundai’s Android-based Pleos infotainment system for the Korean-market car. A 12.9-inch touchscreen is standard, while a 14.6-inch display is optional. Hyundai has not confirmed that either screen, the Pleos software or the same equipment packaging will be offered on U.S.-specification Elantras.

United States
The earlier spy report projected continued four-cylinder and hybrid options but supplied no certified American specifications. Hyundai has not announced U.S. horsepower, emissions data, fuel-economy figures, transmission choices or whether the Korean engines will carry over unchanged.
The model matters to Hyundai’s American business: Car and Driver reported Hyundai’s figure of 148,200 Elantra sales in the prior year (2025). Even so, that sales result does not establish the next car’s U.S. equipment or timing.

What Hyundai has officially confirmed about timing
Hyundai’s August 26, 2026 CEO Investor Day release lists an “all-new ELANTRA” among products arriving soon as part of the company’s global product offensive. That is official confirmation that a new Elantra is in the product plan, but the release does not publish U.S. pricing, trim names, EPA figures or a precise American on-sale date.
What U.S. shoppers should watch for next
- U.S. reveal: Hyundai must identify the American-market body, safety equipment and cabin configuration.
- Powertrain certification: EPA horsepower, fuel economy, emissions and transmission information will determine how closely the U.S. car matches the Korean Avante.
- Trim and pricing announcement: No U.S. MSRP, destination charge, trim walk or option pricing has been released.
- Dealer timing: The 2027 model-year label is an expectation from the spy report, not a published U.S. delivery schedule.
Until those announcements arrive, the Korean Avante is the clearest view of the design direction, while the American Elantra remains an officially planned but incompletely specified version of the eighth-generation sedan.
