The Dark Horse SC uses a 5.2-liter supercharged, cross-plane-crank V8. Ford’s customer-order announcement rates it at 795 horsepower and 660 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is assembled by a single technician at Ford’s Dearborn Engine plant, according to Ford. Ford’s order announcement confirms the production output and engine-assembly detail.

Power reaches the rear wheels through a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission. A lightweight carbon-fiber driveshaft is standard. Ford’s current Dark Horse SC product page identifies the engine, transmission, and driveshaft.
That powertrain is why the GT500 comparison is unavoidable. The previous Shelby GT500 also paired a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. In broad mechanical terms, the SC inherits the GT500 formula. In positioning and development philosophy, however, it moves in a different direction.
Why it is a GT500 successor in function, not in name
Calling the Dark Horse SC a GT500 successor is useful if the phrase is defined carefully. It occupies the same basic space in the Mustang range: a high-output, supercharged-V8 model for buyers who want considerably more than the regular performance Mustang without buying the company’s extreme halo car.
Car and Driver describes the SC as the successor to the previous Shelby GT500 because of that market and performance position. That is an editorial classification, not a Ford announcement that the Shelby name has returned.
Ford’s official material calls the car the Mustang Dark Horse SC. It does not call it a Shelby, and it does not use the GT500 name. The accurate description is therefore Ford’s GT500 replacement in function, but not in name.
The difference is more than branding. The old GT500 was particularly associated with straight-line power and muscle-car character. Ford’s SC communications put much more emphasis on aero, cooling, suspension geometry, steering, tires, brakes, track testing, and technology transfer from the GT3 and GTD programs. Ford says the SC was tested alongside the Mustang GTD and GT4 at Sebring and Virginia International Raceway.

It is not simply a Dark Horse with a supercharger
Ford says engineers revisited nearly every system that matters when a roughly 500-hp performance coupe becomes a 795-hp track car. The changes include:

- A magnesium strut-tower brace
- Forged suspension links

That hardware list matters because adding a supercharger alone would not make the standard Dark Horse suitable for this level of output or sustained track use. The SC’s engineering brief includes the systems needed to put the power down repeatedly and manage the extra heat, speed, load, and aerodynamic demand.
Track Pack: the serious circuit specification
The available Track Pack turns the Dark Horse SC into a much more specialized track-day configuration. Ford says it includes:
- 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels
- Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes sourced from the Mustang GTD
- A package-specific MagneRide calibration
- Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires in 305/30R20 front and 315/30R20 rear sizes
- Rear-seat delete with a storage shelf
- Additional carbon-fiber aerodynamic components
Ford says the Track Pack reduces weight by approximately 150 pounds. The package also adds the factory-fitted Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, which are far more track-oriented than an ordinary high-performance street tire. Their presence tells you what the package is for: maximum circuit performance, not simply a more aggressive appearance package.
The Track Pack’s braking upgrade is equally significant. The standard SC already comes exclusively with Brembo brakes, using six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers with cast discs. Track Pack cars receive Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes derived from the GTD system. The factory system should not be treated as interchangeable with generic aftermarket components simply because they share a brand name.

Ford’s product page says the Track Pack’s ducktail and carbon-fiber rear wing generate 620 pounds of downforce at 180 mph. Ford also says the new aluminum hood and carbon-fiber vent improve cooling and aerodynamic management, and that removing the rain tray allows the hood to generate 2.5 times the standard Dark Horse’s downforce.

Those figures need context. They apply to specified hardware, speed, and configuration conditions; they are not a universal measurement of what the car produces during normal road driving. They also do not prove that the SC is faster around a circuit than a GT500 or GTD. Independent, controlled testing would be required for that comparison.
The aerodynamic changes nevertheless show how Ford is positioning the SC. This is not merely a high-horsepower Mustang with cosmetic track cues. The company has made cooling and aerodynamic load central to the car’s development.
Traction control built for more than commuting
The Dark Horse SC receives a Variable Traction Control system with five assistance levels and the option to deactivate stability control completely. Ford says the system was developed using experience from the GTD racing program.

It is not an invitation to experiment on public roads. Ford’s engineering feature and the 2026 Mustang owner’s manual make clear that Track Apps are intended for track use, while aggressive driving can result in loss of control or injury.

That does not mean the production Dark Horse SC shares all of the NASCAR car’s components, construction, or specifications. The NASCAR name adds future relevance to the SC badge, but it is not evidence of production-car lap times or direct component equivalence.
Bottom line: the closest thing to a new GT500
The Mustang Dark Horse SC is the closest current Ford product to a Shelby GT500 successor. It has the familiar supercharged 5.2-liter V8 and dual-clutch-transmission formula, but Ford has wrapped that power in a newer Ford Racing identity and a more explicit GTD/GT3-derived track-development story.
So the headline is accurate only with the distinction intact: GT500 power, but no Shelby.
