Tesla cut the U.S. price of its Full Self-Driving package from $12,000 to $8,000 in April 2024—a $4,000 reduction, or 33.3%—just days before its first-quarter earnings call. The timing invited speculation that Tesla was trying to make the software easier to buy or increase adoption before speaking to investors, but Tesla did not publicly establish that the earnings schedule caused the cut.

The price change was also narrower than the headline might suggest. It applied to the U.S. one-time purchase price at that moment; it was not a reduction in the price of a Tesla vehicle, and it should not be treated as a current price. As of August 12, 2026, Tesla’s U.S. support materials list FSD (Supervised) as a $99-per-month subscription and say outright purchase is no longer available.
What Tesla changed in April 2024
| Item | Before the change | After the change |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. one-time FSD price | $12,000 | $8,000 |
| Dollar reduction | $4,000 | |
| Percentage reduction | Approximately 33.3% | |
The arithmetic is straightforward: $4,000 divided by the former $12,000 price equals 0.333, or one-third. Reports at the time also described a reduction in the monthly subscription price from $199 to $99 and changes to Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot offering in the United States. The clearest fact tied to the headline, however, is the one-time FSD price moving from $12,000 to $8,000.

Those figures describe U.S. pricing in April 2024. They do not establish what Tesla charged in Canada, Europe, Asia, or any other market, and they do not show that every Tesla model or configuration had identical access to every feature.
The timing put the price cut under an investor spotlight
On April 2, Tesla announced that it would release its first-quarter 2024 results after market close on April 23 and hold a live question-and-answer webcast that day. The company also reported approximately 386,810 vehicle deliveries for the quarter. Deliveries are an important operating measure, but they are not a complete substitute for quarterly revenue, profit, cash flow, margins, or guidance.
Tesla lowered the U.S. FSD purchase price on April 20 or 21, according to contemporaneous reporting. The company then released its first-quarter results and held the scheduled earnings Q&A on April 23.
That sequence made the change commercially and financially notable. A lower upfront price could reduce the barrier for owners considering the software, while a lower monthly subscription could make a trial commitment less expensive. But the available announcements do not identify a specific adoption target, and they do not prove that Tesla made the cut because of weak demand or to influence the earnings conversation.
The defensible conclusion is more limited: the reduction came immediately before a planned investor discussion and could reasonably be interpreted as an effort to make FSD easier to purchase. Whether it materially increased sales or subscriptions was not established by the cited results or announcements.

Why “Full Self-Driving” does not mean autonomous driving
Tesla’s branding can make the $8,000 price sound like the cost of a driverless system. That is not what Tesla’s own documentation described. Tesla used the fuller name Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and warned that the enabled features did not make the vehicle autonomous.
Depending on the vehicle, software version, location, and configuration, the system could attempt to:

- Follow curves and negotiate intersections and roundabouts.

- Operate on residential and city streets.
These are driver-assistance functions, not permission for the driver to stop supervising. Tesla’s instructions required the driver to remain attentive, monitor the roadway, and be ready to take over immediately. The driver remained responsible for safe operation.
Supervision was an operating requirement, not a disclaimer to ignore
Tesla’s owner documentation described escalating attention warnings, use of the cabin camera to monitor the driver, and possible disengagement or suspension if warnings were repeatedly ignored. A lower price therefore bought access to a supervised assistance system—not hands-off autonomy or a driverless service.
Feature behavior and availability could also vary according to market, vehicle configuration, self-driving hardware, options purchased, and software version. A Tesla owner should confirm the exact feature set available to that vehicle rather than assume that the name “FSD” guarantees the same capabilities everywhere.

Documentation box: understand the system before using it
Owners comparing FSD features should read the documentation for their specific vehicle, including the Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual or the equivalent manual for another model. Pay particular attention to activation and cancellation controls, driver-attention warnings, camera requirements, limitations at intersections and on changing roads, and the circumstances in which the system may disengage.
This kind of manual or buyer’s guide is an operational reference, not evidence that FSD is autonomous. Tesla’s own instructions remain the controlling source for the vehicle’s current software and configuration.
The $8,000 figure is historical—not today’s U.S. purchase price
Tesla’s pricing model changed after the 2024 cut. As of August 12, 2026, Tesla’s official U.S. support information states that:
- FSD (Supervised) costs $99 per month.
- Access is subscription-only in the United States.
- Outright purchase is no longer offered.
- The previous FSD transfer program ended on March 31, 2026.
That means the April 2024 $8,000 price cannot be used as a current buying option. It is best understood as a historical snapshot of Tesla’s former one-time software pricing. A current comparison should distinguish an upfront purchase from a recurring subscription rather than placing $8,000 and $99 per month in the same category.
At $99 per month, a subscriber would pay $1,188 over 12 months, before considering any changes in Tesla’s price or eligibility rules. That simple calculation does not prove which option is cheaper over a particular ownership period: the one-time purchase was historical, and subscription availability, pricing, transfer rules, and features can change.

What the price cut did—and did not—tell investors
The cut showed that Tesla was willing to change the price of a major software feature rapidly. That matters because FSD has unusually high potential margins compared with physical vehicle hardware: once the software exists, expanding access does not require manufacturing another vehicle. However, the research available for this event does not establish how many additional customers bought FSD because of the reduction or whether the lower price improved Tesla’s quarterly financial results.
There are several plausible interpretations:
- Lowering the entry barrier: Removing $4,000 from the upfront price made the decision less expensive for an owner already considering the package.
- Testing demand: A price change could help Tesla learn how sensitive customers were to the cost of the software, although no specific test objective was publicly documented here.
- Moving toward recurring revenue: Subscription pricing lets customers pay for access over time instead of committing to a large one-time purchase.
- Reframing the product: The later subscription-only structure emphasizes continuing access to supervised features rather than ownership of a permanent software entitlement.
These are business interpretations, not confirmed explanations from Tesla. The timing is documented; the motive and resulting adoption change are not.

The $8,000 figure was specifically a U.S. price reported in April 2024. It should not be generalized to other countries, where taxes, regulations, currencies, product availability, and subscription terms may differ.
Nor did paying for FSD guarantee that every advertised function would be available to every Tesla. Tesla’s documentation says availability can depend on the vehicle’s configuration, purchased options, self-driving hardware, location, and software version. Before paying for or subscribing to the feature, owners should check the offer displayed for their vehicle and market and read the applicable terms.

Tesla’s April 2024 FSD price cut was real and substantial: the U.S. one-time price fell from $12,000 to $8,000, or by one-third, immediately before the April 23 earnings call. The timing made the move relevant to investors and raised the possibility that Tesla wanted to lower the adoption barrier, but it does not prove a specific motive or sales result.

The more important long-term context is that $8,000 is no longer the current U.S. purchase price. Tesla’s support information, verified August 12, 2026, describes FSD (Supervised) as a $99-per-month subscription and explicitly says the system is not autonomous. Any evaluation of the offer should therefore consider both the recurring cost and the continuing requirement for an attentive driver.
