BMW’s first clear look at the production-bound Neue Klasse 3 Series signaled a major styling reset: a cleaner front end, a wider and more horizontal interpretation of the kidney grille, and a body that returns to the classic long-hood, short-overhang proportions associated with the 3 Series. The car previewed by BMW is the all-electric BMW i3—not the compact hatchback that used the i3 name from 2013 to 2022, but the first electric model variant of the next-generation 3 Series.

What BMW’s teaser actually revealed
At the September 5, 2025 world premiere of the Neue Klasse iX3, BMW showed the next vehicle in the program under camouflage. The company described it as a sporty sedan with classic BMW proportions and identified it as the new BMW i3.

That wording matters. BMW calls the i3 the first all-electric version and first model variant of the new 3 Series generation, with additional variants to follow. It is therefore part of the 3 Series family rather than a separate technology demonstrator. The teaser moved the car beyond the Vision Neue Klasse concept and development prototypes, but it did not initially expose every production surface.
The production reveal also established the i3 as the second production Neue Klasse model, following the iX3. BMW’s broader plan is to extend the program’s design, electronics, software, and efficiency technologies across multiple high-volume segments. BMW has said the rollout could encompass 40 new and updated models by 2027, although individual body styles, powertrains, and regional launch schedules still need to be confirmed separately.
The final exterior design: familiar proportions, new graphics
The production i3 retains the main visual themes introduced by the Vision Neue Klasse concept:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- a long wheelbase;
- short front and rear overhangs;
- a set-back greenhouse;
- pronounced wheel arches;
- a relatively clean body side;
- a low character line; and
- a roof that slopes toward the rear.
Together, those elements give the sedan a broad, athletic stance. The flared arches emphasize the car’s width, while the low side character line keeps the body from looking overly busy. The result is recognizably a BMW sport sedan, even though the surface treatment is less intricate than on some recent models.
A cleaner, integrated BMW face
The front end is the biggest departure from recent BMW styling. Instead of treating the grille, lamps, and sensor hardware as separate visual blocks, BMW integrates them into one broad horizontal graphic. The kidney grille and twin headlights are visually connected with the front sensors, creating a new interpretation of BMW’s traditional four-eye face.
The front also uses a pronounced shark-nose profile. BMW places the roundel above the grille, in a sculpted valley in the bonnet, rather than making it part of the grille assembly. That placement helps the bonnet and nose read as a single sculpted form.

- 5. Accessories and collections: This product is very suitable for static accessories and can be used as an accessory next to a computer. For those who are passionate about collecting model car models, this is a great art collection.
This is a notable change in direction. BMW is moving away from the tall, highly dominant front graphics that defined several recent models and toward a simpler composition. It is not, however, a universal Neue Klasse face. Reporting after the i3’s launch noted that the i3’s grille is broad and horizontal, while the iX3 uses a more vertical treatment. BMW’s design leadership has emphasized that different models should retain distinct characters rather than become the same shape in different sizes.

At the back, the i3 uses wide horizontal taillights with an abstract L-shaped signature. The lamps extend into the rear shoulders, reinforcing the car’s width and preserving a recognizable BMW 3 Series cue without simply repeating the lighting design of the outgoing generation.
The production car is close to the Vision Neue Klasse concept in its principal graphic ideas, but it is not a 1:1 copy. Production-specific changes include softer angles around the windows and roof edge, the removal of the concept’s black recycled-plastic front splitter, and a revised lower intake beneath the license-plate holder. Those changes make the final sedan look more resolved and production-ready than the show car.
Inside: BMW replaces the conventional dashboard script
The design change continues in the cabin through BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system. The interface combines:
- BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects information across the lower windshield area;
- an optional 3D head-up display;
- a driver-oriented central touchscreen; and
- a multifunction steering wheel.
BMW says the arrangement is intended to keep the driver’s hands on the wheel and eyes on the road while reducing the need for a conventional instrument cluster. The central display is angled three degrees toward the driver. The steering wheel has also been redesigned, with its center spoke positioned in the upper section.
BMW describes the interior as an environment organized around driver orientation, light, sound, and digital interaction. That makes the Neue Klasse transformation more than a new fascia: the company is using the next 3 Series generation to change how information and controls are arranged.

The i3’s software architecture is also designed to receive new functions, performance improvements, and AI-supported features after purchase through software updates. BMW says the car uses separate high-performance computers for automated driving and parking, infotainment, and comfort functions, while its Heart of Joy computing system manages driving dynamics.
BMW further reports up to 20 times more computing power than in previous BMW models. That is a BMW claim rather than an independent benchmark, so it should be understood as a description of the company’s architecture—not proof of a specific real-world performance advantage in every function.
BMW i3 powertrain and range claims
BMW announced the launch with the i3 50 xDrive. It uses two electric motors, one driving each axle, for all-wheel drive. BMW quotes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Specification | BMW-announced figure |
|---|---|
| Drive system | Dual electric motors with front- and rear-axle drive |
| Combined output | 469 hp |
| Maximum torque | 645 Nm |
| DC charging architecture | 800 volts, up to 400 kW at a suitable station |
| Added range in 10 minutes | Up to 400 km, according to BMW |
| Maximum claimed range | Up to 900 km under the WLTP test cycle |
These are manufacturer-reported figures and should not be treated as independent test results. The approximately 900-km figure is a WLTP claim, not a U.S. EPA rating. EPA range would normally be lower, and the final result would depend on the market specification, wheels, tires, equipment, software, and certification status.
BMW says the i3 uses its sixth-generation eDrive technology, cylindrical battery cells, and a cell-to-pack battery design. The company has also linked the Neue Klasse battery system to improved packaging and efficiency, but the precise usable battery capacity, charging curve, and market-specific efficiency figures were not established in the launch information.
When will the new BMW i3 be built?
BMW’s Irish launch information says production at Plant Munich is scheduled to begin in August 2026. First customer deliveries in Ireland are expected in autumn 2026. Irish pricing and detailed market specifications were still to follow.

That timing should not be read as a universal delivery date. BMW’s launch schedules, trim availability, pricing, and dealer allocations can vary by country. The U.S. EPA range, U.S. pricing, trim walk, options, and delivery timing were not confirmed in the material available for this reveal.

The design preview and subsequent production presentation do not establish that every future 3 Series will have exactly the same body or powertrain. BMW has said that Neue Klasse advances will spread across different drivetrains, but the details of combustion-powered, plug-in-hybrid, or other 3 Series derivatives require their own confirmation.
Likewise, pre-reveal reporting used the designation G50 for the next-generation 3 Series sedan. That is useful context for enthusiasts, but it should not replace BMW’s official model announcements. It also does not confirm the specifications or styling of every future 3 Series body style.
Still outstanding in many markets are:
- final pricing;
- EPA-certified range figures;
- trim levels and option packages;
- usable battery capacity;
- final charging curves;
- rear-wheel-drive and other drivetrain variants;
- combustion and hybrid derivatives; and
- regional production and delivery allocations.
Why this matters for the 3 Series
The significance of BMW’s teaser is not simply that an electric sedan is joining the lineup. The i3 gives the Neue Klasse program a highly visible 3 Series identity.
BMW is preserving the proportions that make the 3 Series recognizable—long wheelbase, compact overhangs, a low roofline, and a planted stance—while replacing familiar details with a new visual language. The integrated front graphic, horizontal rear lamps, Panoramic iDrive cabin, and software-led architecture are intended to make the next generation feel like a clean break without abandoning the model’s core character.

The production car also demonstrates BMW’s more cautious approach to concept translation. The Vision Neue Klasse preview provided the main themes, but the i3 softens some of the show car’s sharper details and adjusts the lower front treatment for production. In other words, BMW did not simply enlarge or lightly revise the concept; it converted the concept’s identity into a usable 3 Series sedan.
For now, the electric i3 is the clearest expression of that change. It is the first electric model variant of the new 3 Series generation, the second production Neue Klasse vehicle, and the car that turns BMW’s next design era from a concept promise into a recognizable production family.
