Why the event is called the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia
Formula 1’s event listing uses the name “Bahrain Grand Prix” in Malaysia, with Sepang International Circuit as the venue. The official event dates are 2–4 October 2026; FP1 took place on Friday, 2 October. The location matters when interpreting these times: they are Sepang practice results, not laps at Bahrain International Circuit. [Formula 1 event listing]
How the order developed
The lead changed during the hour. Formula 1 reported that Isack Hadjar briefly went fastest before George Russell took the top spot; Verstappen then reclaimed it with his eventual 1:37.520. The closing top three were Verstappen, Russell and Hadjar. [Formula 1 FP1 report]

Many drivers were new to the Malaysian circuit, which last hosted an F1 event in 2017. The session report says Franco Colapinto led the field out at 12:30 local time. At the start, Verstappen, Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad and Colapinto were among the drivers on soft tyres, while most began on mediums; much of the field later switched to softs as teams worked through qualifying simulations. The FIA described conditions as hot and humid and gave Sepang’s length as 5.5 km. Mercedes brought revised sidepod bodywork, an updated floor and diffuser, and rear-suspension modifications. These are useful session details, but neither a single practice classification nor the reported upgrade package establishes comparative qualifying or race pace. [FIA FP1 report]

What the times do—and do not—show
Verstappen’s advantage over Russell was 0.383 seconds, and Russell was 0.400 seconds ahead of Hadjar. The full field spanned 3.300 seconds from first to 22nd. Laps completed also varied: Lindblad recorded 27, the most in the classification, while Stroll completed 19. Those figures describe this session only; practice order is not a prediction of qualifying or Grand Prix results.

The stewards published a separate FP1 decision deleting 11 lap times for cars that failed to use the track at turns 1, 3, 4, 11 and 14. The listed drivers included Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Lance Stroll, Gabriel Bortoleto, George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon. The decision cites Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2(c) of the FIA International Sporting Code and Article B1.8.6 of the FIA F1 Regulations, with deletion recorded under Article 12.4.1(e) of the International Sporting Code.
