AudiWorld and Motor1 published footage and reports in May 2025, months before Audi officially unveiled the production RS 5 Sedan and RS 5 Avant on February 19, 2026. The spy video was development evidence, not an unreleased production-car reveal or a Nürburgring lap-time announcement.
What the Nürburgring spy footage showed
May 2025 reports described camouflaged Audi RS 5 Sedan and Avant prototypes testing at the Nürburgring. AudiWorld credited its video to car spotter Jeroen, while Motor1 also reported sedan and wagon prototypes at the circuit. Motor1 called the sedan a technically five-door liftback, reflecting its rear hatch design rather than a conventional three-box trunk.

The footage established that Audi Sport was developing both body styles for high-performance testing. It did not establish the exact test session, a lap time, final calibration, or whether the prototype had the same specification as the production car later announced by Audi.
What happened to the spy car?
Audi formally announced the production RS 5 Sedan and RS 5 Avant on February 19, 2026. The official name uses a space—RS 5—although “RS5” remains common shorthand in search queries and headlines. The camouflaged Nürburgring cars were therefore development prototypes of a model that has since been revealed, not a separate mystery variant still awaiting confirmation.

Audi later said two RS 5 cars would serve as production vehicles, without additional technical modifications, in the Pirelli Hot Laps program at selected Formula 1 races. That April 30, 2026 announcement documents a later public demonstration role; it does not prove that the 2025 Nürburgring prototypes were unmodified or provide a Nürburgring performance result.
Confirmed RS 5 powertrain
The production RS 5 is Audi Sport’s first high-performance plug-in hybrid. Audi specifies a 2.9-liter V6 biturbo producing 375 kW (510 PS), paired with a 130 kW electric motor. Combined system output is rated at 470 kW (639 PS).

Those figures are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent Nürburgring test results. The earlier spy reports included contemporaneous speculation about engine sound and the likely powertrain; Audi’s later announcement supersedes that speculation with the confirmed plug-in-hybrid configuration.

Audi says the RS 5 uses quattro with Dynamic Torque Control, an electromechanical torque-vectoring system integrated into the rear transaxle. It can direct drive torque to the rear wheel with more grip, particularly in corners. Audi describes this as a world-first in a production model.
The system explains why the Nürburgring was a relevant development venue, but the existence of torque vectoring does not establish a specific lap time, record, or handling advantage against another car without comparable testing.
Is the RS 5 Sedan actually a liftback?
Yes, Motor1 described the sedan prototype as technically a five-door liftback. In everyday use it retains the sedan designation used by Audi, while the large rear hatch gives it a different cargo-opening design from a traditional fixed-deck sedan. The RS 5 Avant is the wagon-bodied alternative.

The stated German launch prices came from Audi’s February 2026 release and are not universal current prices. The Avant’s launch premium over the Sedan was €1,650.

For the German-market RS 5 Sedan, Audi published weighted combined WLTP fuel consumption of 4.3–3.8 l/100 km, electricity consumption of 18.4–17.7 kWh/100 km, and CO₂ emissions of 98–86 g/km. Audi also listed 10.0–9.5 l/100 km with a discharged battery.

These are test-cycle results. Audi notes that equipment and operating conditions affect outcomes, so they are not promises of real-world consumption. A March 24, 2026 New Zealand MY26 specification sheet marked several fuel, emissions, and electric-range values “TBC” and warned that specifications may change. German WLTP numbers should not be presented as confirmed New Zealand figures.
What the Nürburgring reports did—and did not—confirm
- Confirmed by the reports: camouflaged RS 5 Sedan and Avant prototypes were filmed or reported testing at the Nürburgring in May 2025.
- Confirmed later by Audi: the production RS 5 is a 470 kW (639 PS) plug-in hybrid with a 2.9-liter V6 biturbo and electric motor.
- Not established: a Nürburgring lap time, lap record, exact prototype specification, or independent track-performance result.
The most accurate reading of the video is that it captured the RS 5 during development. Audi’s February 2026 launch explains what that program produced; it does not turn the old spy footage into a published track test.
The Bottom Line
The 2025 Nürburgring spy car was an RS 5 development prototype. Audi’s February 2026 production model is a 470 kW (639 PS) plug-in-hybrid Sedan/liftback and Avant, but no verified Nürburgring lap time has been established.
