The Aion UT’s “secret” is twofold: parent company GAC’s long manufacturing relationships with Honda and Toyota, and unusually generous space for a short hatchback. In MotorTrend’s October 1, 2026 first drive, the reviewer found a practical, well-equipped small EV—not proof that the UT matches Honda or Toyota for quality, and not a sporty alternative to every rival.
What is the Aion UT’s secret?
MotorTrend’s Angus MacKenzie points to GAC’s joint-venture manufacturing history and the UT’s packaging. The October 1, 2026 article reports that GAC had built 11 million vehicles for Honda since 1998 and 10 million for Toyota since 2006. That history distinguishes the company from newer Chinese marques, but it does not establish that the Aion UT has independently measured quality parity with either automaker.
The more immediately tangible advantage is space. At 168.1 inches long, the UT has a 108.3-inch wheelbase. MotorTrend reports 15.5 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats up and 56.5 cubic feet with them folded. MacKenzie says six-foot adults can sit comfortably behind other six-foot adults, an observation from the first drive rather than a standardized cabin-space comparison.
What kind of car is it?
The UT is a five-passenger, four-door hatchback with a front-mounted motor and front-wheel drive. It uses a 60-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. MotorTrend reports a 268-mile WLTP-rated range. The article suggests roughly 235 miles under the tougher EPA test, but its specification table lists EPA range as unavailable; 235 miles is therefore the writer’s estimate, not an official EPA rating.

MotorTrend estimates 0–60 mph in 7.1 seconds. Its account is inconsistent about motor output: the article body gives 201 hp, while its specification box lists 210 hp; both give 155 lb-ft of torque. It is better to treat the power figure as unresolved than to present either number as definitive.
How does the Aion UT drive?
The first-drive reviewer describes brisk electric response and a solid-feeling build, with no body or interior rattles or squeaks noticed during the drive. Those are one journalist’s impressions, not a durability test. The suspension is firm, with compression damping the reviewer found slightly overdone. Chaoyang tire noise was noticeable on coarse pavement, and hard acceleration out of corners produced some torque steer.

MotorTrend sees the UT as a practical family runabout rather than a driver’s car. The article says the Renault 5 and Hyundai Inster offer more charm or fun-to-drive appeal, while the Aion’s case rests more on space, equipment, affordability and urban usefulness. It does not provide a full head-to-head test, charging-speed comparison or measured real-world range comparison.
What equipment and technology does it offer?
MotorTrend reports heated power front seats, a heated steering wheel, automatic headlights, 17-inch wheels, voice control, online navigation and music streaming as standard equipment. Listed driver-assistance functions include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking and lane-departure prevention.

The cabin uses GAC’s ADiGO operating system, a Qualcomm Snapdragon SA8155P processor, an 8.8-inch driver display and a 14.6-inch center touchscreen. The reviewer notes that some drive and driver-assistance settings require navigating touchscreen menus, which can make adjustment less direct.
MotorTrend describes a $1,600 Premium pack with a panoramic glass roof and electric blind, heated and ventilated front seats, a power tailgate and wireless phone charging. That package and price are reported in the article’s context; confirm local-market availability before treating them as an option where you live.

What does MotorTrend report about the battery and heat pump?
According to MotorTrend, the battery was developed with CATL and uses GAC’s Magazine Battery 2.0 design, which the article describes as having insulated cell compartments and active rapid cooling. The story relays GAC’s claim that the cooling system can increase heat dissipation by 30 percent and that the battery passed impact and nail-penetration tests without fire or thermal runaway. These are company claims reported by the outlet, not independently verified results established by the first drive.
The article also relays GAC’s claim that its four-stage heat pump works down to −22°F and has about half the parts and 52 percent of the mass of a conventional unit. Those specifications, too, should be understood as claims reported by MotorTrend rather than independent test findings.

Is the Aion UT on sale, and what might it cost?
In the U.S. context of MotorTrend’s October 1, 2026 article, the specification table says the UT is not on sale. The article estimates a price of about $30,000; that is an estimate, not a confirmed U.S. retail price. Sales status, pricing, range figures, trims and warranty terms can vary by market and change over time.
For the UK, MotorTrend reports eight years or 100,000 miles of vehicle coverage, eight years or 125,000 miles for the battery, and eight years of free maintenance. Those are UK-specific terms as described in the article and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
Who should pay attention to the Aion UT?
The UT’s strongest reported case is for a buyer who values passenger and cargo room, practical equipment and compact exterior dimensions more than sporty handling. GAC’s Honda and Toyota manufacturing history is relevant context, not a substitute for evidence about the UT’s own long-term reliability. Buyers comparing it with other compact EVs will also need market-specific information on availability, charging, usable range, price, equipment and warranty terms; the first-drive article does not settle those comparisons.
