Breathe Easier This Winter: 7 Ways to Improve Your Home’s Indoor Air

A practical winter checklist for cleaner indoor air: reduce pollution at its source, ventilate wisely, manage humidity, maintain filters, and stay alert to CO hazards.

To improve your home’s indoor air in winter, reduce pollution at its source, exhaust cooking fumes and moisture outdoors, ventilate when outdoor conditions are suitable, maintain filters, control humidity, and use air cleaners only as a supplement. Also keep combustion appliances and alarms ready for heating season. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says people spend 90 percent of their time indoors on average, making everyday indoor conditions worth attention.

1. Reduce pollution where it starts

Source control is often the most effective first step: prevent pollutants from entering the air or reduce what is emitted. As the EPA puts it, “Usually the most effective way to improve indoor air quality is to eliminate individual sources of pollution or to reduce their emissions.” (EPA: Improving Indoor Air Quality)

  • Do not smoke indoors.
  • Use products and activities that emit pollutants sparingly, especially in rooms with limited ventilation.
  • Keep household chemicals tightly sealed and stored as directed.
  • Maintain fuel-burning appliances so they operate and vent as intended.

These actions address emissions themselves rather than relying on a fan or filter to deal with them afterward. The EPA’s Care for Your Air guide and indoor-air guidance discuss source control as a core strategy.

2. Exhaust cooking fumes and shower moisture

Use a kitchen range hood or bathroom exhaust fan that vents outdoors when cooking or showering. These fans remove pollutants and moisture near where they are produced. A fan that merely recirculates air does not provide the same outdoor exhaust. Keep exhaust equipment maintained and follow its operating instructions. (EPA: Care for Your Air; EPA: Biological Contaminants and Indoor Air Quality)

3. Ventilate when outdoor conditions allow

Outdoor air can dilute indoor pollutants, but opening windows is not automatically the right choice in winter. Consider outdoor air pollution, extreme cold, and other unsafe weather before bringing air inside. When conditions are suitable, brief window opening can provide ventilation; use exhaust fans during moisture- or pollutant-producing activities regardless of whether you keep other windows closed, if the fans vent outdoors.

Do not assume that a forced-air heating system supplies fresh outdoor air: many such systems simply recirculate indoor air. Ventilation needs vary by home. EPA cites ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2016’s recommendation of 0.35 air changes per hour, but not less than 15 cubic feet per minute per person. That figure is a recommendation reported by EPA, not a current legal requirement or a simple universal measurement for every household. 4. Maintain the heating-system filter

Check the filter in your furnace or central HVAC system and follow the cleaning or replacement schedule specified by the filter and equipment manufacturers. A clean, correctly fitted filter supports the system’s intended operation. Before installing a higher-efficiency filter, verify that it is compatible with your equipment; a filter choice should not be made on efficiency rating alone.

A central filter serves the area covered by that system and can capture some airborne particles, but it cannot remove every indoor pollutant. The EPA explains the limits and considerations for home air cleaners and air filters.

5. Keep humidity in a healthy range and address moisture

The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A small indoor hygrometer can help you see whether humidity is persistently high or low. (EPA: What Can I Do to Improve Indoor Air Quality in My Home?)

  • Repair plumbing or roof leaks and dry wet materials promptly.
  • Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans to remove moisture at its source.
  • Pay attention to recurring window condensation; it can signal excess moisture that needs addressing.
  • Use a humidifier or dehumidifier only as needed, and do not treat it as a substitute for fixing leaks or other moisture sources.

Persistent dampness can support biological contaminants. The EPA’s Care for Your Air guide includes moisture management among practical indoor-air steps.

6. Add a room air cleaner when it fits the problem

A portable air cleaner is designed for a room or area; a central HVAC filter treats air circulating through the system’s coverage. Either can reduce some indoor pollution, but neither removes all pollutants, and neither replaces source control or ventilation. Choose based on the area you want to address and the pollutant you are trying to reduce, then maintain the unit and replace filters as directed.

For gases, ordinary particle filters are not enough: the EPA’s air-cleaner guide says to choose activated carbon or another filter designed for gas removal. (EPA: Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home; EPA: Air Cleaners and Air Filters in the Home)

7. Prepare for winter combustion hazards

Heating season makes combustion safety essential. Test smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms monthly, maintain batteries as directed, and replace alarms when they reach the end of their service life. Follow alarm manufacturers’ instructions and applicable local requirements.

  • Keep exterior furnace, stove, fireplace, radon, and dryer vents clear of snow and ice.
  • Never operate a fuel-powered generator indoors, in a garage, or in another enclosed area. EPA says portable generators should be outdoors and at least 20 feet from buildings.
  • If a CO alarm sounds, get to fresh air promptly.

See the EPA’s winter weather and indoor air quality guidance for seasonal precautions.

Which approach should you use?

Source control, ventilation, and filtration solve different parts of the problem. Use the approach that matches the source and conditions rather than expecting one device or habit to handle everything.

Approach What it does Best use Limit
Source control Prevents or reduces pollutant emissions Smoke, product emissions, chemical storage, and appliance maintenance Does not remove pollutants already present in the air
Ventilation Exhausts pollutants or dilutes them with outdoor air Cooking, showering, and times when outdoor air and weather are suitable Outdoor pollution, extreme cold, or unsafe weather can make opening windows a poor choice
Filtration or air cleaning Captures some airborne particles; suitable media can target some gases Supplementing other measures in the area served by a room unit or central system Coverage is limited, and no filter removes every pollutant

EPA’s overall advice is to combine source control and appropriate ventilation with air cleaning or filtration when useful, while also managing moisture. For more on household actions, see EPA’s home indoor-air steps.
