The clearest distinction in their published specifications is that Toyota offers a Highlander Hybrid, while Kia’s 2024 Telluride uses a 3.8-liter V6. Which one fits better depends on the specific trim and drivetrain, how many people and how much cargo you carry, towing needs, and the price and condition of the vehicle you are considering.
At a glance: what the published figures show
| Specification | 2025 Toyota Highlander | 2024 Kia Telluride |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | Gas models use a 2.4-liter turbo engine rated at 265 hp and 310 lb-ft. A hybrid is also offered. Toyota, 2025 model-year specifications. | 3.8-liter V6 rated at 262 lb-ft. Kia, 2024 model-year specifications; the cited figure set does not state horsepower. |
| Published fuel economy | Gas LE, XLE, and Limited FWD: 22 mpg city / 29 highway. Hybrid XLE: 35 / 35 mpg. Other gas configurations listed at 21 / 28 mpg. Toyota, 2025 model-year estimates. | FWD: 20 mpg city / 26 highway, 22 combined. AWD: 18 / 24, 20 combined. Kia, 2024 model-year estimates. |
| Seating | Advertised for up to eight; seating configuration and availability depend on the vehicle. | Seven or eight, depending on trim. |
| Published cargo volume | Up to 84.3 cu. ft. with the second and third rows folded; Toyota specifies this as a maximum. | 21 cu. ft. behind the third row; 46 behind the second; 87 behind the first, per Kia. |
| Published towing capacity | Up to 5,000 lb for relevant configurations; confirm the exact vehicle’s rating and equipment. | Up to 5,000 lb on many configurations; 5,500 lb on select AWD trims, per Kia. Confirm the exact vehicle’s rating and equipment. |
These are manufacturer-published figures, not results from a controlled comparison test. Cargo figures use different seat positions, and maximum ratings do not apply automatically to every trim or drivetrain. Toyota’s 2025 lineup and specifications are listed at Toyota’s 2025 Highlander lineup page and Toyota’s 2025 features and specifications page. Kia’s figures are on its 2024 Telluride specifications page.
Which one gets better gas mileage?
The Highlander Hybrid XLE has the strongest listed fuel-economy figures in this comparison: Toyota estimates 35 mpg city and 35 mpg highway for that 2025 configuration. Among the listed gas models, the 2025 Highlander LE, XLE, and Limited with FWD are estimated at 22 city / 29 highway; Toyota lists 21 / 28 for selected other gas configurations.
Kia estimates the 2024 Telluride at 20 city / 26 highway mpg with FWD and 18 / 24 with AWD. Its listed combined estimates are 22 mpg FWD and 20 mpg AWD. These figures compare different model years and configurations, so check the drivetrain and trim on the actual Highlander or Telluride rather than treating one rating as universal.

The practical choice is straightforward: if a hybrid is central to your decision, compare an actual Highlander Hybrid listing with the Telluride you would buy. Do not apply the hybrid rating to a gas Highlander. The manufacturer estimates are not a promise of real-world fuel use.
How do their engines and towing ratings compare?
Toyota lists the 2025 gas Highlander’s 2.4-liter turbo engine at 265 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Kia lists a 3.8-liter V6 and 262 lb-ft of torque for the 2024 Telluride; the cited Kia specifications do not state its horsepower. Those specifications alone do not establish which SUV feels quicker, quieter, or better to drive.

Both brands publish towing capacity up to 5,000 lb for relevant configurations. Kia lists 5,500 lb for select AWD Telluride trims, while Toyota’s Highlander figure is an up-to maximum. Match the exact trim, drivetrain, and factory equipment to the rating for the vehicle you plan to tow with; do not assume the headline maximum applies to every example.
How many people do they seat, and what about cargo?
Toyota advertises the Highlander for up to eight passengers, while Kia lists seven- or eight-passenger seating on the Telluride depending on trim. Before choosing based on capacity, verify whether the specific vehicle has a second-row bench or captain’s chairs and confirm the passenger count. The seating layout affects both the number of people it can carry and how passengers reach the third row.

Kia provides cargo volumes at three seat positions: 21 cu. ft. behind the third row, 46 behind the second, and 87 behind the first. Toyota’s cited maximum is 84.3 cu. ft. with both the second and third rows folded. Because the Toyota and Kia figures describe different configurations, they do not establish which one holds more luggage when all three rows are in use.
For a meaningful fit check, bring the people, car seats, stroller, or other bulky items you routinely carry. Try the third-row access and test the cargo area with the number of seats you need raised; a single maximum-volume figure cannot answer those questions.

What do the original prices tell you—and what don’t they?
Toyota’s historical 2025 base MSRPs were $40,320 for the Highlander LE, $43,470 for XLE, and $47,575 for Limited. Kia America announced a $36,190 MSRP for the 2024 Telluride LX FWD, excluding its $1,395 destination charge. These are original model-year figures for different trims, not matched price quotes.
They are not current transaction prices or used-car valuations. To judge value, compare listings in the same market and account for year, trim, drivetrain, mileage, condition, equipment, and asking price. The original prices cannot establish which vehicle is the better buy today. Kia’s original announcement is available at Kia America’s 2024 Telluride pricing announcement.

How should safety features affect the decision?
Toyota identifies Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ on the 2025 Highlander, including pre-collision pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, road-sign assist, and lane-tracing assist. Toyota notes that feature availability can vary by trim. This comparison does not establish an equivalent feature-by-feature list or matched independent crash-test ratings for both exact model years, so it cannot support a safety winner.
Check the equipment on the specific vehicle, especially if you are comparing used examples or different trims. A model-level feature description is not a substitute for confirming what is fitted to an individual SUV.
Quick Recap
Which one should you choose?
- Consider the Highlander Hybrid if a hybrid powertrain and Toyota’s published 35/35 mpg city/highway estimate for the 2025 Hybrid XLE are priorities. Verify that the listing is actually for a hybrid and check its trim and condition.
- Consider a Telluride if its V6 and Kia’s row-specific cargo figures are useful to your needs. Confirm whether the trim seats seven or eight and whether it is FWD or AWD.
- For towing, use the rating for the exact vehicle and its equipment—not the maximum headline figure. Select AWD Telluride trims are listed at up to 5,500 lb; both manufacturers also publish up to 5,000 lb for relevant configurations.
- For passenger and cargo fit, inspect the actual seating layout, third-row access, car-seat fit, and luggage space with all the seats you need in place.
- For price, compare current local listings with similar trim, drivetrain, mileage, condition, and equipment. The model years differ, and historical MSRP does not settle today’s value.
