A motorist following the truck pulled the survivor from the burning vehicle. Police Chief Jeremy Bowers said speed was likely a contributing factor, but the cause of the collision was not known when KTVU reported the crash.
What happened in the Piedmont Cybertruck crash?
The crash occurred at Hampton Road and King Avenue. Piedmont police were first notified at 3:08 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. KTVU reported that the truck was wedged between a tree and a retaining wall and fully engulfed in flames when responders arrived.

A motorist who had been following the Cybertruck pulled one occupant from the burning vehicle. That person was taken to a hospital with severe injuries. Fire crews could not extinguish the flames with handheld extinguishers because the heat was too intense, according to the police chief.
How many people died, and who were they?
Three occupants died and one survived with severe injuries. KTVU reported, citing two sources, that all four were members of Piedmont High School’s class of 2023. Their names had not been released in the report, out of respect for their families.

What caused the crash and fire?
The cause of the collision had not been determined when KTVU published its report. Chief Jeremy Bowers said speed was likely one contributing factor, but did not describe it as a final finding. He told KTVU: “We don’t know the cause of the collision and during the holiday season, our hearts go out to the families that are going to have to deal with this tragedy.”
The available reporting also does not establish why the fire became so intense. The truck’s condition at the scene and the difficulty firefighters had containing the flames are reported observations, not a technical explanation of ignition or fire behavior. The reports do not establish a battery-related cause or a broader vehicle defect.
