The 2024 Mazda3 hatchback is worth a look if you want a compact car with an upscale-feeling cabin and engaging handling. Its biggest everyday compromises are poor rear visibility and a snug back seat, so it is not a near-perfect fit for every household. The right choice depends on which engine, drivetrain and transmission you want—and whether the hatchback’s space works for your passengers and cargo.
What the 2024 Mazda3 hatchback gets right—and where it falls short
Independent reviews point to a distinctive cabin and athletic handling as strengths. Car and Driver describes the handling as nimble while the ride remains compliant; Cars.com likewise characterizes it as athletic, with an upscale-feeling interior. Those are publication assessments, not a guarantee that every driver will prefer its ride or steering feel.
The most consequential drawback is the view out. Car and Driver calls rear visibility the hatchback’s worst trait among compact hatchbacks, and Cars.com also flags the limited rear view. The shape that gives the car its distinctive profile makes it especially important to check the sightlines and try the parking camera for yourself.
Cars.com describes the rear seat as snug for adults. Edmunds lists 20.1 cubic feet of cargo capacity for the configuration on its specifications page; that figure is configuration-specific, and the number alone does not show how easily bulky items fit through the hatch.

Choose an engine and drivetrain before comparing trim names
Mazda’s 2024 US lineup paired a naturally aspirated engine with front-wheel drive on several trims, while other versions added all-wheel drive. The turbo models combine the more powerful engine with AWD and a six-speed automatic. The six-speed manual was available only on the FWD 2.5 S Premium hatchback.

Standard 2.5-liter: the everyday choice
Mazda lists the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter at 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. It is the choice for shoppers who do not need the turbo’s added output. Edmunds lists 27 mpg city and 35 mpg highway for the configuration shown on its specs page; that page’s figure should not be generalized across every trim or drivetrain without checking the exact version.
Turbo: more output, fewer configuration choices
Mazda rates the 2.5 Turbo at 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when using 93-octane premium fuel. Mazda pairs it with AWD and a six-speed automatic in the 2024 hatchback range. The extra output comes with a premium-fuel requirement for the quoted rating and a higher original trim position.

Manual: limited to one hatchback version
If a manual transmission is essential, look specifically for the FWD 2.5 S Premium hatchback. Do not assume the manual is offered on AWD or turbo models; it is not among the combinations Mazda listed for this range.
What the trims add
- 2.5 S Select Sport: Mazda’s announcement lists keyless entry, dual-zone climate control and 18-inch black wheels among its added equipment over the base equipment.
- 2.5 S Preferred: Adds a moonroof, heated front seats and power driver-seat adjustments.
- 2.5 S Carbon Edition: Brings standard AWD, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charging.
- 2.5 S Premium: Hatchback-exclusive, with the six-speed manual available on the FWD version.
- 2.5 Carbon Turbo and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: Add the turbo engine and standard AWD. Mazda describes the Turbo Premium Plus as including additional driver-assistance and camera equipment.
Equipment can depend on the exact vehicle and configuration. Use its window sticker rather than relying on a trim name alone.

Safety ratings and what they do—and do not—tell you
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety names the 2024 Mazda3 hatchback a Top Safety Pick+. Its page shows Good results in the evaluations listed for the vehicle, but the test scope matters: IIHS notes that some side ratings come from a Mazda-conducted 2023 test, while other ratings apply across stated model years. Review the individual tests and applicability notes on the IIHS 2024 Mazda3 hatchback rating page rather than treating the award as a result from one identical test of every 2024 car.
What to check on a test drive
- Assess the rear view. From your normal driving position, check the view through the rear window and mirrors. Try reversing and parking with the camera, and see whether the visibility aids on that specific car help you feel comfortable.
- Test the rear seat with your real seating position. Sit behind the driver after setting the front seat where you would actually use it. If adults regularly ride in back, have them try it too.
- Bring representative cargo. Check whether your stroller, sports gear, groceries or luggage fit through the opening and sit usefully in the cargo area.
- Drive the powertrain you plan to buy. Compare the standard 2.5-liter with the turbo if both are available, and decide whether the turbo’s additional output merits its cost and 93-octane fuel for the quoted power rating.
- Try the exact transmission and drivetrain. Drive the manual if you are considering the FWD 2.5 S Premium. Compare FWD and AWD against your local weather and traction needs, bearing in mind that Mazda’s trim lineup limits which combinations are available.
How to compare it with compact-car alternatives
When cross-shopping a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, compare the same body style and a similar equipment level where possible. Pay attention to handling and ride, cabin materials, rear-seat space, cargo shape as well as volume, rear visibility, fuel economy for the exact powertrain, AWD availability, transmission choice, safety equipment and price. Cars.com places the Mazda3 in the broader compact-car context, but the sources cited here do not provide a matched, same-day head-to-head test that establishes a class winner.
