That is not a guaranteed saving on equivalent equipment or an out-the-door quote. The Impreza makes the stronger case if you want a lower-priced hatchback and do not need the Crosstrek’s extra ground clearance or towing capability; the Crosstrek may justify its premium for rougher roads or a trailer.
What does the $2,400 difference actually compare?
Subaru of America’s 2026 pricing announcements list the 2027 Impreza at $24,595 and the 2027 Crosstrek at $26,995. Subtracting those entry MSRPs gives a $2,400 gap. It is arithmetic on two advertised starting prices, not a manufacturer-promised saving or a comparison of identically equipped trims.
The figures are U.S. starting MSRPs. They do not establish what either car will cost at a dealership: destination, taxes, dealer fees, options, incentives, and local pricing can change the total. Subaru’s 2027 Impreza announcement also says its starting price is $2,000 below the 2026 Impreza entry price. The 2026 comparison page lists the 2026 Impreza at $26,595 and Crosstrek at $26,995; those prior-year prices should not be mixed into the 2027 comparison.
What is confirmed about the 2027 models?
2027 Subaru Impreza
Subaru lists a $24,595 starting price and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Its 2027 page describes a hatchback with an 11.6-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Subaru of America’s September 24, 2026 pricing announcement says the lineup has base and RS trims, with a 2.5-liter BOXER engine standard across the lineup, and that the cars were expected to arrive at retailers in late 2026. The announcement’s timing is an expectation, not confirmation of availability at every dealer.

2027 Subaru Crosstrek
Subaru’s July 9, 2026 pricing announcement sets the Crosstrek’s starting MSRP at $26,995, unchanged from the prior model year. Subaru of America President and COO Jeff Walters said the unchanged price was intended to reinforce the company’s commitment to value. The available announcement establishes the price, but does not provide a complete 2027 trim-by-trim feature or specification comparison.
Where the Crosstrek’s premium can pay off
Ground clearance and rougher roads
Subaru’s detailed comparison is for model year 2026, not 2027. In that comparison, the Impreza has 5.1 inches of ground clearance, the regular Crosstrek 8.7 inches, and the Crosstrek Wilderness 9.3 inches. Those prior-year figures illustrate the practical distinction: the higher-riding Crosstrek is better suited to roads with deeper ruts, uneven surfaces, or obstacles that make underbody clearance a concern. They should not be treated as verified 2027 specifications.

Towing
For 2026, Subaru lists a 1,500-pound towing capacity for the Crosstrek and 3,500 pounds for the Crosstrek Wilderness; it describes the Impreza as not designed for towing. Those are prior-year manufacturer figures. Anyone choosing a 2027 model for a particular trailer should confirm the final rating and applicable equipment for the exact trim before buying.
Does the less expensive Impreza give up useful space?
Not necessarily. Subaru’s 2026 comparison lists maximum cargo volume of up to 56 cubic feet for the Impreza and up to 54.7 cubic feet for the Crosstrek. Both are listed with seating for up to five and up to 100.5 cubic feet of passenger volume. These figures are model-year 2026 specifications, not confirmed 2027 measurements, but they show why the Impreza’s hatchback layout can remain practical for everyday cargo even though it costs less.

How to decide which one fits your use
- Compare the actual trims you would buy. The $2,400 gap compares starting MSRPs, not equivalent equipment. Check the price and included features for the specific 2027 Impreza and Crosstrek trims at your dealer.
- Consider your regular roads. If you mostly drive paved streets and do not need extra clearance, the Impreza’s lower entry price and hatchback format may be the better fit. If rougher roads are a routine part of your driving, the Crosstrek’s higher stance may matter more than the entry-price difference.

Is the 2027 Impreza the smarter buy?
For a buyer who wants an all-wheel-drive hatchback, does not need extra ground clearance, and is not shopping for towing capability, the Impreza is the more economical starting point: Subaru lists it $2,400 below the Crosstrek. That does not make it universally better. The Crosstrek is the more defensible choice when its higher-riding format and capability suit the roads or work you actually face.
