The 2018 Challenger SRT Demon and Hellcat share a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8, but the Demon’s higher output came from a broader set of engine and launch-system changes—not boost alone. Dodge rated the Demon at 808 hp and 717 lb-ft on premium 91-octane fuel. Its optional maximum-output setup raised those figures to 840 hp and 770 lb-ft with the available Direct Connection engine controller and 100-plus-octane unleaded fuel. For comparison, the 2018 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody was rated at 707 hp and 650 lb-ft.
2018 Demon and Hellcat powertrain specifications
This comparison uses the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon and the 2018 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody. Dodge’s published figures are factory specifications, not results from an independent side-by-side test. The Demon’s two output ratings reflect different fuel and controller configurations.

Dodge published the Demon specifications in its April 11, 2017 launch release and clarified its output configurations in a May 11, 2017 pricing announcement. The Hellcat figures and transmission choices refer specifically to the Widebody, as listed in Dodge’s July 26, 2017 announcement.
Why the Demon made more power
A larger supercharger and more boost
The Demon’s 2.7-liter supercharger is larger than the Hellcat Widebody’s 2.4-liter unit, and Dodge listed its boost at 14.5 psi compared with 11.6 psi. The Demon also had a 6,500-rpm limit rather than 6,200 rpm. Those are three measurable differences, but they do not describe the full engine revision.

Fuel delivery and internal components
Dodge specified two dual-stage fuel pumps for the Demon, compared with one pump in the Hellcat Widebody. Its launch material also identifies changes to pistons, connecting rods, valvetrain and lubrication, and describes 25 major component upgrades. Stellantis separately reported that 62% of the Demon V-8’s bill of materials was new compared with the Hellcat V-8. That percentage describes bill-of-material content; it does not mean 62% of the engine’s mass or dimensions changed. Stellantis’ June 8, 2017 engineering account provides additional development context.
The Demon’s 840-hp configuration had specific requirements
The standard published Demon rating was 808 hp and 717 lb-ft on premium 91-octane fuel. The higher 840-hp, 770-lb-ft rating required both the available Direct Connection engine controller and 100-plus-octane unleaded fuel. It is therefore inaccurate to present 840 hp as the Demon’s unconditional standard output or to compare that figure with the Hellcat without naming the configuration.

Transmission and launch systems
Automatic-only Demon
The 2018 Demon came only with the TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic. Dodge paired it with a TransBrake, which holds the transmission’s output shaft so engine rpm can rise before the car is released.
Hellcat Widebody transmission choices
The 2018 Hellcat Widebody could be ordered with either a Tremec six-speed manual or a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic. The Demon’s TransBrake and Torque Reserve were part of its purpose-built drag-launch package, not a feature set shared by the Hellcat Widebody.

What Torque Reserve does
Dodge described Torque Reserve as increasing engine airflow and supercharger speed before launch. Together with the TransBrake, it was designed to help the Demon build launch response while stationary; it is distinct from simply quoting peak horsepower.
Keep the 2018 Demon separate from the Demon 170
These figures apply to the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon, not the later Demon 170. Dodge’s 2023 Demon 170 page specifies a 3.0-liter supercharger, while the 2018 Demon launch material identifies a 2.7-liter unit. The two models’ specifications should not be combined.

What the published comparison establishes
Dodge’s 2017 materials also stated that the 2018 Demon achieved a 9.65-second quarter-mile at 140 mph, attributing the figure to NHRA certification. That is a manufacturer-reported performance claim, not an independent comparison test. On powertrain specifications, the clearest distinction is that the Demon combined a larger supercharger and higher boost with revised engine hardware, greater fuel-pump capacity, a higher rpm limit, and dedicated launch systems.
