General Motors has said it intends to bring plug-in hybrids back to selected North American vehicles, and CEO Mary Barra was reported to have said the company would have them for North America by 2027. But GM has not confirmed a 2027 launch, named a model, or published specifications in the sources available as of October 2026. Treat 2027 as a reported plan—not a confirmed arrival date.
What GM has said about plug-in hybrids
In January 2024, GM said it would return plug-in hybrid technology to selected North American vehicles. Barra said the technology was already being produced in other markets, which could make its return more efficient. She described the approach as a way to deliver some EV benefits while charging infrastructure continues to develop: “But in the interim, deploying plug-in technology in strategic segments will deliver some of the environmental benefits of EVs as the nation continues to build its charging infrastructure.” (Associated Press, Jan. 30, 2024.)
Reuters later reported that Barra had said by late 2024 that GM would have plug-in hybrids for North America by 2027. That is evidence of an earlier company plan, not a current product announcement. In September 2026, Reuters reported that supplier sources and forecasting firms expected no GM hybrid vehicle to go on sale in the U.S. until near the end of the decade; a GM spokesman declined to comment. That reporting does not establish that GM canceled its plan, but it makes the 2027 timing uncertain. (Reuters, Sept. 2026.)
Are any GM plug-in hybrid models confirmed?
No model is confirmed in the sources available. GM has not identified which vehicles or segments will receive plug-in hybrid powertrains, or whether the plan applies to the United States, Canada, or both in any particular model year.

A TipRanks article relays AutoForecast Solutions projections suggesting possible coverage from the Chevrolet Equinox to the Silverado. The same article attributes a roughly 70-mile electric-range forecast to the firm. Those are third-party projections, not GM product details, and should not be treated as specifications or a final model list. (TipRanks.)
What GM’s current powertrain announcements do—and don’t—show
GM’s September 2026 powertrain commentary describes a flexible vehicle portfolio shaped by regulation, trade policy, evolving technology, and customer demand. President Mark Reuss also calls EVs the industry’s “end game.” The specific announcement focuses on gasoline and diesel powertrains for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra; it does not announce a plug-in hybrid. GM’s Oct. 1, 2026 sales release likewise discusses its existing lineup and upcoming pickups without confirming a PHEV. The company reported 670,974 vehicles sold in Q3 2026, down 6%, attributing the decline to a much smaller EV market and discontinued vehicles. That is sales context, not evidence of a plug-in hybrid launch. (GM Q3 2026 sales release.)

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can be charged from an external power source and drive on battery power for a limited distance before its combustion engine and electric system provide propulsion. It is different from a conventional hybrid, which does not plug in for charging. The AP’s description of GM’s plan frames the plug-in system as electric driving over a relatively short distance before gas-electric propulsion takes over. (Associated Press.)

Until GM publishes vehicle details, a projected model or range is not enough to determine whether a future PHEV will suit a particular commute, charging setup, or budget. Once GM makes a formal announcement, the useful comparisons will be confirmed launch timing, vehicle segment and size, official electric-only range, charging requirements, combined fuel economy, and market availability.
