How many GM workers were affected?
On October 29, 2025, GM confirmed workforce reductions at manufacturing sites in Michigan and Ohio as it realigned electric-vehicle capacity. The Associated Press reported about 1,200 jobs at the Detroit-area all-electric assembly plant and 550 workers at the Ultium Cells battery-cell plant in Ohio. Those components explain the 1,750 figure cited in coverage; a U.S. Senate committee letter later cited a New York Times headline describing 1,750 cuts in GM’s electric-vehicle business. The Associated Press characterized the overall event as about 1,700 layoffs. It also relayed Detroit News reports of 850 temporary layoffs in Ohio and 700 in Tennessee. Those temporary figures are separate from the reported 1,200 and 550 cuts; the available account does not establish a single reconciled total of unique workers across all categories.
Which facilities were involved?
Detroit: EV assembly
The Detroit-area site in the reported cuts is Factory ZERO, an electric-vehicle assembly plant—not a battery factory. GM describes Factory ZERO as its first fully dedicated EV assembly plant. GM facility directory.

Ohio: battery cells
The 550 figure refers to workers at Ultium Cells’ battery-cell plant in Warren, Ohio. GM said cell production there would pause beginning in January 2026 for upgrades, with operations anticipated to resume by mid-2026. That was a forecast made in October 2025; the sources available here do not confirm whether production restarted on schedule. Associated Press report.
Tennessee: a separately reported temporary layoff
The 700 temporary layoffs reported in Tennessee should not be folded into the 1,750 figure. GM’s October 2025 statement said production at the Spring Hill battery-cell facility would pause beginning in January 2026 for upgrades, with a mid-2026 resumption anticipated. GM’s facility directory also lists Brownstown Battery in Michigan, a separate facility that assembles electric drive units and battery packs for specified GM vehicles. It is not the Detroit EV assembly plant or the Ohio cell plant described in the reported cuts. GM facility directory.
Why did GM say it was cutting or pausing work?
GM attributed its capacity changes to slower near-term EV adoption and an evolving regulatory environment. The company said it was “realigning EV capacity” and that Ultium Cells was “adjusting production in response to recent changes in customer plant demand.” These are the company’s stated reasons, not independently established or necessarily exclusive causes. Are the battery-plant layoffs temporary?
The reported job cuts, temporary layoffs, and production pauses are distinct events. The October 2025 account labels the Ohio and Tennessee layoffs as temporary and describes planned production pauses and upgrades; it does not establish the final employment outcome for every affected worker. It also does not confirm whether the plants resumed production on the anticipated schedule.
GM said affected employees “may be eligible to continue receiving a significant portion of their regular wages or salary, plus benefits.” The conditional statement does not specify an individual worker’s eligibility, the amount of pay, or how long support would last. A worker’s circumstances need to be confirmed through current employer, union, or government records. Associated Press report.

What does GM’s later Spring Hill plan mean?
On September 29, 2026, GM announced plans for Ultium Cells to produce lithium manganese rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells at Spring Hill, Tennessee. The company said construction and facility upgrades would begin later in 2026 and were expected to finish in 2028. GM projected 500 additional jobs alongside a current workforce of 1,200. These are company projections for a future expansion—not jobs already created, confirmation that a prior pause ended, or a promise to recall workers affected by earlier layoffs.
