The best-documented story behind the 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti is that of chassis 0674—a Ferrari factory racer that began the year as a 315 S, finished second in the Mille Miglia, and retired from Le Mans after Mike Hawthorn set a record lap. Its later history ran through Luigi Chinetti and Pierre Bardinon, and it sold at auction in 2016 for a reported €32.1 million.
Chassis 0674 began life as a Ferrari 315 S
Ferrari 335 S chassis 0674 was not originally built in 335 S form. According to Artcurial’s 2016 sale record, it left Ferrari at the start of 1957 as a 315 S, with Scaglietti barchetta bodywork and a four-cam, 3.8-litre Tipo 140 V12. After the Mille Miglia, Ferrari enlarged its engine before entering it at Le Mans as a 335 S.
The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) gives the later engine capacity as 4,023 cm³; Artcurial rounds it to 4,100 cc. “About 4.0 litres” is the clearest way to describe it without implying greater precision than the sources agree on. The specialist guide Car Collector International lists a Tipo 141 V12 of 4,023.32 cc for the 335 S model. These are published specifications, not results from a modern test of this car.
How chassis 0674 raced in 1957
Sebring: sixth in its original specification
On 23 March 1957, Peter Collins and Maurice Trintignant drove 0674 in its original 315 S form at the Sebring 12 Hours. It finished sixth. The ACO’s historical account says the car led for the first 20 laps before dropping back.

Mille Miglia: second place for von Trips
In May, Wolfgang von Trips drove 0674 to second in the Mille Miglia, behind Piero Taruffi in another Ferrari, according to Artcurial and the ACO. The race was overshadowed by the fatal crash involving Alfonso de Portago’s Ferrari; that was a separate car, not chassis 0674.
Le Mans: a record lap, then retirement
After its engine enlargement, 0674 entered the June 1957 Le Mans 24 Hours as a 335 S, car number 7, driven by Mike Hawthorn and Luigi Musso. Artcurial reports that Hawthorn recorded the first lap at an average speed above 200 km/h: 203.015 km/h. The car did not win. It retired in the fifth hour with engine trouble, described more generally as mechanical problems by the ACO.

Why some records associate it with chassis 0656
Artcurial’s sale addendum says that, in all probability, the factory entered 0674 at Le Mans under chassis number 0656, and that the 0656 stamping remains partially visible. The addendum presents the customs-duty explanation as probable, not certain. It also says the car resumed its 0674 identity at the Swedish Grand Prix. This is a qualified provenance detail, rather than evidence that the car’s identity can be stated without caveat.
Restoration and ownership
Artcurial says the car received period pontoon-fender bodywork for South American competition and was restored by Fantuzzi in 1981 to its original configuration. Its addendum says the pontoon-fender section was retained separately.

Published specifications and what they establish
Published power and speed figures vary by source and should be treated as specifications, not verified modern performance measurements. Artcurial describes the Tipo 141 four-litre engine as producing about 400 bhp. Car Collector International gives a model-level figure of 390 hp at 7,400 rpm and an approximate top speed of 300 km/h. The guide lists four 335 S examples—0674, 0676, 0700 and 0764—and says the first two were converted from 315 S specification; it does not provide a basis here for ranking all four cars.
