Hagerty later reported the transaction at $300,900 (£229,000), a separately stated fee-inclusive figure. The car had previously sold at RM Sotheby’s in January 2024 for $204,400.
What happened to Hitchcock’s Bentley?
The car is a 1958 Bentley S1 Continental Flying Spur Sports Saloon by H.J. Mulliner, chassis BC34LEL. Bring a Trailer’s listing records 44 bids and a $295,000 winning bid when its auction ended September 30, 2024. Bring a Trailer’s listing is the primary record for that result and the car details it advertised.
Hagerty’s October 7, 2024 report gives the later transaction as $300,900 (£229,000). That is a separately reported, fee-inclusive total; it should not be mistaken for the winning-bid figure on Bring a Trailer. Hagerty’s report also recounts the earlier sale.
Why is the car linked to Alfred Hitchcock?
The connection rests on records cited by RM Sotheby’s, rather than a sourced first-person account. The auction house says the original build record names “Rolls-Royce Inc. for Mr. Alfred Hitchcock” as the customer, and that Rolls-Royce Foundation ownership cards show the car arrived in Los Angeles on August 27, 1958 for delivery to Hitchcock. What kind of Bentley is it?
RM Sotheby’s identifies BC34LEL as a six-light Flying Spur Sports Saloon by H.J. Mulliner. “Six-light” refers to the saloon’s window arrangement, including full rear quarter windows. According to the auction house’s lot record, 54 cars were built to this six-light design, of which 16 were originally left-hand drive.
The car was specified with left-hand drive, power steering, increased-capacity air conditioning and a miles-per-hour speedometer. Bring a Trailer’s listing describes a 4.9-liter inline-six engine with twin SU carburetors, a four-speed automatic transmission, servo-assisted drum brakes, burl wood trim and beige leather upholstery. It also says the car was refurbished and repainted dark green, with historical documentation and refurbishment records accompanying it. Those are listing descriptions, not independent inspection findings.

The two auction records are different transactions less than a year apart, and the later sources use different price bases. They do not, on their own, establish an investment return or quantify any premium for Hitchcock’s ownership; that would require consistent fee treatment and information about intervening costs and condition.

RM Sotheby’s describes the car as a 1958 Bentley but notes in its addendum: “Please note that this lot is titled as a 1957.” That explains why a title document may show a different year from the model-year description; it does not change the auction house’s identification of the car as a 1958 model.
