The term covers open-air autocycles, reverse trikes with two front wheels, narrow urban EVs, enclosed microcars, tilting commuters, historic bubble cars, and high-performance machines that feel closer to road-going racing equipment than ordinary passenger cars.
Some are in current production or available to order, while others remain prototypes, concepts, discontinued models, or collectibles. Here are 16 of the most unusual examples, with their layouts, standout features, availability, and the ownership caveats that matter.

Why build a car with three wheels?
Designers choose three wheels for several different reasons. Removing one wheel can reduce mass, rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag, and mechanical complexity. A narrow layout can also make a vehicle easier to maneuver and park in dense cities. At the opposite end of the spectrum, three wheels can create an intentionally dramatic driving experience, with exposed suspension, an open cockpit, tandem seating, or an engine mounted in full view.
Recommended Free Tools
The wheel arrangement matters. A reverse trike has two wheels at the front and one driven wheel at the rear; this is common among modern performance three-wheelers. A conventional tricycle layout has one front wheel and two rear wheels, as seen on the Reliant Robin. Other designs place the occupants in tandem, use a tilting body, or combine three wheels with an enclosed electric cabin.

Current production and orderable three-wheelers
1. Morgan Super 3
Status: current production; available through Morgan dealers in the United States.
The Morgan Super 3 is a handcrafted British sports three-wheeler with exposed front wheels, a minimalist body, and the unmistakable visual drama associated with Morgan. It is not a stripped-down historic replica: Morgan describes the Super 3 as an all-new three-wheeled sports car for the modern market, using a liquid-cooled automotive engine and offering touring-oriented equipment and customization options.
That combination makes the Super 3 unusual even within this unusual category. It has the visual language of a classic Morgan but the engineering and equipment of a contemporary vehicle. Buyers should think of it as an exotic recreational sports machine rather than inexpensive transportation. In the U.S., Morgan says ordering is handled through dealers rather than direct factory sales, so availability and specifications should be confirmed with a local retailer. Readers interested in the handcrafted route can find a Morgan Super 3 dealer, subject to regional availability and any applicable referral arrangement.
2. Polaris Slingshot
Status: current U.S. production and active marketing.
The Polaris Slingshot is perhaps the best-known modern three-wheeler in North America. Polaris calls it a three-wheeled motorcycle, although its controls are deliberately car-like: the vehicle has a steering wheel and pedals, side-by-side seating, roll hoops, an open cockpit, and one rear drive wheel.
For 2026, Polaris lists S, SL, SLR, R, Signature Edition, and Grand Touring variants in the United States. The listed starting MSRPs range from $24,999 for the S to $41,999 for the Grand Touring, before destination charges, taxes, title, registration, and other costs. Those figures are model-year and market specific, so they should not be treated as universal pricing.
The Slingshot is more approachable than a tandem motorcycle because the occupants sit beside each other and the driver uses a wheel and pedals. It is still exposed to weather, has a single rear drive wheel, and may be regulated differently from a passenger car. Polaris promotes dealer test rides and rentals, making it sensible to book a Slingshot test ride before deciding whether the seating position, wind exposure, visibility, and handling suit you. Owners should also verify year-specific fitment before buying Polaris Slingshot accessories; not every storage, comfort, or protection product fits every model.
3. Campagna T-REX RR
Status: current production and orderable.
The Campagna T-REX RR is the performance extremist of the current group. Campagna lists a 1,441cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, 208 horsepower, a sequential six-speed gearbox, ABS, traction control, a roll-cage chassis, and a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.9 seconds. Its stated starting MSRP is $64,999, and Campagna says the 2026 RR is available to order.
Unlike an ordinary sports car, the T-REX uses a tubular chassis, very low seating, chain drive, and sequential manual shifting. The result is a machine with a much stronger mechanical and motorsport flavor than the Slingshot. It is street legal, but its design prioritizes intensity, feedback, and open-air drama over easy ingress, luggage capacity, or quiet cruising.
Campagna provides dealer and inventory pathways, so performance-oriented shoppers can find a Campagna T-REX dealer or inquire about a T-REX RR test drive. The price and equipment make this a specialized purchase, not a casual substitute for a conventional commuter.

4. Vanderhall Venice
Status: availability depends on market, dealer, and trim.
The Vanderhall Venice applies a more familiar long-hood, two-seat roadster shape to a three-wheel autocycle. That gives it a different personality from the angular Slingshot: it looks more like a small classic sports car, even though its three-wheel layout and regulatory identity remain distinctly unconventional.
Vanderhall’s model family has included the Venice along with the Edison, Carmel, and Santarosa. Because model names and trims can move in and out of regional catalogs, a Venice should not automatically be described as a currently orderable model in every market. Confirm inventory, model year, equipment, and registration requirements with an authorized source.
5. Vanderhall Carmel
Status: availability depends on market and trim.
The Carmel is Vanderhall’s more comfort-oriented roadster relative to the simpler Venice. It retains the dramatic three-wheel stance but presents a more upscale, relaxed interpretation of the format. Company vehicle documentation identifies Carmel derivatives including GT, GTS, R, and Speedster versions, although that does not mean every derivative remains in the current catalog.
The Carmel is interesting because it tries to make an inherently unusual vehicle feel closer to a luxury roadster. Its three-wheel configuration and motorcycle/autocycle identity still separate it from a normal convertible, and buyers should verify current regional availability rather than relying on older trim lists or used-vehicle advertisements.
6. Vanderhall Edison2
Status: electric Vanderhall model; ordering and inventory should be verified by region.
The Edison2 is one of the category’s most visually deceptive vehicles. Its classic-looking roadster body conceals an electric drivetrain with twin 52-kilowatt motors. Vanderhall materials describe a 52-kWh battery configuration, an estimated range of 200 miles, and 140 equivalent horsepower.
Those figures are manufacturer-provided specifications, and range depends on configuration, weather, speed, and driving conditions. The Edison2 demonstrates how a three-wheeler can be more than an engine-powered novelty: it can use the format to combine low visual mass, an unusual stance, and quiet electric propulsion. Actual availability should be checked through the relevant Vanderhall market site or dealer.

7. Vanderhall Santarosa
Status: electric model with configuration- and market-dependent availability.
The Santarosa pushes Vanderhall’s concept further toward an enclosed electric car. The U.S. model information describes a three-wheel electric autocycle with standard and extended-range battery configurations, plus optional rear seats. One configuration is listed with an estimated 100-mile range on the standard battery and up to 150 miles with the extended pack. Separate higher-output GTS information is presented independently, so those figures should not be blended together as though they apply to every Santarosa.
That combination of a more protective cabin, electric power, and available extra seating makes the Santarosa one of the closest vehicles here to a compact luxury car. It remains a specialized three-wheeler, however, and the manufacturer’s estimates should be treated as configuration-specific rather than guaranteed real-world range.

8. Aptera
Status: development stage; not a delivered mass-production car.
Aptera is a solar-electric three-wheeler designed around extreme efficiency. It has two seats, a teardrop-shaped aerodynamic body, wheel pants, lightweight construction, and integrated solar panels intended to add energy while the vehicle is parked or traveling in suitable conditions.
Its shape is unlike almost any conventional EV because the body is designed around minimizing aerodynamic drag rather than imitating a sedan or crossover. That is the appeal: Aptera promises a vehicle that can use substantially less energy than a typical electric car while still offering weather protection and highway-oriented transportation.
The crucial distinction is production status. Aptera’s 2026 SEC filing states that production had not commenced as of the filing and that the company remained focused on completing development and beginning production. Reservations, projected specifications, and production targets are not the same as completed customer deliveries. It is best described as a solar-electric three-wheeler in development, not as an EV that shoppers can routinely buy and collect today.
9. Arcimoto FUV
Status: vehicle design and historical production are established; current retail and delivery status should be independently verified.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Arcimoto FUV, or Fun Utility Vehicle, is a tandem two-seat electric three-wheeler. The driver and passenger sit one behind the other, giving the vehicle a very narrow footprint compared with side-by-side roadsters. It uses motorcycle-like controls and an autocycle-style open layout, aiming to combine the low-energy character of a motorcycle with seating and weather equipment more associated with a small car.
The tandem arrangement is the FUV’s defining visual and practical feature. It can make the vehicle narrow and city-friendly, but it also means the passenger experience, conversation, loading space, and weather exposure differ substantially from a conventional two-seat car. The design should not be confused with proof of a currently active, widely available retail program; confirm production, service, and delivery status before treating one as a new-vehicle purchase.
10. ElectraMeccanica SOLO
Status: released/development-era vehicle; current production and delivery status is uncertain.
The ElectraMeccanica SOLO takes the opposite approach from a performance roadster: it is a single-seat, weather-protected electric commuter. The company’s official FAQ lists up to 100 miles of range and an 80-mph top speed. ElectraMeccanica argued that three wheels could reduce weight, rolling resistance, and aerodynamic drag compared with a conventional car.

The SOLO makes sense for a specific use case: a person who usually drives alone and wants a small, enclosed vehicle rather than an exposed motorcycle. It is not a family car, and its single seat limits its usefulness for errands involving passengers. The company website still contains product, reservation, manual, and warranty information, but those pages alone do not establish a dependable current production or delivery program.
11. Carver
Status: leaning technology and concept are established; broad U.S. retail availability is unverified.
Rank #4
- Hot Wheels 2019 HW Green Speed Tesla Model 3 174/250, Maroon
Carver is unusual even among three-wheelers because the body leans into corners. The company describes a design that combines motorcycle-like cornering dynamics with car-like seating and protection. The driver and passenger sit inside a body supported by a steel frame, and the company says both have seat belts.
The essential engineering idea is that the cabin or front module can lean while the rear module remains comparatively stable. That allows a narrow vehicle to corner with a motorcycle-like motion instead of simply behaving like a tiny rigid car. It is a compelling solution to the conflict between narrow urban packaging and four-wheel-car expectations, but the current corporate material should not be interpreted as proof that Carver is a mass-market U.S. vehicle.

Status: announced project or prototype; production results are not verified.
Daymak announced the Spiritus as an electric three-wheeler in Deluxe and Ultimate versions. The announcement claimed up to 180 miles of range for the Deluxe, up to 300 miles for the Ultimate, and a claimed 0–60 mph time of 1.8 seconds for the Ultimate.
The project was ambitious beyond its headline acceleration. Daymak also discussed solar and charging ideas, autonomous-driving features, and cryptocurrency-mining hardware. Those claims helped make the Spiritus one of the wildest concepts in the category, but they should remain labeled as announced or proposed specifications. They are not independently verified production results, and the vehicle should not be presented as a routinely available performance EV.

It used tandem seating, a narrow body, and leaning technology intended to provide motorcycle-like maneuverability with more car-like convenience.
The i-Road’s goal was not high-speed touring or weekend excitement. Toyota emphasized that its small footprint could reduce parking demand and make it easier to move through congested cities. The vehicle was associated with trials and personal-mobility experiments rather than a conventional mass-market launch, so it belongs in the concept and urban-mobility category rather than on a current Toyota showroom list.

14. Peel P50
Status: historic and collectible.
The Peel P50 is one of the most famous tiny vehicles ever built. The National Motor Museum identifies it as an ultra-light, single-seat three-wheeler powered by a DKW motorcycle engine, and describes it as the world’s smallest production car and the only one built on the Isle of Man. Peel’s current promotional material gives it approximate dimensions of 54 inches long and 41 inches wide.
At that size, the P50 is not simply a conventional car reduced in scale. It is a motorized cockpit built around minimum dimensions, with barely enough room for one occupant. Its compactness is precisely what makes it memorable, but it also explains why it is better understood as a collectible microcar than as practical modern transportation. Contemporary replicas or display models may exist, but the historic P50 itself should not be treated as ordinary new-car inventory.

The Reliant Robin is the classic British three-wheeled car: one wheel at the front, two at the rear, a fully enclosed body, a front-mounted engine, and rear-wheel drive. The Reliant Motor Club’s history places the Robin’s introduction in 1973 and records several generations built through the early 2000s, along with later licensed-production attempts.

The Robin was designed as an economical, lightweight enclosed vehicle rather than an exotic sports machine. Its three-wheel layout and distinctive place in British popular culture made it far more recognizable than its modest engineering would suggest. The Robin, along with the Reliant Regal, Rialto, and Bond Bug, belongs to an important British three-wheeler lineage.
Its cultural reputation should not be confused with a complete assessment of its engineering or safety. Entertainment-show stunts and jokes are not substitutes for documented testing. Today, condition, originality, parts availability, registration, and local rules matter more than the model’s old new-car specifications.
16. Messerschmitt KR200
Status: historic and collectible.
The Messerschmitt KR200 is a defining postwar bubble car. According to the Malamut Auto Museum, the 1955 KR200 emerged after the German aircraft manufacturer turned toward ultra-small three-wheeled vehicles. It used tandem seating beneath an aircraft-inspired bubble canopy and a 191cc engine.
Recommended Free Tools
The museum gives the KR200 a claimed top speed of 62 mph. That figure should be attributed to the museum and not generalized to every KR200 variant or every surviving example. What makes the car wild is its combination of aircraft styling, narrow three-wheel packaging, and front-and-back seating. It looks less like a shrunken sedan than a tiny enclosed cockpit built for a Europe rebuilding after the Second World War.
What to check before buying or driving one
A three-wheeler’s legal identity can be just as important as its engine or battery. Polaris explicitly describes the Slingshot as a three-wheeled motorcycle, while Campagna notes that regulations vary by state or province. There is no universal rule covering every vehicle on this list.
- Classification: Ask how your local transportation authority classifies the exact make, model, year, and configuration. The answer may differ from the manufacturer’s marketing language.
- License requirements: Confirm whether a standard driver’s license is enough or whether a motorcycle endorsement or other credential is required.
- Helmet rules: Check the law where you will drive, even if the vehicle has a steering wheel, seat belts, or roll hoops. Helmet requirements vary by jurisdiction and vehicle classification.
- Registration and title: Make sure the vehicle can be titled and registered at your address before paying a deposit or importing a collectible.
- Insurance: Obtain a quote for the exact vehicle. A motorcycle, autocycle, specialty vehicle, or passenger-car policy may have different coverage terms.
- Weather and storage: Open-air models need a realistic plan for rain, cold, sun, security, and off-season storage. Enclosed electric models solve some problems but may have different service and charging requirements.
- Passenger and cargo needs: Tandem seating, single-seat cabins, optional rear seats, and small luggage areas make these vehicles poor substitutes for ordinary family cars in many situations.
- Service support: Dealer reach, parts supply, battery support, and specialist repair knowledge can matter more than headline performance.
For a new vehicle, a dealer inspection and a properly insured test drive are worthwhile. For a historic model, have the chassis, drivetrain, brakes, electrical system, structural condition, title, and parts availability checked by someone familiar with that marque.
Which kind of three-wheeler makes sense?
| If you want… | Start with… | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Open-air fun with side-by-side seating | Polaris Slingshot | Motorcycle/autocycle rules and weather exposure apply. |
| Handcrafted British character | Morgan Super 3 | Dealer-based ordering and specialty-car pricing. |
| Maximum performance focus | Campagna T-REX RR | High price, low seating, sequential transmission, and specialist ownership. |
| A more roadster-like luxury presentation | Vanderhall Venice or Carmel | Verify current trim and regional inventory. |
| An electric three-wheeler available in a current market | Selected Vanderhall electric models | Confirm configuration, range estimate, ordering, and service support. |
| Solar-electric efficiency | Aptera | Development stage; production had not begun according to its 2026 SEC filing. |
| A historical conversation piece | Peel P50, Reliant Robin, or Messerschmitt KR200 | Condition, provenance, registration, and parts are central to the purchase. |
The most important distinction is not whether a vehicle has three wheels. It is whether the vehicle is a current product, an uncertain or development-stage project, a concept, or a collectible from another era. A Slingshot or Super 3 can be investigated through current dealers; an Aptera or Spiritus requires patience and careful separation of targets from delivered products; a P50, Robin, or KR200 is fundamentally a historic-vehicle purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are three-wheeled cars legal to drive in the United States?
Many are street legal, but the answer depends on the exact vehicle and jurisdiction. Classification, licensing, registration, insurance, and helmet rules can vary by state. Check your state transportation authority and insurer before buying.
Do all three-wheeled cars require a motorcycle license?
No universal rule applies. Polaris describes the Slingshot as a three-wheeled motorcycle, while other vehicles may be classified as autocycles or specialty vehicles. Verify the requirements for the exact model in your state or province.
Is the Aptera available to buy now?
Aptera remains a development-stage vehicle in the research period covered here. Its 2026 SEC filing stated that production had not commenced, so reservations or projected production targets should not be treated as completed customer deliveries.
Are three-wheeled cars safer than four-wheeled cars?
A three-wheel layout is not a safety rating. Crash protection, stability systems, structure, restraints, tires, weather exposure, and driver behavior all matter, and vehicles in this category differ substantially. Research the exact model and follow local equipment requirements.
Which three-wheeled car is best for commuting?
That depends on whether you need one seat or two, weather protection, highway capability, charging access, cargo room, and local legal classification. The SOLO and some electric concepts target commuting, while the Slingshot, Super 3, and T-REX are primarily recreational machines.
The Bottom Line
The wildest thing about three-wheeled cars is how many different problems they try to solve. The Slingshot and T-REX turn three wheels into open-air performance; the Morgan and Vanderhalls turn them into stylish roadsters; Aptera and the electric projects pursue efficiency; Carver and Toyota’s i-Road explore narrow, leaning urban mobility; and the Peel, Reliant, and Messerschmitt show how inventive microcars became long before modern EVs.
Just remember that three wheels describe a layout, not a legal category or a guarantee of safety. Check the vehicle’s actual availability, local rules, insurance, and support network before treating any of these machines as your next car.
