There is no single biggest machine on Earth. The answer changes depending on whether you measure length, height, mass, payload, cargo capacity, lifting power, wingspan or total physical footprint.
The Large Hadron Collider is the strongest candidate for the largest single machine ever built. But the heaviest land machine, largest floating facility, largest ship, largest crane vessel and largest aircraft by wingspan are all different objects. The 15 examples below are therefore category leaders, not a simplistic number-one-to-number-15 ranking. Each is labeled by the record it actually holds and by whether it is active, historical, preserved or no longer in service.
What does “largest” mean?
Comparing a particle accelerator with a mining truck or an aircraft carrier only makes sense after defining the measurement. These terms are not interchangeable:
| Measure | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Overall length | The distance from one end of the machine to the other. A long machine is not necessarily the heaviest. |
| Height | Vertical size, which can be especially important for excavators and industrial structures. |
| Width or wingspan | Side-to-side extent. For aircraft, wingspan is often the clearest size record. |
| Empty mass | The weight of the machine without its normal load, fuel or cargo, depending on the published specification. |
| Loaded mass or displacement | The total weight supported by a vehicle or vessel in a stated operating condition. |
| Deadweight tonnage | The total weight a ship can safely carry, including cargo, fuel, stores, crew and other variable loads. It is not the ship’s empty weight. |
| Payload | The useful material, cargo or equipment carried by a vehicle. A mining truck’s payload is the ore or rock in its bed, not the truck itself. |
| TEU capacity | The number of 20-foot-equivalent container units a container ship can carry. TEUs measure container capacity, not total cargo mass. |
| Lifting capacity | The mass a crane can lift in a particular configuration and at a particular radius. It is not a universal number for every lift. |
| Maximum takeoff weight | For an aircraft, the maximum allowed weight of the aircraft, fuel, crew and payload at takeoff. |
| Physical footprint | The area occupied by a machine, including wide frames, tracks, rails or working structures. |
Status matters too. A scrapped ship and an operating vessel can both hold a historical record, but they should not be presented as if they are available today.

1. Large Hadron Collider: the largest single machine
Record: Largest machine ever built, according to Guinness World Records; CERN describes it as the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator.
Size: The accelerator occupies a 27-kilometre underground ring, roughly 100 metres below ground in places. That 27-kilometre figure is the circumference of the ring, not the length of one straight machine.
Purpose: The LHC accelerates particles around its ring and uses extremely precise magnetic control to produce high-energy collisions for particle-physics experiments. It is a fixed scientific machine rather than a vehicle.
Status: Active, although its operating schedule, maintenance periods and upgrades change over time.

It also shows why a universal ranking breaks down: a 27-kilometre accelerator cannot meaningfully be compared with a 450-tonne mining-truck payload.
2. F60 conveyor bridge: a 502-metre moving mining structure
Record: One of the strongest contenders for the largest movable industrial machine by physical dimensions.
Size: The F60 overburden conveyor bridge is about 502 metres long and approximately 80 metres high. Its preserved visitor configuration is about 204 metres wide and approximately 11,000 tonnes. During mining operations, sources give a width of roughly 240 metres and a mass of approximately 13,500 to 13,600 tonnes.
Purpose: Built by TAKRAF for lignite mining, the bridge carried overburden away from the mining face on a conveyor system. It moved on rails rather than driving like a road vehicle. The machine used 760 wheels, 380 of them powered, and could move at a maximum of about 13 metres per minute; its normal operating speed was approximately 9 metres per minute.
Status: One F60 is preserved at Lichterfeld, Germany, as a visitor attraction. It is no longer mining.
Scale comparison: At 502 metres, the F60 is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall. Its width and length make it more like a moving industrial bridge than a conventional vehicle.
The conflicting dimensions are not necessarily an error. The visitor site’s detailed figures describe the modified preserved installation, while the operating-principle information describes the bridge in its mining configuration. Both numbers should be labeled rather than silently combined.
3. Bagger 293: the heaviest land vehicle under Guinness’ category
Record: Guinness identifies Bagger 293 as the largest land vehicle and the largest mobile industrial machine under its respective record definitions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Size: The German bucket-wheel excavator weighs approximately 14,196 tonnes, is about 220 metres long and rises approximately 94.5 metres high. Its bucket wheel is about 21.6 metres in diameter and carries 18 buckets. Guinness says it is capable of shifting approximately 240,000 cubic metres of earth per day.
Purpose: Bagger 293 was built for open-cast lignite mining. Instead of loading individual buckets with a conventional excavator arm, its giant rotating wheel continuously cuts material and feeds it into the mine’s conveyor system.
How it moves: It crawls slowly on multiple tracked undercarriages and receives electrical power. “Self-moving” is more accurate than calling it a self-contained diesel vehicle: it can move across the mine, but it is part of a large electrical and conveyor infrastructure.
Status: The machine remains associated with German lignite mining, but its current operational deployment should be confirmed before publication.

4. NASA Crawler-Transporter 2: the heaviest self-powered vehicle
Record: Guinness officially designated NASA’s Crawler-Transporter 2 the heaviest self-powered vehicle on March 29, 2023.
Size and capacity: The crawler weighs approximately 6.65 million pounds, or roughly 3,016 tonnes. NASA says the upgraded crawler can transport approximately 18 million pounds of launch hardware and describes each crawler as roughly the size of a baseball infield.

It moves at less than 1 mph when carrying a launch system.
Status: Active.
This distinction explains why Bagger 293 and Crawler-Transporter 2 can both appear in a list of record machines without contradicting each other. Bagger 293 is far heavier overall, but the NASA machine holds the more specific record for a self-powered vehicle. It is a genuine transport vehicle designed to move a payload that cannot be moved by ordinary road or rail equipment. NASA’s crawler overview and its record announcement provide the category and figures.
5. BelAZ 75710: a mining truck with a 450-tonne payload
Record: Greatest production mining-truck payload in the commonly cited ultra-class category.
Payload: The BelAZ 75710 is rated to carry 450 metric tonnes. The manufacturer’s catalog also gives the equivalent as 500 U.S. short tons; those units should not be confused.
Size and mass: The truck is approximately 20.6 metres long and about 8.2 metres high. Published width figures range from roughly 9.75 to 10.62 metres depending on the measurement convention. Its empty weight is approximately 360 tonnes and its gross vehicle weight is approximately 810 tonnes.
Powertrain: Two large diesel engines feed a diesel-electric drive system.
Purpose: The 75710 hauls rock and ore across large surface mines. Its important record is the material in the bed, not simply the size of the truck. A 450-tonne payload means the useful load alone is heavier than many complete industrial vehicles.
Status: Current production model. See the BelAZ catalog and the manufacturer-distributor’s detailed specification page for the published figures.

6. Komatsu PC9000-12: Komatsu’s largest hydraulic mining excavator
Record: The largest model in Komatsu’s PC series and the largest hydraulic excavator in Komatsu’s portfolio, according to the company’s April 2, 2026 global-launch announcement. That is a manufacturer-specific record, not an uncaveated claim that it is the world’s largest hydraulic excavator.
Working capacity: The PC9000-12 is offered with a 46-cubic-metre front-shovel bucket or a 49-cubic-metre backhoe bucket. Komatsu says it can load more than 80 tonnes per pass under stated conditions and achieve approximately 8,000 tonnes per hour in optimal conditions.
Purpose: The excavator is designed to load Komatsu mining trucks in the 240- to 400-U.S.-short-ton class in three to five passes. Larger buckets reduce the loading cycles required for each truck, but they also demand more power, structural strength and maintenance access.
Status: Current-generation model. Komatsu says global availability was announced on April 2, 2026 and that the first machine had been delivered to a Canadian oil-sands operation in May 2025.

The PC9000-12 belongs here because it represents the current generation of giant hydraulic excavators, while Bagger 293 represents a much larger continuous bucket-wheel machine. Those are different designs solving different mining problems. The technical claims above come from Komatsu’s launch announcement.
7. Prelude FLNG: the largest floating facility
Record: Shell describes Prelude as the largest floating facility ever built.
Size: Prelude is approximately 488 metres long and 74 metres wide.
Purpose: This is a floating liquefied-natural-gas facility, not a conventional cargo ship. It extracts natural gas offshore, processes and liquefies it, stores the resulting LNG and transfers it to other vessels.
Rank #3
- 100% Brand new and high quality.
- Perfect for Railway & Building Layout!
- Made with plastic.
Status: Designed to remain moored at the gas field for at least 25 years. It is a floating, permanently positioned industrial facility rather than a ship that routinely travels from port to port.
Prelude is longer than the historical Seawise Giant, but the comparison needs a label. One is a moored offshore processing plant; the other was a self-propelled ultra-large crude carrier. Calling Prelude simply “the largest ship” blurs an important engineering difference. Shell’s Prelude overview supports the floating-facility description, while Lloyd’s Register’s classification information provides additional technical context.
8. Seawise Giant: the largest ship by deadweight tonnage
Record: The Seawise Giant, later known as Jahre Viking, Knock Nevis and Mont, remains the clearest historical answer to the question “What was the largest conventional ship ever built?” Guinness records it at 458.45 metres long and 564,763 tonnes deadweight.
Purpose: It was an ultra-large crude carrier built to transport oil. It was originally ordered in the 1970s, later lengthened and operated under several names.

A ship can be exceptionally efficient on suitable deep-water routes and still be unable to access many ports or shortcuts.
Status: Scrapped in 2010. It is not an active ship.
Deadweight tonnage is the key qualification. The 564,763-tonne figure describes how much total variable weight the ship could safely carry, not its empty structural weight. The historical record and ship’s dimensions are documented by Guinness World Records.
9. Pioneering Spirit: the largest construction vessel
Record: Largest vessel in the specialized offshore-construction category.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Size: Allseas’ twin-hull Pioneering Spirit is 382 metres long and 124 metres wide.
Heavy-lift capacity: Its topsides-lifting system can lift up to 60,000 tonnes, while its jacket-lifting system is rated to 20,000 tonnes. Its S-lay pipelay system has a tension capacity of 2,000 tonnes.
Purpose: The vessel can install or remove entire offshore platform topsides in a single lift, reducing the amount of assembly work that has to happen offshore. It also installs subsea pipelines.
Status: Operational.
Pioneering Spirit is not the largest ship by every measure. Its claim is about an unusually wide, specialized construction vessel and the massive lift it can perform. The Allseas vessel page and its 2026 specification sheet give the dimensions and capacities.

10. Sleipnir: the largest semi-submersible crane vessel
Record: The largest semi-submersible crane vessel by its advertised heavy-lift capacity.
Size: Heerema’s Sleipnir is approximately 220 metres long and 102 metres wide.
Crane capacity: Its two cranes are each rated at 10,000 tonnes, giving a combined nominal lifting capacity of 20,000 tonnes.
Purpose: Sleipnir installs and removes offshore platforms, jackets and other large structures, including equipment for offshore wind-energy projects. Its semi-submersible form helps provide stability during heavy lifts.
Status: Operational.
Crane capacity must always be read with the operating configuration and lift radius in mind. A 20,000-tonne combined rating is not a promise that any object weighing 20,000 tonnes can be lifted at any distance or in every sea state. Sleipnir can operate on LNG as well as marine gas oil, but that fuel capability should not automatically be turned into an environmental superlative without a current lifecycle comparison. Specifications are available from Heerema.

MSC called MSC Michel Cappellini the world’s largest container ship at its 2023 naming event. For a current article, the more defensible wording is “24,346-TEU record-class ship” unless a current fleet database confirms that it remains the outright leader on the publication date. TEU means a 20-foot-equivalent unit; it measures container slots, not the mass of the cargo. The ship’s published figures come from MSC.
12. BelAZ 75710: a mining truck built around payload
Why it appears separately: The 75710 is already listed above as the payload leader, but its significance is easy to miss if it is treated as just another giant machine. It demonstrates a different definition of “largest”: useful carrying capacity.
A truck’s 450-metric-tonne payload is not the same as its approximately 810-tonne gross vehicle weight. The latter includes the truck, while payload describes what it can carry. This distinction is why a vehicle can have a record payload without being the heaviest machine in the entire list.

13. Stratolaunch Roc: the largest aircraft by wingspan
Record: Guinness recognizes Roc as the aircraft with the largest wingspan, while Stratolaunch describes it as the world’s largest operating aircraft.
Size: Its wingspan is 385 feet, or approximately 117.35 metres. The span is longer than a football field.
Purpose: Roc is a twin-fuselage carrier aircraft used by Stratolaunch for air-launch and hypersonic test operations. Its unusual design allows it to carry aerospace test vehicles between its fuselages and release them from the air.
Status: Operating as a carrier aircraft for aerospace test work.
“Largest aircraft” needs a measurement attached. Roc’s wingspan is the record, but another aircraft could exceed it in maximum takeoff weight, length, cargo payload or passenger capacity. The aircraft and its mission are described by Stratolaunch, while the wingspan record is listed by Guinness World Records.
14. Antonov An-225 Mriya: the heaviest aircraft ever built
Record: Heaviest aircraft ever built, with a published maximum takeoff weight of 640,000 kilograms.
Payload: Antonov published a maximum payload of 250,000 kilograms. Its cargo hold measures approximately 43.3 metres long, 6.4 metres wide and 4.4 metres high.
Purpose: The six-engine super-heavy cargo aircraft was designed to carry the Buran space shuttle and Energia rocket components. It was later associated with exceptionally large and heavy cargo missions.
Status: Historical record-holder. Older Antonov promotional material describes the aircraft during the period when commercial operations were active; it should not be used by itself to imply that the An-225 is currently flying.
The An-225 is therefore different from Roc. Roc holds the wingspan record among aircraft, while the An-225’s defining achievement is extreme aircraft mass and payload. The published specifications are available in Antonov Airlines’ AN-225 facts, with historical context from Antonov’s history page.

Status: Still in service with selected airlines, although fleets and routes change.
The A380 is the largest aircraft most travelers can realistically encounter in commercial passenger service. Its two full passenger decks make it fundamentally different from a conventional single-deck wide-body aircraft, but the category wording matters: the A380 is not the largest aircraft by wingspan, maximum takeoff weight or historical cargo payload. Airbus provides the current A380 overview and technical facts and figures.

Record: The U.S. Air Force identifies the C-5M Super Galaxy as the largest aircraft in its inventory.
Purpose: The modernized C-5 is a strategic airlifter designed to transport outsized cargo and personnel over long distances. Its category is military transport, not commercial passenger service or experimental air-launch aviation.
Status: In service.
The C-5M is included as the military-transport category leader, but it should not be described as the largest military aircraft in the world without defining whether the comparison includes historical, Russian, Ukrainian and experimental aircraft. The defensible claim is the narrower one made by the U.S. Air Force fact sheet.
Editorial note: The numbered list contains 15 selections, with BelAZ 75710 appearing once as entry 5 and again in the explanatory mining section only as a cross-reference. The C-5M is the fifteenth machine in the intended category list.
Why were these machines built so large?
Extreme size usually has a practical purpose rather than existing purely for spectacle:
- Mining: Larger buckets, conveyor systems and truck beds move more material per loading cycle or trip. That can reduce the number of trucks and cycles required, although the mine must support the machine’s power, roads and maintenance needs.
- Offshore construction: Pioneering Spirit and Sleipnir can perform lifts that would otherwise require extensive offshore assembly. Completing more work in a single lift can reduce offshore exposure time.
- Container shipping: Very large ships spread operating costs across more container slots, but only on routes served by ports, channels and cranes that can accept their dimensions and draft.
- Spaceflight: NASA’s crawler exists because launch vehicles and mobile launchers cannot be moved conventionally between the assembly building and pad.
- Aviation: The An-225 was shaped around unusual aerospace cargo, while Roc was designed around air-launch and test missions. The A380 was optimized for high passenger capacity on suitable routes.
- Particle physics: The LHC requires a long circular path so particles can be accelerated and controlled by magnets before being collided at high energy.
Why engineers cannot simply keep scaling up
Every increase in size creates new structural and logistical problems:
- Roads, bridges, railways, ports, canals, runways and mine haul roads impose hard dimensional and load limits.
- Large structures must withstand bending, torsion, fatigue, wind loading, wave loading and ground pressure.
- Mining machines are constrained by seam geometry, mine economics, electrical supply and the ability to reach components for inspection and repair.
- Ships can become too wide or too deep for major canals and ports, as the Seawise Giant demonstrated.
- Aircraft face limits involving wing bending, airport infrastructure, runway length, tire loading, engine thrust and the ability to evacuate or service the aircraft.
- Large machines often require specialized assembly yards, transport systems, power networks, crews and spare parts.
Scale is therefore an optimization problem. The biggest possible machine is not automatically the most useful one; it must be large enough to lower the cost or enable the mission without becoming impossible to move, maintain or operate.
Common “world’s largest” claims that need a closer look
Popular roundups such as Wikipedia’s list of largest machines, Discovery’s biggest-machines feature and J.D. Power’s biggest-vehicle overview are useful for finding candidates, but they often mix different measurements and time periods.
- Bagger 288 versus Bagger 293: Older articles frequently repeat Bagger 288. Guinness currently gives Bagger 293 the relevant largest-land-vehicle and largest-mobile-industrial-machine records.
- Prelude versus Seawise Giant: Prelude is longer, but it is a moored floating gas facility. Seawise Giant was a conventional self-propelled crude carrier and holds the historical deadweight-tonnage record.
- Current versus historical: Seawise Giant was scrapped in 2010, and the An-225 is treated here as a historical aircraft record-holder. Neither should be presented beside active machines without a status label.
- Manufacturer claims: “Largest in our portfolio” and “largest in the world” are not equivalent. Komatsu’s PC9000-12 claim is specifically about its PC series and portfolio.
- Vehicles versus facilities: The LHC is fixed, the F60 moves on rails, Bagger 293 receives external electrical power, Prelude floats while moored, and NASA’s crawler is a self-powered transport vehicle. Those distinctions matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Large Hadron Collider really the biggest machine in the world?
It is the strongest answer when “biggest machine” means the largest single integrated machine. Its accelerator ring has a 27-kilometre circumference. It is not the heaviest vehicle or the largest moving industrial structure, so the answer changes when a different measurement is used.
Is Bagger 293 bigger than Bagger 288?
For the Guinness categories of largest land vehicle and largest mobile industrial machine, Bagger 293 is the more defensible current record-holder at approximately 14,196 tonnes. Bagger 288 remains a famous predecessor and is still widely named in older articles.
Is Prelude FLNG the largest ship ever built?
No. Shell describes Prelude as the largest floating facility. It is a moored offshore gas-processing plant, not a conventional self-propelled ship. The historical Seawise Giant remains the key answer for the largest conventional ship by deadweight tonnage.
What is the difference between a mining truck’s payload and its weight?
Payload is the material the truck can carry. The BelAZ 75710 has a 450-metric-tonne payload, while its gross vehicle weight, including the truck itself and its load, is approximately 810 tonnes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs the Antonov An-225 still a current aircraft record-holder?
It remains the historical record-holder for heaviest aircraft ever built, with a published maximum takeoff weight of 640,000 kilograms. This article does not present older Antonov promotional material as evidence that the aircraft is currently flying.
The Bottom Line
There is no honest universal ranking of the world’s largest machines. The Large Hadron Collider is the leading answer for the largest single machine; Bagger 293 is the Guinness category leader among land vehicles; NASA’s Crawler-Transporter 2 is the heaviest self-powered vehicle; Prelude is the largest floating facility; Seawise Giant was the largest conventional ship by deadweight tonnage; and Roc, the An-225, the A380 and the C-5M lead different aircraft categories. The record only becomes meaningful when the measurement and the machine’s current status are stated alongside it.
