Consumer Reports does not currently publish a ranked list of the 15 most reliable American cars. Its latest automotive report evaluates reliability by brand and model, and the public results identify six U.S.-brand vehicles as above average or better—not 15 vehicles ranked from first to fifteenth.

That distinction matters because reliability is model-year-specific. A highly rated model can share a badge with a poorly rated one, and a vehicle assembled in the United States may carry a non-U.S. brand. Here is the defensible list from Consumer Reports’ latest reliability coverage, followed by the caveats shoppers should use before treating any car as a safe bet.

What Consumer Reports actually says

Consumer Reports’ latest applicable report is its 2026 Automotive Report Card, published December 4, 2025. The reliability predictions draw on member survey data covering roughly 380,000 vehicles, primarily from model years 2000 through 2025, with some early 2026 vehicles included.

CR assigns predicted-reliability ratings on a 1-to-100 scale. The survey covers 20 potential trouble areas, including engines, transmissions, batteries, electric motors, infotainment systems, climate controls, brakes, and suspension components.

U.S.-based brands averaged a predicted-reliability score of 41, below the averages for Asian and European brands. Buick was the highest-scoring domestic brand. Chrysler, GMC, Jeep, Ram, and Rivian were the five lowest-scoring brands in the report.

The six American-badge vehicles CR identifies as above average

These are the U.S.-brand models Consumer Reports specifically identifies as above average or better in the latest public report. They are not an official ranking from one to six.

Vehicle CR reliability assessment What to know
Tesla Model Y Well above average EV reliability includes electronics, charging, battery, electric-motor, climate, suspension, and braking issues—not just the absence of an engine or transmission.
Buick Envision Above average Do not extend this result to every Buick. The redesigned Enclave, for example, is below average.
Chevrolet Corvette Above average A performance car can still score well for predicted reliability, but ownership costs and repair prices are separate questions.
Chevrolet Trax Above average The rating applies to the relevant model years and should not automatically be applied to every Chevrolet crossover.
Ford Bronco Sport Above average Check the exact year, powertrain, and available equipment before buying used.
Ford Maverick Above average Verify whether the vehicle has the hybrid or turbocharged powertrain, since equipment and model-year changes can affect ownership.

Why there are not 15 vehicles on the list

Consumer Reports’ public article does not provide an official top-15 ranking of American-brand vehicles. Expanding the list to 15 and presenting the result as a Consumer Reports ranking would create a claim the source does not support.

Some other U.S.-brand models may receive an average reliability prediction, but “average” is not the same as “above average,” and the public report does not establish a defensible 1-to-15 order. A list padded with vehicles from older model years, different CR reports, or unrelated reliability surveys would not be a current Consumer Reports ranking.

American brand does not mean American-built

“American car” can mean at least two different things:

  1. American-brand vehicle: a vehicle sold under a U.S.-based marque such as Buick, Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Lincoln, Ram, Rivian, or Tesla.
  2. Vehicle assembled in the United States: a vehicle whose final assembly took place at a U.S. plant, regardless of the badge on its hood.

Those categories overlap, but they are not identical. A Chevrolet, Ford, or Tesla may be assembled in different countries depending on the model, factory, and model year. Honda and Subaru also sell vehicles assembled in the United States, even though they are not American brands.

For a particular vehicle, check the window sticker or the label on the driver-side doorjamb. The VIN can also help identify the manufacturing country; VINs beginning with 1, 4, or 5 indicate U.S. manufacture. That confirms the manufacturing location, not that most of the vehicle’s parts came from the United States.

Model-year warnings that can change the decision

Reliability ratings belong to a specific model year and configuration. Consumer Reports generally bases predictions for newer vehicles on recent history when the vehicle has not been significantly redesigned. That makes a proven pre-redesign model potentially different from the first year of a new generation.

CR advises caution with newly redesigned vehicles. Its current below-average or well-below-average examples include the Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac Optiq, Honda Prologue, Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid, Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Colorado, and GMC Canyon.

Several examples show why the badge alone is not enough:

  • The 2026 GMC Acadia is specifically among the least-reliable vehicles in the current coverage.
  • The 2026 Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse are below average after their 2024 redesigns, despite Buick’s strong brand-level position.
  • The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain received well-below-average predictions after their 2025 redesigns.
  • The 2026 Ram 1500 experienced reliability problems after updates.

These examples do not prove that every vehicle in a model line is bad. They show why a buyer should look up the exact year rather than rely on a brand reputation or an older review.

How to use the list when shopping

  1. Start with the exact model year. Do not assume the rating for a 2025 vehicle applies to a redesigned 2026 version.
  2. Check the powertrain. A hybrid, turbocharged engine, diesel, all-wheel-drive system, or performance package can introduce different components and failure points.
  3. Separate reliability from value. CR’s reliability prediction does not tell you insurance costs, fuel economy, depreciation, tire prices, or repair bills.
  4. Inspect used examples. Review maintenance records, scan for stored diagnostic codes, check recall completion, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.
  5. Confirm the assembly location separately. Use the window sticker, doorjamb label, or VIN if American assembly is part of your buying criteria.
  6. Compare CR’s other scores. Predicted reliability is not the same as CR’s Overall Score or a Top Pick designation. Overall Score also considers road-test performance, owner satisfaction, safety, and other factors.

Does an EV automatically have better reliability?

No. An EV has fewer engine and transmission components, but Consumer Reports evaluates many other systems. Battery packs, charging equipment, electric motors, software, infotainment, climate controls, suspension, and brakes can all create problems.

The Tesla Model Y’s well-above-average prediction is therefore useful, but it should not be turned into a general claim that every EV is more reliable than every gasoline vehicle. The rating applies to that model and its surveyed history.

Bottom line on the “15 most reliable” claim

The current Consumer Reports data supports six above-average or better American-brand standouts: Tesla Model Y, Buick Envision, Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Trax, Ford Bronco Sport, and Ford Maverick. It does not support an official list of 15 ranked American cars.

For buyers, the most important qualification is the model year. A strong brand average cannot rescue a newly redesigned vehicle with a poor prediction, and an American badge does not prove U.S. assembly. Use the six vehicles as a starting point, then verify the precise year, powertrain, manufacturing location, and vehicle history before signing a contract.

FAQ

Does Consumer Reports rank the 15 most reliable American cars?

No. Consumer Reports’ latest public reliability coverage does not publish an official ranked list of 15 American-brand vehicles. It specifically identifies six U.S.-brand models as above average or better.

What are the most reliable American-brand vehicles in the latest CR report?

The six identified standouts are the Tesla Model Y, Buick Envision, Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Trax, Ford Bronco Sport, and Ford Maverick.

Is Buick a reliable American car brand?

Buick was the highest-scoring domestic brand in the latest report, but the brand result does not apply equally to every model. The Envision is above average, while the redesigned 2026 Enclave is below average.

How can I tell whether an American-brand car was built in the United States?

Check the vehicle’s window sticker, driver-side doorjamb label, or VIN. VINs beginning with 1, 4, or 5 indicate U.S. manufacture, although that does not establish that most parts were sourced domestically.

The Bottom Line

The accurate answer is six, not 15. Consumer Reports’ latest public reliability report identifies the Tesla Model Y, Buick Envision, Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Trax, Ford Bronco Sport, and Ford Maverick as above average or better among U.S.-brand vehicles. Treat the rating as model-year-specific, and do not confuse an American badge with U.S. assembly.
