No car can honestly be promised to “never break down.” Every vehicle has wear items, recalls, software glitches, and components that can fail. But some models have substantially better reliability evidence than their rivals.
The 13 cars below combine the latest Consumer Reports predicted-reliability rankings with model-level recognition from J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. The two sources measure different things, so the list is not a guarantee. It is a practical shortlist of vehicles with unusually strong reliability data.

How these reliability ratings should be read
Consumer Reports’ latest ranking is based on survey data from approximately 380,000 vehicles, covering model years 2000 through 2025 along with some early 2026 vehicles. Its predicted-reliability score estimates how many problems a new vehicle is likely to have compared with competing models. CR requires at least two years of data before assigning a predicted-reliability score.

J.D. Power’s 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study uses a different measurement. It surveyed 33,268 owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership and reports problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100. A lower PP100 score is better.

That distinction matters. A high Consumer Reports score is a prediction for a current model, while a J.D. Power award is based on the ownership experience of an earlier model year. Treat both as evidence, not a mechanical guarantee.
13 reliable cars worth considering
1. 2026 Subaru Impreza
The Subaru Impreza ranked first in Consumer Reports’ 2026 predicted-reliability list. It is also one of the few compact cars that includes all-wheel drive as standard equipment.
The Impreza’s hatchback body provides useful cargo space without requiring a larger SUV, and it combines reasonable fuel economy with good handling. Its relatively straightforward powertrain is another advantage for buyers who want to avoid the added complexity of a new or heavily redesigned vehicle.
Best for: Buyers who want standard all-wheel drive in an affordable compact hatchback.
2. 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross
The Corolla Cross placed second in Consumer Reports’ ranking. It offers a higher seating position than a standard Corolla, easy entry and exit, competitive fuel economy, and a relatively accessible price.
Buyers should check the exact configuration. The gasoline Corolla Cross and Corolla Cross Hybrid use different powertrains, and reliability data for one version should not automatically be applied to the other. Confirm the model year, drivetrain, and recall status before buying.
Best for: Drivers who want a small crossover with simple dimensions and Toyota’s strong reliability track record.
3. 2026 Subaru Crosstrek
The Crosstrek ranked third overall in Consumer Reports’ latest list. Standard all-wheel drive, useful ground clearance, good outward visibility, and a comfortable ride make it a practical choice for buyers who regularly deal with poor weather or rough roads.
The Crosstrek’s result should not be taken as proof that every Subaru is equally reliable. Reliability varies by model and generation; for example, Consumer Reports’ latest data does not place the larger Ascent in the same category as the Impreza and Crosstrek.
Best for: Buyers who need a small, comfortable crossover with light off-road ability.
4. 2026 Toyota Crown
The Toyota Crown ranked fourth. It delivers a raised seating position, a smooth ride, strong fuel economy, easy cabin access, and a roomy trunk in a sedan-like package.

- The different model year spans involved: 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024.
The main caution is its shorter history compared with long-established Toyota models. A brand reputation cannot replace a model-year check, especially with a relatively newer nameplate. Review complaints, recalls, warranty coverage, and the specific hybrid system used in the car you are considering.
Best for: Drivers who want comfort and efficiency without moving to a conventional SUV.
5. 2026 Toyota Corolla
The Corolla remains one of the safest reliability bets in the compact-car class and ranked fifth in Consumer Reports’ 2026 list. Its strengths include good fuel economy, a comfortable ride, and controls that are generally easier to operate than the systems in many newer vehicles.
Do not assume that every Corolla generation is identical. Check the particular year for recalls, transmission complaints, oil-consumption concerns, and maintenance requirements. A reliable model can still become expensive when neglected or purchased with a poor service history.
Best for: Commuters seeking low running costs and uncomplicated daily transportation.
6. 2026 Toyota Tacoma
Consumer Reports ranked the Tacoma sixth and cited its durability, intuitive controls, and off-road capability. J.D. Power also gave the Tacoma a 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study segment award.
There is an important generation break. The Tacoma was redesigned for 2024, and Consumer Reports says its predicted reliability improved from below average to above average in the latest survey. Earlier Tacomas and the redesigned truck should therefore be evaluated separately.
As with any pickup, repair costs can rise when the truck is used for towing, hauling, deep off-road driving, or frequent short trips. Inspect the frame, suspension, underbody, and service records on used examples.

Best for: Buyers who need a midsize pickup with genuine off-road and towing capability.
7. 2026 Honda Accord
The Accord placed seventh in Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability ranking. It combines a spacious cabin, smooth ride, responsive handling, and relatively easy-to-use controls.
The current U.S. Accord lineup is hybrid-only. That means older gasoline-powered Accord reliability data should not automatically be transferred to the latest model. Check the hybrid battery warranty, recall history, and maintenance schedule for the specific car.

8. 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid
The Grand Highlander Hybrid ranked eighth and is one of the more practical three-row vehicles in this group. It provides useful passenger and cargo space while delivering better fuel economy than many similarly sized gas-only SUVs.
Consumer Reports’ broader reliability analysis found conventional hybrids averaged fewer problems than gas-only vehicles. That does not mean every hybrid is trouble-free, and it should not be confused with plug-in-hybrid or EV reliability data. The Grand Highlander is also a relatively recent model, so buyers should pay close attention to model-year-specific reports.
Best for: Families needing three rows and cargo room without accepting the fuel consumption of a large gas SUV.
9. 2026 Toyota Highlander
The Highlander ranked ninth in Consumer Reports’ list. It offers a comfortable ride, easy access, and a spacious second row, making it a sensible family crossover for long-distance travel.

Best for: Buyers who want a comfortable midsize family SUV with a strong reliability record.
10. 2026 Lexus NX
The Lexus NX rounded out Consumer Reports’ 10 most reliable 2026 models. It earned credit for interior quality, braking performance, and overall refinement.
Lexus also ranked highest among premium brands in J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability study. However, J.D. Power found that premium vehicles as a group had more reported problems than mass-market vehicles. Luxury equipment, advanced electronics, and higher parts costs can make even a dependable premium SUV more expensive to repair.

The IS is a useful choice for shoppers who want a compact luxury sedan with model-level dependability evidence. Before buying a used example, verify that scheduled services were completed and check for accident damage, modified suspension parts, and neglected fluid changes.
Best for: Buyers seeking a sportier luxury sedan with strong three-year dependability results.
12. Toyota Sienna
The Toyota Sienna received a J.D. Power model-level dependability award in the minivan segment. That gives it unusually relevant evidence for families who need sliding doors, three-row seating, and practical cargo access.
The current Sienna uses a hybrid powertrain, so buyers should inspect the hybrid system warranty and service history rather than assuming every older Toyota minivan has identical mechanical characteristics. A used Sienna should also be checked for extensive family use, interior damage, and frequent towing or overloading.
Best for: Families who need maximum passenger practicality and want a hybrid minivan.
13. Toyota 4Runner
The 4Runner received a J.D. Power model-level award in the midsize SUV segment. It remains one of the few options for buyers who specifically want a body-on-frame SUV with serious trail capability.

Reliability is not the same as reaching 200,000 miles
A vehicle can reach 200,000 miles with a long list of repairs, or fail to reach that mileage because its owners did not maintain it. Consumer Reports’ long-lasting-vehicle research shows that service history and repair spending remain decisive.

New generations are harder to judge
All-new and recently redesigned vehicles have less real-world data. New engines, transmissions, electrical architectures, and infotainment systems can introduce problems that do not appear during initial testing.
The Tacoma and 4Runner illustrate why model-year precision matters. Their current generations cannot be judged solely by the history of their predecessors.
Technology problems count too
J.D. Power reports that infotainment was the most problematic category in its 2026 study. Smartphone integration, Bluetooth, wireless charging, and automaker-app connectivity were among the common trouble areas.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA vehicle may be mechanically dependable while still requiring software updates, replacement sensors, or dealer visits for technology faults. During a test drive, pair your phone, test the cameras and driver-assistance features, operate the climate controls, and check that the displays start normally.
Hybrid does not automatically mean more reliable
Consumer Reports found that conventional hybrids averaged fewer problems than gas-only vehicles in its latest analysis, while EVs and plug-in hybrids averaged substantially more problems. J.D. Power’s study produced a different order, with gas vehicles reporting the fewest problems followed by hybrids and then EVs and plug-in hybrids.
These findings use different samples, vehicle ages, and methods. They do not prove that every hybrid is more dependable than every gasoline vehicle. Evaluate each powertrain and model year independently.
How to choose the lowest-risk example
- Identify the exact model year and powertrain. A rating for a 2026 hybrid may not apply to a 2022 gas model or a vehicle from a previous generation.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall database or a manufacturer’s owner portal, then confirm that completed repairs are documented.
- Review the service schedule. Oil changes, brake-fluid replacement, transmission service, coolant intervals, and hybrid-system inspections should match the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Budget for ordinary maintenance. Tires, brakes, batteries, belts, wiper components, and suspension parts are not reliability failures, but they still cost money.
- Test every electronic feature. Confirm that the infotainment system, cameras, sensors, Bluetooth, charging ports, air conditioning, and driver-assistance features work correctly.
- Get an independent inspection. A pre-purchase inspection can identify leaks, accident repairs, rust, worn suspension parts, and neglected maintenance before you buy.

Does a reliable car really never break down?
No. Reliability ratings are statistical predictions or reports of problems among surveyed owners. Even highly rated vehicles need maintenance and can experience recalls, wear-related repairs, electronic faults, or unexpected failures.
Are Toyota and Lexus the most reliable brands?
Toyota and Lexus perform strongly in the latest reliability evidence, but brand averages do not apply equally to every model or generation. Check the specific year, powertrain, recalls, and service history.
Which reliability rating is better: Consumer Reports or J.D. Power?
Neither is universally better. Consumer Reports predicts reliability for newer models using owner surveys, while J.D. Power measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles. Their methods answer different questions.
The Bottom Line
The Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla Cross, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Crown, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Tacoma, Honda Accord, Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid, Toyota Highlander, Lexus NX, Lexus IS, Toyota Sienna, and Toyota 4Runner all have meaningful reliability evidence behind them. None is failure-proof.
The safest purchase is the one matched to your needs, bought in a well-documented model year, checked for recalls, and maintained on schedule. Exact configuration and ownership history matter more than simply choosing a familiar badge.
