Routine maintenance can help prevent avoidable breakdowns, but no checklist can prevent every expensive repair. The right schedule, fluid specifications, tire pressure, rotation pattern, and replacement-part fit depend on your vehicle and driving conditions. Start with the owner’s manual; use these 13 checks to catch issues early without treating generic mileage advice as a substitute for the manufacturer’s schedule.

1. Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual

Use the schedule for your exact vehicle, including its engine and drivetrain, and account for any severe-service conditions the manual identifies. It governs items such as oil changes, inspections, and fluid or filter service. A shop may recommend more frequent service, but ask what condition or manufacturer guidance supports the recommendation before approving extra work. The FTC notes that neglecting routine maintenance can contribute to poor fuel economy, unreliability, costly breakdowns, and may affect warranty coverage: FTC: Auto Repair Basics.

2. Check tire pressure monthly, when tires are cold

Use the pressure on the driver-door placard or in the owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall. NHTSA defines cold tires as tires on a vehicle that has not been driven for at least three hours. Check all tires at least monthly, including the spare, with a reliable pressure gauge; adjust to the vehicle’s specified pressure. A tire-pressure monitoring system is useful, but a gauge lets you check pressure before a warning appears. NHTSA says the warning may activate only when a tire is significantly underinflated. See NHTSA TireWise.

3. Inspect the spare and tire sidewalls

Look for cuts, bulges, cracks, embedded objects, or other visible damage on each tire, including the spare. Check the spare’s pressure as well. Do not assume a damaged tire is safe because it still holds air; ask a tire professional to assess damage or recommend replacement. NHTSA’s summer driving guidance also advises checking tires before a trip.

4. Check tread depth and uneven wear

NHTSA advises replacing tires when tread reaches 2/32 inch. Its penny test is a quick screen: place a penny in a tread groove with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, the tread is too shallow and the tire should be replaced. This check does not assess all tire damage, so have a professional inspect a tire with unusual wear or visible defects. NHTSA reports 511 deaths in tire-related crashes in 2024; its tire page also estimates that proper inflation can extend average tire life by 4,700 miles and save up to 11 cents per gallon in fuel. Those are NHTSA figures, not guaranteed outcomes for every driver or tire. Source: NHTSA TireWise.

5. Rotate tires as your vehicle’s manual directs

Rotation patterns and intervals vary. Follow the owner’s manual rather than applying a universal mileage rule. Some vehicles have different-sized front and rear tires that may not be suitable for rotation. If wear is uneven, ask a tire professional whether rotation, balancing, alignment, or another diagnosis is appropriate; rotation alone may not address the cause.

6. Check engine oil and change it on schedule

Check the level and condition as directed in the manual, using the specified procedure and dipstick if equipped. Add only oil that meets the vehicle’s required specification. Change the oil and filter at the vehicle-specific interval; do not rely on a single mileage figure for every car. If the oil-pressure warning appears, respond immediately rather than assuming a routine oil check will resolve it.

7. Check applicable fluids

Use the manual to identify which fluids your vehicle has, how to check them safely, and which specifications to use. Depending on the vehicle, checks may include brake fluid, transmission or clutch fluid, hydraulic power-steering fluid, and windshield-washer fluid. Some systems are sealed or require a specific service procedure. Do not top up with an unspecified fluid or open a system you are not equipped to service.

8. Check coolant only as directed and address leaks

Follow the manual’s procedure for checking coolant and use the specified type. Never open a hot, pressurized coolant system: hot fluid can cause severe burns. If you notice a coolant leak, a rising temperature gauge, or repeated low-coolant warnings, stop when it is safe and arrange professional diagnosis rather than repeatedly topping up without finding the cause.

9. Have the battery and charging system checked when needed

Slow cranking, dimming lights, or repeated difficulty starting can have several causes, including a weak battery or a charging-system problem. Have the system tested rather than replacing a part based on one symptom. A battery inspection is also sensible when starting behavior changes or the vehicle has been sitting for a long period.

11. Inspect wiper blades and washer fluid

Choose blades that fit the vehicle; dimensions and attachment styles vary. NHTSA recommends checking wiper blades and carrying extra washer fluid for a road trip: NHTSA summer driving tips.

12. Replace engine and cabin filters on the vehicle’s schedule

Check the manual for the service interval and the correct filter for your vehicle. The engine air filter and cabin air filter serve different purposes, and their replacement timing can vary with driving conditions. A generic “fits most” listing is not enough to confirm fitment; match the part to the vehicle and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance. AAA includes filters among routine maintenance items: AAA Automotive maintenance tips.

13. Act promptly on warnings, brake symptoms, and new leaks

Do not ignore warning lights, especially an oil-pressure or engine warning. Stop safely and consult the manual for the warning’s meaning and the required response; if the vehicle may be unsafe to drive, arrange assistance. Grinding brakes, pulling while braking, or a pedal that sinks also warrant prompt professional diagnosis. A leak or new noise may have multiple causes, so ask a qualified technician to identify the problem before authorizing a replacement based only on a symptom. The FTC explains how to approach auto repairs and estimates at Auto Repair Basics. AAA Club Alliance’s June 12, 2026 maintenance guidance quotes automotive value specialist Luke Oswald urging drivers to check engine or oil-pressure warnings right away: AAA Club Alliance: The Ultimate Car Maintenance Schedule for Beginners.

Keep a few basic safety checks in your routine

Before a trip, confirm that floor mats are correctly fitted and secured. NHTSA also recommends carrying roadside items such as jumper cables, a tire-pressure gauge, a jack, and extra washer fluid. These are preparedness measures, not replacements for scheduled maintenance or professional repair when a fault appears. See NHTSA summer driving tips.
