This is a practical 12-model shortlist—not an audited worldwide sales ranking, because Harley-Davidson publishes retail totals by geography rather than model-by-model global unit sales.

Why Street Glide and Road Glide have the clearest recent momentum
Harley-Davidson redesigned the Street Glide and Road Glide and said those launches helped produce nearly 5% growth in the U.S. Touring segment in 2024. CEO Jochen Zeitz said the two motorcycles “contributed to nearly 5% growth in the U.S. Touring segment and drove H-D’s market share to 74.5% in ’24.” The company also reported more than 8% North American retail-sales growth across Touring, Trike and CVO categories in 2024.
Street Glide
The FLHX is the natural choice when your priority is a full touring experience: sustained highway travel, weather and wind management, passenger use and luggage. Its fairing-and-bagger format is more substantial than the Softail models, so it makes the most sense for riders who regularly cover distance rather than mainly commuting or cruising locally.
#1 Best Overall
- Collectible quality True-to-scale detailed vehicle
- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Officially licensed Harley Davidson product by Maisto International
- Highly-detailed die-cast precision model for collectible or play
- Detailed die-cast precision model
Road Glide
The FLTRX serves the same Grand American Touring mission with a frame-mounted fairing. That gives it a different steering and airflow feel from the Street Glide, which uses a fork-mounted fairing design. A test ride is the best way to decide between them, because the distinction is physical rather than a simple equipment ranking.
The classic Softail and touring-cruiser choices
Fat Boy
The Fat Boy is one of Harley-Davidson’s most recognizable cruiser names. Its appeal is visual presence and relaxed cruising rather than maximum luggage capacity. Buyers should distinguish the current FLFB designation from historical FLSTF and Fat Boy 114 references when researching used motorcycles, accessories or service information.
Road King
The FLHR is the shortlist’s long-running, explicitly popular touring model. It offers a more open riding experience than a fully faired bagger, making it a useful compromise for riders who want touring ability without the visual and cockpit enclosure of a Street Glide or Road Glide.
Recommended Free Tools
Heritage Classic
The FLHC and FLHCS combine Softail cruiser styling with equipment suited to occasional touring. It is a strong fit for riders who want passenger usability and weekend luggage without moving to a full-size Grand American Touring motorcycle.
Breakout
The FXBR/FXSB is a style-led, low-slung cruiser. Its strengths are presence, relaxed solo riding and customization potential; its limited standard wind protection and luggage make it less suitable for repeated long-distance travel.

Performance-focused Softails
Low Rider S
The FXLRS emphasizes a more aggressive, responsive cruiser experience. It suits riders who want a Softail platform for spirited road riding and do not need integrated touring luggage or a large fairing.
Low Rider ST
The FXLRST keeps the Low Rider family’s performance-cruiser intent while adding more practical sport-touring equipment. It is the better fit than the Low Rider S when regular day trips or overnight rides matter but a full bagger feels excessive.

Street Bob
The FXBB and FXBBS are minimalist Softails aimed at straightforward everyday riding. Their simpler equipment can make them easier to personalize, but buyers planning touring should budget for the specific luggage, passenger and wind-protection accessories they need.
Modern Sportster models
Sportster S
The RH1250S is the sport-focused option in this group. Its compact format and performance-oriented intent favor solo road use, urban riding and enthusiastic cornering over two-up touring or carrying large loads.
Nightster
The RH975 and RH975S Nightster Special bring a smaller, modern sport-cruiser format to the lineup. They are sensible candidates for riders who want a more manageable motorcycle than a touring model, while still preferring Harley-Davidson styling and sound.

Pan America 1250 Special
The RA1250S is the adventure-touring choice. Unlike the road-focused motorcycles above, it is intended for trips that can include unpaved surfaces as well as pavement. Actual carrying capacity, protection and off-road readiness depend on the selected luggage and accessory configuration, so compare the exact motorcycle and equipment package rather than relying on the family name alone.
Choosing the right Harley for your use
For the best touring setup
Choose Street Glide or Road Glide for maximum integrated touring capability. Choose Road King if you prefer a more open cockpit, or Heritage Classic if your touring is occasional and you want a smaller Softail footprint.
For everyday cruising
Fat Boy, Heritage Classic and Street Bob cover the broadest everyday-cruiser needs. The decision is mainly between visual style, passenger requirements, standard equipment and how much accessory luggage you expect to add.
For spirited road riding
Low Rider S and Low Rider ST are the focused Softail choices. Sportster S is the more overtly sport-oriented alternative in a compact format.
For adventure travel
Pan America 1250 Special is the relevant choice when mixed-surface travel is part of the plan. None of the conventional touring or Softail models is a substitute for an adventure-touring chassis and riding position.

For a first Harley
There is no universal beginner model. A first-time buyer should match seat reach, weight at low speed, passenger needs, highway exposure and confidence during a dealer test ride. Smaller, less heavily equipped models can be easier to manage, while a touring model may be the right first Harley for someone whose priority is two-up distance riding.
Sales context: popularity without a model ranking
Harley-Davidson reported worldwide retail sales of 178,451 motorcycles in 2022, 162,771 in 2023, 151,229 in 2024 and 132,535 in 2025. These are company-wide totals, not sales for any one model. Harley-Davidson’s retail table says the figures come from dealer-supplied warranty and registration information and may be revised.
The company also reported 148,862 global motorcycle shipments in 2024. Shipments and retail sales measure different stages of the business, so they should not be treated as interchangeable popularity rankings.
Check the model year before buying parts or a used bike
- Record the motorcycle’s complete model name, model year and alpha-numeric code.
- Use that code when checking Harley-Davidson parts, accessories and service information.
- Confirm whether a listing is for a current motorcycle or a historical designation such as FLSTF or Fat Boy 114.
- Ask a Harley-Davidson dealer or authorized service department to verify fitment before ordering expensive or safety-critical parts.
- For a new motorcycle, compare the exact trim, available equipment, local inventory, financing terms and insurance quote; these vary by market and can change.
What “best resale value” means here
The available company material does not establish a model-by-model resale-value ranking. Condition, mileage, service records, modifications, accident history, location, demand and model year can outweigh the badge. Compare several local used listings for the same code and year, and have the motorcycle inspected before treating an asking price as market value.

Buying checklist
- Decide whether your riding is mainly touring, commuting, cruising, sport riding or adventure travel.
- Estimate how often you will carry a passenger and luggage.

- Verify model-year code fitment for every accessory or replacement part.
- Price scheduled service, tires, insurance and any luggage or comfort upgrades—not only the motorcycle.
