Before buying a Honda Pilot, match the exact model year, trim, drivetrain and seating layout to your needs—and check the VIN for open recalls. The 2026 U.S. Pilot is a three-row V6 SUV, but its seat count, fuel economy and towing rating vary by configuration. Used buyers should pay particular attention to a safety recall covering certain 2016–2022 Pilots and arrange an independent inspection.
1. Confirm the model year before comparing specifications
The figures below describe the 2026 U.S.-market Pilot, not every Pilot sold in earlier years or other countries. Engine, transmission, safety equipment, infotainment and recall status can differ by year. When comparing used vehicles, check the exact year and VIN rather than assuming current specifications carry over.
Honda lists a 3.5-liter V6 and 10-speed automatic for the 2026 model. Its trim and drivetrain combinations also affect seating, fuel-economy ratings and towing capacity.
2. Choose the drivetrain that fits your use
For 2026, Sport and EX-L are listed with either 2WD or AWD; TrailSport, Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite and Black Edition are listed with AWD. AWD is therefore not standard on every trim. Consider the conditions you drive in and compare the specific vehicle’s equipment rather than relying on a trim name alone.

3. Check the actual seating layout
Honda lists seven seats for the 2026 TrailSport and eight for Sport, EX-L, Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite and Black Edition. EX-L and trims from Touring upward have a removable second-row middle seat listed; Sport and TrailSport do not. Verify the actual vehicle, especially if shopping used.
If you regularly carry children or third-row passengers, bring the child seats you use and test installation, second-row access and third-row space in the specific Pilot. A published seat count does not establish that a particular family’s seats or passengers will fit comfortably.
4. Compare fuel economy using the matching configuration
Honda publishes these EPA ratings for the 2026 U.S. Pilot. They are ratings, not a promise of real-world fuel use.

For a used Pilot, consult the information for its own model year and configuration. Tire condition and maintenance history are also worth considering when evaluating a particular vehicle.
5. Match towing capacity to the exact Pilot and trailer
Honda lists 3,500 pounds of towing capacity for 2026 2WD Sport and EX-L, and 5,000 pounds for AWD trims. These are manufacturer-published ratings, not a substitute for checking the vehicle’s owner’s manual and equipment. Confirm the exact vehicle’s limits and the trailer’s loaded weight before towing.
6. Read safety ratings by test and model year
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) designates the 2026 Pilot a Top Safety Pick, but that award does not mean every individual test received a Good rating. IIHS reports Good ratings for small-overlap front tests and the updated side test, while the updated moderate-overlap front test is rated Acceptable for 2025–2026 models. Applicability varies by test; review the IIHS Pilot ratings for the year you are considering.

IIHS also lists Good headlights and Good pedestrian front-crash prevention for 2024–2026 models, plus a Good+ LATCH ease-of-use rating for 2023–2026. Its moderate-overlap page notes that second-row seat-belt changes began with 2025 models to improve occupant protection in that test. Check the rating for the specific model year rather than transferring a result across years.
7. Treat driver-assistance features as assistance
Honda says Honda Sensing is standard across 2026 Pilot trims. Listed features include collision mitigation braking, lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition and blind-spot information. These systems support the driver; they do not replace attention or safe driving. On a used vehicle, confirm which features are fitted and functioning rather than assuming a current-year equipment list applies.
8. Check the major rear-subframe recall on eligible used vehicles
NHTSA recall 26V365, dated June 9, 2026, covers certain 2016–2022 Honda Pilots sold in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia or Wisconsin. The notice says corrosion may affect rear-subframe suspension mounting points, potentially leading to rear-suspension component failure and loss of handling or control.

The recall remedy is a dealer inspection, installation of a reinforcement kit and, if needed, repair or replacement, at no cost. The notice estimates 880,514 potentially affected vehicles across the Honda and Acura models named in the campaign; that figure is not the number of Pilots alone. See the NHTSA recall notice.
Ask the seller for documentation that the remedy was completed, then confirm the status with a Honda dealer. This campaign applies to specified vehicles, not every 2016–2022 Pilot.

Use the NHTSA VIN recall lookup for the vehicle you are considering. NHTSA notes that its lookup may not yet reflect a manufacturer-posted recall, so ask a Honda dealer to verify campaign status and completed repairs too. A clear lookup is not a mechanical condition report.

10. Make a used Pilot earn your confidence
A recall notice identifies a defined safety campaign; it does not establish that every affected vehicle has failed or that other years are trouble-free. The available evidence does not support a blanket reliability ranking by model year. Judge an individual used Pilot on its records, condition and inspection results.
- Request maintenance and repair records, plus accident and title history.
- Check the VIN for recalls and obtain proof of completed campaign work.
- Have an independent mechanic inspect the underside, rear subframe and suspension, paying attention to corrosion where exposure is plausible.
- Arrange a diagnostic scan and independent pre-purchase inspection before committing.
- Verify the exact year’s engine, transmission, safety equipment and features rather than applying 2026 specifications to an older vehicle.
11. Verify new-car benefits and accessories by vehicle
For an eligible new 2026 Pilot, Honda lists Service Pass coverage for the first year or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. It includes the first factory-scheduled maintenance and names oil and filter service, tire rotation and a multi-point inspection. Confirm eligibility and terms at purchase; do not assume a used vehicle inherits this benefit.
If cargo organization matters, Honda lists a Pilot cargo organizer and folding cargo tray. Check year and trim fitment before buying, especially for used vehicles; Honda cautions that accessories fit only select models and trims. The Honda accessories page lists available items.
