What Honda has actually announced
Honda announced on January 27, 2009, that production of the S2000 for all regions would conclude by the end of June that year. The company described it as an open, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car. Honda also reported more than 110,000 worldwide sales through the end of December 2008; that is a dated sales figure, not a final lifetime total. Honda’s 2009 production announcement.

What the “S” comment means—and what it doesn’t
In a Honda interview published in December 2024, Masayuki Togawa, identified as the designer responsible for S2000 packaging, discussed the car’s open body, driving performance, and safety and environmental requirements of its time. He also spoke about the compact, lightweight packaging and two-seat, front-engine, rear-drive convertible character.

Togawa added: “Therefore, if the ‘S’ name is going to make an appearance in the future, I hope it will show up as a car that is steps ahead of its time.” That is his expressed hope for a possible future “S” car—not a statement that Honda has approved, designed or is developing an S2000 successor. Does Honda’s 2026 business briefing announce a new S2000?
No. Honda’s May 14, 2026 business briefing describes a three-year automobile-business rebuilding effort and product priorities that include next-generation hybrids beginning in 2027; it does not name a new S2000. What remains unknown about a successor
The official sources reviewed do not provide a successor’s release date, price, production specification or performance figures. Treat online claims about a 2026 model’s horsepower, engine, styling, price or launch timing as speculation unless Honda publishes an actual product announcement. A render can illustrate an artist’s idea, but it cannot establish Honda’s design or plans.
If Honda announces a successor, the meaningful comparison with the original will be more than a resemblance in styling. Look for confirmed details on body style and layout, driving character, powertrain, weight and packaging, safety and emissions compliance, price and intended markets. None of those successor specifications can be responsibly filled in now.
