10 Reasons We’d Pick the 2025 Honda CB750 Hornet Over the Yamaha MT-07

The 2025 Honda CB750 Hornet wins our U.S. comparison against the Yamaha MT-07 on price, displacement, seat height, standard equipment, and performance-per-dollar—while acknowledging where Yamaha fights back.

We would pick the 2025 Honda CB750 Hornet over the Yamaha MT-07 for a U.S. buyer. The Honda starts $600 lower, uses a larger 755cc twin, has a lower published seat, and includes a quickshifter, TFT connectivity, ride modes, and a strong front-end specification. The Yamaha remains an excellent—and lighter—alternative for riders who value its CP2 engine character and MT design.

For a U.S. buyer shopping the 2025 models, we would pick the Honda CB750 Hornet over the Yamaha MT-07. Honda asks $7,999 before destination, compared with $8,599 for the Yamaha, yet gives the buyer a larger engine, lower published seat, standard quickshifter, a five-inch TFT with RoadSync connectivity, ride modes, and a high-spec front end.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That does not make the MT-07 a bad motorcycle. Yamaha’s 2025 update adds an electronic throttle, riding modes, switchable traction control, an inverted fork, radial front calipers, lighter SpinForged wheels, and a five-inch TFT. Its listed 403-pound wet weight is also substantially below Honda’s 422-pound curb weight. The Yamaha may be the better personal choice for someone who prioritizes low mass or the distinctive character of Yamaha’s CP2 engine. But on the specific question of performance, standard equipment, accessibility, and price, the Hornet makes the stronger case.

The figures do not tell the whole story. Honda’s weight is listed as curb weight while Yamaha’s is listed as wet weight, so the 19-pound difference should not be treated as a laboratory-perfect comparison. Likewise, displacement alone does not prove which motorcycle is quicker in every situation. What the specifications do show is why Honda is the more convincing value for this particular brief.

10 reasons we would pick the 2025 Honda CB750 Hornet

  1. 1. The Hornet starts $600 cheaper in the U.S.

Honda lists the 2025 CB750 Hornet at a $7,999 base MSRP. Yamaha lists the 2025 MT-07 at $8,599. That gives the Honda a $600 advantage before either motorcycle reaches the road.

Both manufacturers separately list a $600 destination charge. In simple terms, the published figures become $8,599 for the Honda and $9,199 for the Yamaha before sales tax, registration, title fees, dealer documentation charges, options, and other local costs. The Honda is not necessarily $600 cheaper out the door at every dealership, but it starts with a meaningful advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prospective buyers should compare itemized out-the-door quotes rather than assuming MSRP is the final transaction price. Inventory, freight treatment, dealer fees, and incentives can change the gap.

Before visiting a dealership, it is sensible to find a Honda CB750 Hornet dealer and request a written quote that separates MSRP, destination, setup, documentation, and government fees.

  2. 2. The 755cc twin provides more performance headroom

The Honda uses a 755cc liquid-cooled parallel twin with Unicam valve gear, while the Yamaha uses a 689cc twin. That 66cc difference is not a guarantee that the Hornet will win every roll-on, drag race, or independent test. Gearing, throttle calibration, rider weight, traction, and the engine’s state of tune all matter.

It is still a legitimate specification-based advantage. The Honda begins with more displacement and is designed as the larger-capacity motorcycle in this comparison. For highway passing, riding with luggage, or simply wanting more room to grow into the motorcycle, the Hornet has the clearer paper case for performance potential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

We would describe this as more performance headroom rather than claim a specific acceleration result. The supplied comparison does not establish independent test times or dyno figures.

  3. 3. Honda gives the Hornet the lower published seat

Honda lists a 31.3-inch seat height for the CB750 Hornet. Yamaha lists the MT-07 at 31.7 inches. A 0.4-inch difference is small, but it is still in Honda’s favor on the specification sheet.

Seat height is not the same as reach to the ground. Seat width, foam shape, suspension sag, rider inseam, boots, and technique can all change how manageable a motorcycle feels at a stop. We would not promise that every shorter rider will find the Honda easier.

For a rider moving from a smaller motorcycle, however, the Hornet combines the lower published seat with a conventional naked-bike riding position and electronic aids. That combination makes it more approachable than its 755cc displacement might suggest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. 4. The standard equipment package is unusually complete for the price

The Hornet’s value is not based only on engine size. Honda lists customizable riding modes, a five-inch TFT instrument display, Honda RoadSync connectivity, ABS, and a quickshifter as standard equipment.

The quickshifter is especially important to the comparison. Honda presents it as equipment for clutchless upshifts under power, which gives the motorcycle a feature normally associated with more expensive or heavily optioned machines. The claim should not be stretched into saying it automatically improves every rider’s shifts, and this comparison does not establish whether it supports clutchless downshifts.

The result is a motorcycle that feels well equipped before the buyer starts adding accessories. Yamaha has also brought its electronics package substantially forward for 2025, so Honda’s advantage is the combination of equipment and lower price—not the claim that Yamaha is technologically bare.

  5. 5. Its fork and front brakes make a strong value case

Honda specifies a 41mm inverted Showa SFF-BP fork and dual 296mm front discs with radial-mounted four-piston calipers and ABS. Those are serious components for a motorcycle with a $7,999 base MSRP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important qualification: the 2025 MT-07 is not using bargain-basement running gear. Yamaha adds a 41mm inverted fork, radial four-piston front calipers, ABS, and SpinForged wheels. The MT-07 deserves credit for that update.

Honda therefore wins this reason as a value argument, not as a claim that Yamaha lacks capable hardware. The Hornet pairs comparable-looking performance-oriented front-end equipment with a lower starting price and a standard quickshifter.

  6. 6. Independent road impressions describe the Honda as composed and confidence-inspiring

Rider Magazine’s road evaluation described the CB750 Hornet as more composed and less twitchy than the MT-07. Cycle Gear characterized the Honda as nimble, practical, and fun-loving.

Those are tester impressions, not objective measurements or guarantees for every rider. Chassis feel depends on pace, road surface, suspension setup, tires, rider input, and personal preference. Some riders may actively prefer the livelier feel associated with the Yamaha.

Still, the attributed reviews support Honda’s broader appeal: it appears to deliver a manageable naked-bike experience without feeling like a motorcycle the owner will outgrow quickly.

  7. 7. The Hornet looks like the better performance-per-dollar proposition

Performance-per-dollar is where the comparison becomes more than a displacement contest. For $7,999, the Honda combines the 755cc engine, quickshifter, TFT connectivity, customizable ride modes, Showa SFF-BP fork, and radial four-piston front brakes.

The Yamaha answers with its own strong list: a 403-pound wet weight, the updated CP2 engine package, YCC-T electronic throttle, YRC riding modes, switchable traction control, a five-inch TFT, smartphone connectivity, an acoustic amplification system, an inverted fork, radial front calipers, and SpinForged wheels.

So the Honda does not offer more technology in every category. Its advantage is the blend of performance-oriented hardware, useful standard features, and a $600 lower base MSRP. If those are the buyer’s priorities, the Hornet returns more compelling equipment for the initial spend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  8. 8. It is an obvious step-up option for a rider leaving a smaller bike

The Hornet has enough engine and chassis capacity to remain interesting for an experienced rider, but its 31.3-inch published seat, manageable naked-bike ergonomics, ABS, ride modes, and composed road manners give it a credible step-up role.

That is not the same as calling it universally beginner-safe. A 755cc motorcycle can accelerate quickly, and no riding mode substitutes for training, throttle discipline, licensing, protective equipment, or adapting to local traffic and weather. A new rider should take formal training and test the motorcycle at a controlled pace.

For an experienced beginner or an intermediate rider coming from a smaller single-cylinder or twin, the Honda’s broader performance envelope may delay the need to upgrade again. The Yamaha’s lower listed mass may nevertheless be easier to manage during parking-lot maneuvers, so buyers should sit on and, where possible, ride both.

  9. 9. Honda offers useful factory accessories for comfort and year-round ownership

Honda lists a custom rider seat, heated grips, a required heated-grip attachment kit, and a meter visor for the CB750 Hornet. Those options matter because a motorcycle that fits a rider’s climate and daily routine is more useful than one that merely wins a specification chart.

Heated grips can make cold-weather commuting more comfortable, while a different rider seat may help address the fit or long-ride comfort concerns that cannot be solved by changing engine size. The meter visor is a smaller styling and instrument-area accessory rather than a substitute for proper wind protection.

Prices, stock, model-year compatibility, and dealer installation charges can change. Treat CB750 Hornet heated grips and the custom rider seat as Honda OEM accessory options to verify with a dealer, not as guaranteed inclusions in the motorcycle’s $7,999 MSRP.

  10. 10. The MT-07 is excellent, but its strengths may not justify the extra money for this brief

The 2025 Yamaha MT-07 deserves more respect than a simple carryover comparison would suggest. Yamaha adds YCC-T, YRC riding modes, switchable traction control, a 41mm inverted fork, radial four-piston front calipers, SpinForged wheels, a five-inch TFT, smartphone connectivity, and an acoustic amplification system. Yamaha also lists the motorcycle at 403 pounds wet, versus Honda’s 422-pound curb figure.

Those changes make the MT-07 a legitimate alternative, especially for a rider who values a lighter-feeling motorcycle, Yamaha’s CP2 character, or the MT family’s design language. Lower mass can matter every time the bike is pushed out of a garage, turned around, or caught at a low-speed stop.

For this article’s priorities, though, Yamaha’s advantages do not erase the Honda’s $600 lower MSRP, larger displacement, lower published seat, standard quickshifter, and broad equipment package. We would pay the extra money for the Yamaha only if its lighter feel and engine character were more important to us than Honda’s specification-based value.

Why someone might reasonably choose the Yamaha MT-07

The MT-07 is not a losing motorcycle; it is the more focused alternative for a different set of priorities.

  • You want the lowest listed mass. Yamaha’s 403-pound wet figure is lower than Honda’s 422-pound curb figure, although the different terminology means the comparison is not perfectly standardized.
  • You prefer CP2 character. Engine feel is subjective, and some riders will prefer the Yamaha twin’s particular delivery and sound over the Hornet’s larger engine.
  • You want Yamaha’s updated electronics. YCC-T, YRC modes, switchable traction control, smartphone connectivity, and acoustic amplification are meaningful parts of the 2025 update.
  • You prefer the MT design and riding experience. Styling and feel are legitimate purchase criteria. A motorcycle chosen emotionally can be the better motorcycle if it gets ridden more often.
  • You find the Yamaha better at low speed. Published weight is not the same as handling, but a lighter-feeling motorcycle can be easier to move around and recover during awkward maneuvers.

If any of those points dominates your decision, the MT-07’s $8,599 MSRP may be justified. Before committing, compare the actual motorcycle and check current MT-07 inventory, since dealer pricing, destination charges, accessories, and availability can vary.

Ownership details that should not decide the comparison by themselves

Both use chain final drive

The Honda and Yamaha both use chain final drive. That means neither is maintenance-free: the chain needs appropriate cleaning, lubrication, inspection, and adjustment according to the manufacturer’s guidance and riding conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A motorcycle chain maintenance kit is a practical ownership item for either bike, not a Honda-specific reason to buy the Hornet. Confirm that any cleaner, lubricant, brushes, stand, or other tool is suitable for the chain and seals on the motorcycle you purchase. Product compatibility and current listings should be checked before ordering.

Do not assume one is cheaper to run without evidence

The Honda’s lower MSRP is documented in this comparison, but that does not establish lower fuel consumption, insurance, service costs, tire life, or resale value. Those variables depend on use, location, rider history, dealer rates, consumables, and market conditions. We would not choose between these bikes on ownership-cost claims that have not been independently verified.

Gear remains part of the real budget

Either motorcycle should be purchased with appropriate protective equipment, including a properly fitted full-face helmet, motorcycle jacket, gloves, riding pants, and over-the-ankle boots. Equipment is not a reason to choose Honda or Yamaha, but it belongs in the buyer’s total budget alongside destination, taxes, registration, dealer fees, and accessories.

Our buying recommendation

Choose the 2025 Honda CB750 Hornet if you want the strongest combination of price, displacement, standard equipment, a lower published seat, and performance-oriented chassis hardware. It is the motorcycle we would buy for a U.S. rider who wants a middleweight naked bike with room to grow and does not want to pay extra for the Yamaha’s particular character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the 2025 Yamaha MT-07 if its lower listed weight, CP2 engine feel, updated electronic throttle, traction-control system, or MT styling matters more to you than the Honda’s value advantage. The Yamaha is a serious 2025 redesign in the areas that matter, not merely a cosmetic refresh.

Whichever bike wins on paper, sit on both, check reach to the controls, ask for itemized out-the-door pricing, confirm the exact model year and included equipment, and arrange a controlled test ride where legal and available. The right decision depends on whether you value the Honda’s broader package or the Yamaha’s lighter, more character-focused alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2025 Honda CB750 Hornet faster than the Yamaha MT-07?

The Honda has the larger 755cc engine, while the Yamaha uses a 689cc twin. That gives the Hornet more specification-based performance headroom, but this comparison does not establish a guaranteed acceleration advantage or independent test result.

Which motorcycle is easier for a shorter rider?

Honda has the lower published seat at 31.3 inches versus 31.7 inches for the Yamaha. However, seat width, suspension sag, inseam, and rider technique affect actual reach, so shorter riders should sit on both motorcycles rather than rely on the numbers alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the 2025 Honda CB750 Hornet come with a quickshifter?

Yes. Honda lists a quickshifter as standard equipment for clutchless upshifts under power. That should not be interpreted as a claim that the motorcycle includes every possible quickshifter function, such as clutchless downshifts.

Is the Honda CB750 Hornet better value than the 2025 Yamaha MT-07?

The Hornet is the stronger value for this comparison because it starts at $7,999, compared with $8,599 for the MT-07, while including a larger engine, lower published seat, quickshifter, TFT connectivity, ride modes, and serious front-end hardware. The Yamaha may be worth the extra money to riders who prefer its lighter feel and CP2 character.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: We would pick the 2025 Honda CB750 Hornet because it costs $600 less at base MSRP while offering more displacement, a lower published seat, a standard quickshifter, useful connectivity and ride modes, and a strong front-end specification. The Yamaha MT-07 remains the better choice for riders who prioritize lighter mass and CP2 character.
