There is no defensible, like-for-like top ten of the rarest Toyotas in the available official records: some sources count production, others sales, limited editions, race-prepared cars or surviving originals. The examples below are therefore notable low-volume Toyotas and Toyota-group cars, not a strict ranking. The clearest headline figures are 337 Toyota 2000GTs sold, a planned and completed run of 500 Lexus LFAs, and 100- and 350-car editions of the Mark X GRMN.
What does “rarest” mean for a Toyota?
Rarity depends on what is being counted. A model’s original production total is not comparable to the number of cars in a limited edition, the number prepared for racing, or the number of surviving originals. A low production count also does not establish how many examples remain today.
The cases below are organized by the kind of evidence available, rather than presented as a numerical ranking. “Toyota” is used broadly to include Lexus where noted; the LFA wears the Lexus badge.
Low-volume production models
Toyoda Model AA: 1,404 produced by 1942
Toyota identifies the Toyoda Model AA, announced in 1936, as its first production passenger car. The company’s vehicle history records 1,404 produced by 1942. It had a 3,389 cc inline-six OHV engine rated at 65 hp at 3,000 rpm. Toyota Motor Corporation’s Model AA history is the source for the production and engine figures.

Survivor counts are a separate matter: Toyota UK describes the Louwman Museum’s car as the only known pre-war original. That is a claim about known surviving originals, not a claim that only one AA was built.
Toyota 2000GT: 337 sold, according to Toyota Automobile Museum
The Toyota Automobile Museum says production ended in 1970 and reports that 337 2000GT vehicles were sold, including early and late models. Toyota Canada’s 2018 sports-car history instead describes fewer than 400 units as built. Those figures use different wording—sold versus built—so they should not be treated as identical measurements. The museum also describes the production process as almost handmade, with monthly output reaching up to 14 and sometimes falling below 10. Toyota Automobile Museum’s 2000GT history provides the sales figure and production context; Toyota Canada’s 2018 account gives the broader built estimate.

The 2000GT appeared in You Only Live Twice. The open car used for filming was a quick conversion of one of two cars prepared for the shoot, not a regular production convertible. The museum notes that its collection includes five of the cars, including the Bond car; that is a count of the museum’s collection, not of all surviving 2000GTs.
Toyota Sports 800: Japanese-market, but no total established here
Toyota Canada describes the Sports 800 as a Japanese-market car that was never sold outside Japan and lists its output at 45 horsepower. The cited account gives no production total, so it supports the car’s regional exclusivity but not a numerical rarity rank. Toyota Canada’s 2018 sports-car history is the source for those details.

Limited editions and Toyota-group production runs
Lexus LFA: 500 cars in the completed run
Toyota reported that production of the Lexus LFA began in December 2010 and that the planned 500-car run was completed on December 17, 2012. Production of the Nürburgring Package began in January 2012, but the announcement does not give a separate package count. The Nürburgring Package is a specification within the LFA run, not an additional production total. Toyota’s December 17, 2012 announcement confirms the completed run.
Toyota Mark X GRMN: two separate editions
Toyota announced two limited editions of the Mark X GRMN at different times. Keep their totals distinct: the first edition was limited to 100 cars, while the second was limited to 350. The second-generation edition was a manual, rear-wheel-drive sports sedan based on the 350RDS, with a 3.5-liter V6.

Rare competition preparations are not separate production models
Three SCCA-prepared Toyota 2000GTs
Toyota GB reports that three 2000GTs were prepared for SCCA competition: two race cars and one spare. They competed in the 1968 SCCA production class. This is a small, specifically documented competition preparation, not a separate mass-produced model or a count of all 2000GTs. Toyota GB’s June 25, 2004 account describes the cars and their racing history.
So, what is the rarest Toyota?
The answer changes with the yardstick. Among the examples here, the AA has the lowest stated total for a complete production model, at 1,404 produced by 1942; the 2000GT has a lower reported figure of 337 sold, but that is a sales count rather than a directly equivalent production total. The LFA’s 500 is a completed run for a Lexus-badged Toyota-group car, while the Mark X GRMN figures apply to limited editions. The three SCCA-prepared 2000GTs and Toyota UK’s “only known” AA survivor describe competition preparation and survival, respectively—not a competing model-production ranking.
