Police motorcycles are chosen for a different job than ordinary road bikes. A patrol motorcycle needs to carry radios, warning lights, protective equipment, and sometimes a passenger, while still being narrow and maneuverable enough to work through traffic. Highway units also need strong weather protection and stability at sustained speeds.
There is no single worldwide police motorcycle. Some models are purpose-built authority versions, such as the BMW R 1300 RT-P and Honda NT1100 Police. Others are civilian motorcycles supplied to a named police agency and fitted with lights, sirens, radios, crash protection, and luggage.

1. BMW R 1300 RT-P
The BMW R 1300 RT-P is BMW Motorrad’s latest authority motorcycle and the successor to the R 1250 RT-P. BMW presented the U.S.-specification motorcycle to law-enforcement personnel, including representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, LAPD, and California Highway Patrol, on August 12, 2025.
It is designed around the demands of patrol work rather than simply adding a light bar to a civilian touring bike. Police-specific electrical systems, emergency lighting, radio integration, and controls allow departments to configure the motorcycle for their own equipment. Michigan State Police also evaluated the 2026 model as part of its police vehicle testing program.
#1 Best Overall
- Die cast model motorcycle featuring BMW R1200 RT-P police bike design.
- 1:12 scale model suitable for display or collection.
- Detailed police-style motorcycle replica with realistic design elements.
- Designed for collectors, model enthusiasts, or display purposes.
- Includes one BMW R1200 RT-P police bike model.
Best suited for: Highway patrol, traffic enforcement, escorts, and long shifts.
Important distinction: The R 1300 RT-P is the newer generation. The older R 1250 RT-P remains relevant in existing fleets but is no longer BMW’s newest authority model.
2. BMW R 1250 RT-P
The R 1250 RT-P was BMW’s previous-generation police touring motorcycle. It shares its basic platform with the civilian R 1250 RT but was produced as a dedicated authority version, with police-specific equipment and documentation.

The motorcycle’s strengths are the same qualities that make the civilian RT useful for long-distance riding: strong wind protection, a comfortable riding position, substantial luggage capacity, and stable high-speed handling. Those traits suit officers who spend an entire shift on motorways or who provide escort services over long distances.
BMW’s authority website continues to provide an R 1250 RT-P operating manual and earlier brochures. That confirms its status as a genuine police model, but it should generally be described as a previous-generation or in-service fleet motorcycle rather than the current BMW police flagship.
Best suited for: Traffic patrol, motorcades, intercity policing, and highway work.
3. Harley-Davidson Police Road Glide
Harley-Davidson’s 2026 Police Road Glide is the current touring motorcycle listed in the company’s police and rescue program. It uses the Milwaukee-Eight 121 VVT engine and has emergency lighting integrated into the fairing and Tour-Pak luggage carrier.
The Road Glide’s full fairing and touring equipment make it appropriate for long shifts, highway patrol, ceremonial duties, and escort work. Like other full-size police touring motorcycles, it gives an agency room for communications equipment, storage, and additional protective gear.
Its appearance is familiar in American police fleets, but the police version is not simply an unmodified showroom motorcycle. Factory police equipment and fleet-specific preparation are part of the authority package.
Best suited for: U.S. traffic units, highway patrol, ceremonial details, and long-distance assignments.
4. Harley-Davidson Police Road King — FLHP
The Harley-Davidson Police Road King, identified by the model code FLHP, is the less-faired alternative in Harley-Davidson’s police range. Unlike the Road Glide and Electra Glide, it does not use a full touring fairing mounted ahead of the handlebars.
That simpler front end can be useful for urban traffic enforcement, where an exposed handlebar and more open riding position may make low-speed maneuvering and frequent stops feel more natural. The motorcycle is also suitable for escort duty and general patrol work.

- Tamiya P/N: 14057
Harley-Davidson service documentation identifies the FLHP as the Police Road King and provides police-specific information covering equipment, lighting, dimensions, and weight. However, service documentation alone does not prove that the model is newly orderable in every market. Availability should be confirmed with a local fleet representative.
Best suited for: Urban traffic enforcement, escort duty, and agencies preferring a non-full-fairing motorcycle.
5. Harley-Davidson Police Electra Glide — FLHTP
The Police Electra Glide, or FLHTP, is Harley-Davidson’s traditional fork-mounted-fairing police touring motorcycle. It is listed separately from the FLHP Police Road King in Harley-Davidson’s service information and includes police-specific lighting, equipment, dimensions, and load specifications.

That makes the FLHTP a natural choice for highway patrol, motorcade support, and agencies covering large distances.
The model has appeared in many older police fleets and remains documented by Harley-Davidson. It should not, however, be presented as the company’s newest police model: Harley-Davidson’s current flagship police announcement is the 2026 Police Road Glide.
Best suited for: Highway patrol, long-distance motor units, and weather-exposed assignments.
6. Honda NT1100 Police
The Honda NT1100 Police is a modern law-enforcement motorcycle aimed at departments that want touring ability without the size and weight of a full-scale police cruiser or large sport-tourer.
The civilian NT1100 platform uses a 1,084 cc parallel-twin engine, a 20-liter fuel tank, touring-focused weather protection, and—depending on specification—Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission. The police version can be equipped for the authority market with the lighting, communications, storage, and protective equipment required by the purchasing department.
Its comparatively manageable size makes it suitable for mixed urban and highway use. An officer can use it for traffic enforcement in a crowded city and still have enough comfort and weather protection for longer road-policing shifts.
The NT1100 Police should not be confused with the older ST1300P. Both occupy the sport-touring police category, but the NT1100 is Honda’s newer offering.
Best suited for: Urban patrol, road policing, traffic enforcement, and mixed city/highway duties.

The Yamaha FJR1300P-A is a police-specification version of Yamaha’s FJR1300 sport-tourer. Yamaha developed it with input from police patrols in European countries, giving it the high-speed stability, weather protection, and long-distance comfort expected from an escort or highway motorcycle.

The FJR1300P-A is particularly well suited to official-event work. Police motorcycle units can use this type of machine for dignitary escorts, organized motorcades, high-speed patrol, and road closures over substantial distances.
Best suited for: Highway patrol, motorcycle escorts, official events, and long-distance policing.

Availability note: Yamaha states that police-model specifications and availability vary by country. The FJR1300P-A should not be described as universally available worldwide.
8. Yamaha MT09TRAP
New Zealand Police introduced the Yamaha MT09TRAP, based on the Yamaha 900 Tracer, as a lighter alternative to older, high-mileage patrol motorcycles. Police described it as more than 100 kilograms lighter than the motorcycles it replaced.
The equipment package includes traction control, riding modes, hand guards, emergency lights, a radio, and a siren. That combination gives officers a motorcycle that is easier to maneuver in urban traffic while retaining the electronic aids and touring practicality needed for road-safety work.
The MT09TRAP is a good example of why police motorcycles cannot always be identified from a global manufacturer catalog. It is a documented New Zealand Police model, not a standard police designation sold in every country. The “P” in a police model name does not guarantee identical international availability or specification.

9. Honda ST1300P
The Honda ST1300P was an authority version of Honda’s ST1300 sport-tourer. It became a familiar police motorcycle in several countries, including New Zealand and the United Kingdom, where agencies used it for road policing and VIP escorts.
Police conversions could include emergency lighting, sirens, radios, crash protection, and a programmable rear message display. The ST1300’s long-distance comfort and stable handling made it well suited to officers who spent most of their shifts on open roads.
It is now an older, discontinued platform. Existing examples may still be working in police fleets, and used motorcycles can still appear on the market, but the ST1300P is not Honda’s current police model. Honda’s modern authority offering is the NT1100 Police.

10. Ducati Multistrada 950
Ducati supplied 25 Multistrada 950 motorcycles to the Road Safety Department of Bologna’s local police in Italy. The motorcycles were equipped for local road-safety duties with heated grips, crash protection, panniers, LED warning lights, dual-tone sirens, Motorola radios, and a centralized control panel.
The Multistrada’s upright riding position, suspension travel, and relatively agile handling make it practical for city traffic and uneven urban roads. Panniers also give officers space for equipment without requiring a large touring fairing.
This is a documented police deployment, not proof that every Multistrada 950 is a police model. In this case, Ducati supplied a specific local-police order and the motorcycles received an authority equipment package for that agency.

How police motorcycles differ from civilian bikes
A motorcycle with blue or red lights is not automatically a factory-built police model. Agencies may buy an authority version directly from a manufacturer, purchase a civilian model and have it converted, or order a batch with equipment installed by a specialist supplier.
Typical police additions include:
- Emergency lights and a siren
- Two-way radio and antenna systems
- Crash bars and reinforced mounting points
- Side cases, top boxes, and equipment brackets
- High-output electrical systems
- Programmable rear message displays
- Special controls that let the rider operate lights and communications while moving
The intended assignment matters as much as the motorcycle’s engine. A heavy, fully faired tourer is a strong choice for motorway patrol and escorts. A lighter adventure-style motorcycle may be more useful in dense city traffic, where officers make frequent stops and need to turn around in restricted spaces.

FAQ
What is the most common type of police motorcycle?
There is no single worldwide standard. Large sport-tourers and touring motorcycles are common for highway patrol, escorts, and long shifts, while lighter adventure-style bikes are useful for urban traffic enforcement.
Are police motorcycles faster than civilian motorcycles?
Not necessarily. Police motorcycles are usually selected for a combination of acceleration, stability, braking, weather protection, electrical capacity, storage, and rider ergonomics. A police version may carry extra equipment and therefore weigh more than a comparable civilian bike.
What equipment is added to a police motorcycle?
Typical equipment includes emergency lights, a siren, two-way radio, crash protection, luggage, warning controls, and sometimes a programmable rear message display. The exact package depends on the agency and local regulations.
Are the BMW R 1250 RT-P and Honda ST1300P still current models?
Both are older police platforms that may remain in service, but neither should be described as its manufacturer’s newest police model. BMW’s newer authority motorcycle is the R 1300 RT-P, while Honda markets the NT1100 Police.
The Bottom Line
Police motorcycles range from full-size touring machines such as the BMW R 1300 RT-P and Harley-Davidson Police Road Glide to lighter models such as the Yamaha MT09TRAP and Ducati Multistrada 950. The right choice depends on the assignment: highway patrol favors stability, protection, and storage, while city traffic work rewards low weight and maneuverability. Just as importantly, “used by police” can mean either a factory authority model or a civilian motorcycle converted for one agency’s fleet.
