But the exact ten-SUV list and reliability method behind the original 2024 title could not be verified, so current rankings should not be passed off as its picks.
For a useful, checkable alternative, iSeeCars’ page titled “Most Reliable Used Luxury Crossover SUVs Under $40k for 2026” lists current used-market examples below that historical benchmark. Its ranking is a 2026 snapshot—not a reconstruction of the 2024 list—and prices can change.
What the 2024 price benchmark means
The Associated Press report said Edmunds data put the average price paid for a new vehicle in the United States at $47,338 in January 2024, down 1.2% from January a year earlier. This is a monthly U.S. transaction-price figure, not a full-year average or a manufacturer’s suggested retail price.
That distinction matters when comparing a used luxury SUV with a “new-car average.” A used vehicle’s asking price is not necessarily its final transaction price, and a national average does not describe local taxes, fees, financing, or the particular vehicle’s condition.

Two current used luxury SUV examples below $40,000
iSeeCars’ 2026 under-$40,000 ranking gives concrete examples below both the $40,000 cutoff and the January 2024 average new-car price. Its page says the analysis covers used crossovers one to six years old and uses data from 12 million vehicles.

These figures are time-sensitive averages from iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking, not guaranteed local prices or quotes for a particular vehicle. The page ranks ten models—Lexus RX 350, Lexus RX 350L, Acura RDX, Volvo XC60, Acura MDX, BMW X1, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, Porsche Macan, BMW X4, and INFINITI QX60—but those are its current entries, not verified selections from a 2024 article.

How to read reliability ratings
iSeeCars rates reliability on a 1-to-10 scale, with 10 highest. Its overall score combines reliability, resale value, and safety; the company describes its underlying studies as drawing on more than 12 million new and used vehicles, alongside NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings. The figure is therefore an iSeeCars assessment, not a universal reliability grade. Other publishers’ scores use different methods and are not directly interchangeable.
For comparison, CarMax describes its RepairPal ratings as using the cost, frequency, and severity of unscheduled repairs and maintenance for selected 2008–2022 vehicles. The ratings page is dated March 18, 2025; that stated vehicle coverage should not be assumed to include every newer model year. CarMax also notes that a specific vehicle’s reliability may vary by maintenance and driving history, model year, trim, and features.

How to assess a specific SUV before buying
- Compare like with like. Check model year, mileage, trim, and local asking prices against vehicles with similar equipment and condition. A model-level average cannot establish whether an individual listing is fairly priced.
- Read the history report. A CARFAX vehicle history report may include recorded damage or accidents, maintenance and inspections, mileage, ownership changes, commercial use, theft, and open manufacturer recalls. Its records depend on information being reported, and no provider can guarantee a complete history.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the actual vehicle, including condition and signs of deferred maintenance. A clean report or strong model-level rating cannot substitute for examining the car.
- Match the vehicle to your use. Consider seating rows, cargo needs, mileage, and the specific trim’s equipment. The ranked models vary in size and configuration, so “luxury SUV” alone is not enough to make a practical comparison.
- Budget beyond the purchase price. Compare insurance, fuel, scheduled service, and likely repair exposure for the exact model year and condition. The sources here do not establish consistent ownership-cost totals across the ranked vehicles, so a single across-the-board cost comparison would be misleading.
What can and cannot be confirmed about the 2024 list
The available evidence establishes the January 2024 U.S. new-car price benchmark, plus current iSeeCars used-market rankings and examples. It does not establish which ten vehicles appeared in the original 2024 list or how that list defined “dependable.” As a result, the 2026 rankings are useful as a separate current reference, not proof of the original list’s contents.
