Rental categories are not guarantees of a specific make, model, seating layout, or equipment. Use this list as a guide to the vehicle types worth comparing, then confirm the exact car and price for your dates before booking.
How to choose an SUV rental for a long road trip
- Start with passengers. Count everyone who will ride, then check the offered vehicle’s seating layout. A listed seat count is not a measure of comfort, especially on a long drive.
- Check luggage space with your planned seats in use. Ask how much cargo room remains with the rows you need occupied. Published maximum cargo figures may assume folded seats and may not reflect your group’s setup.
- Consider fuel use and route length. Compare the specific vehicle’s fuel economy or range with your planned distance, likely fuel costs, and stops. Estimates for a particular model year are not promises about a substituted rental vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains its role in regulating fuel-economy window stickers for new vehicles and Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards at NHTSA’s CAFE overview.
- Match the drivetrain and equipment to the route. If you need all-wheel drive or specific cold-weather equipment, confirm it for the actual vehicle; do not infer it from a broad category name.
- Compare safety information by exact model year. Look up the vehicle’s NHTSA results rather than assuming a rating applies to an entire rental class. NHTSA evaluates frontal and side crashworthiness and rollover resistance, and cautions against comparing overall scores across different vehicle classes in cases where that comparison is not appropriate. See its Car Safety Ratings guidance.
- Verify the reservation details. Confirm pickup location and dates, vehicle or category, seat count, cargo capacity, fuel type, relevant equipment, and total price before paying.
10 SUV types to compare for long road trips
These are useful rental categories to compare, not a verified ranking of specific models. Rental providers may offer a category without guaranteeing which vehicle you will receive. For example, Hertz says its models differ between locations; SIXT describes US categories spanning crossovers, full-size SUVs, and seven-seat vehicles. Availability depends on the place and dates you search.
1. Compact crossover
A compact crossover is a sensible starting point for a small group with modest luggage. Compare the rear-seat space and cargo area in the actual model: a category label alone cannot tell you whether your passengers and bags will fit comfortably.
2. Midsize two-row SUV
Consider a two-row midsize SUV when you want more room than a compact crossover but do not need a third row. Check the luggage space behind the occupied rear seats, since that is the space your trip will use.

#1 Best Overall
- TWO PANELS FOR DAILY RIDES: Made for drivers with a front seat passenger, this 2-pack softens direct side sun, glare, and heat. Use one or both on compatible passenger or rear door glass for commutes, errands, rentals, and road trips.
- STAYS PUT WITH DAILY USE: Mist clean interior glass, apply the PVC film, and the non-adhesive electrostatic layer stays close without clips, magnets, suction cups, or permanent adhesive. Compatible manual and automatic windows can move normally.
- SMOOTH WATER-APPLY SETUP: Clean interior glass, mist with water, place the film, then squeegee out water for a flatter, cleaner-looking finish with fewer trapped bubbles. To remove, peel it off in one piece; rinse, air-dry, and reuse.
- PEEL, RINSE, REUSE: Remove the film in one piece, rinse off dust, air-dry it, and reapply when plans change. This washable, reusable auto accessory travels easily between daily commutes, rentals, and road trips without separate hardware.
- MEASURE YOUR SIDE GLASS: Check the listed size against the usable inside-glass area before ordering. This is not a custom-fit cover; it can be considered for compatible cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans only after measurement.
3. Midsize three-row SUV
A three-row midsize SUV can accommodate a larger group when the specific vehicle has the needed seat count. Before choosing it, verify how much cargo room remains when all the rows you need are in use.
4. Full-size two-row SUV
A full-size two-row model is worth comparing when your group needs more cabin or luggage room but not a third row. Confirm the particular vehicle’s passenger capacity and cargo dimensions rather than relying on the class name.

- ✅30 Pack Value with Easy Storage Each set includes 30 high-quality disposable floor mats for car interior protection, which lasts for about 7 months when replaced weekly. The mats are stackable for easy storage in the trunk or garage, taking up minimal space when not in use.
5. Full-size three-row SUV
For a bigger party, a full-size three-row SUV may be an option if it is available and its layout suits your group. Treat the stated seat count as a fit check, not a promise of adult comfort or ample luggage room; request the vehicle’s configuration and cargo capacity with the seats occupied.
6. Seven-seat SUV category
Some rental providers describe categories that include seven-seat SUVs. That description does not establish which model will be assigned or how much room remains for bags. Ask for the actual seating layout and cargo capacity before booking if all seven seats matter.

7. Hybrid SUV
If a hybrid is offered, compare its vehicle-specific fuel information with the route and rental price. Do not assume a hybrid is available, or that a category-level estimate will match the car ultimately supplied.
8. Electric SUV
An electric SUV can work for a long journey if its range and charging plan fit the route. Confirm the exact vehicle, charging access along the itinerary, and any rental-specific requirements before committing; the category alone does not establish range or charging equipment.
Rank #4
9. All-wheel-drive SUV
All-wheel drive may be relevant for a route with conditions that call for it, but it should be treated as a specific equipment requirement, not a standard feature of every SUV rental. Verify the drivetrain on the vehicle you are booking and check separately for any tires or other seasonal equipment you need.
10. A minivan, if body style is flexible
If passenger and cargo room matter more than having an SUV, include minivans in your search. As a concrete example, Hertz lists the 2026 Chrysler Voyager LX at up to seven seats, 914 L of trunk capacity, and 22 mpg combined. Those are specifications for that minivan example, not a promise about a rental assignment or a specification for SUVs. Hertz also notes that models differ between locations and a rental may have different specifications from those listed on its page.

Where to look—and what a listing does not guarantee
Rental-provider category pages can help you compare sizes, while marketplaces can show named vehicles. Hertz presents SUVs as an option for road trips, and SIXT describes several US SUV sizes, including full-size and seven-seat categories. Turo’s US marketplace displays individual SUV listings. None of these examples guarantees that a particular vehicle, configuration, or price will be available for your trip; listings and inventory depend on the pickup location and dates. Check the offered vehicle details directly before booking.
