An engine misfire means one or more cylinders are not burning the air-fuel mixture correctly. You may notice a shaking idle, hesitation, loss of power, hard starting, or a flashing Check Engine Light.
The cause usually belongs to one of three groups: ignition, fuel and air delivery, or compression and mechanical timing. A diagnostic code can point to the affected cylinder or system, but it usually does not tell you which part to replace.

Some misfires are straightforward home repairs, such as a worn spark plug or damaged vacuum hose. Others require fuel-pressure testing, a leak-down test, or major engine repairs. The key is to diagnose before buying parts.

If the Check Engine Light is flashing, avoid hard acceleration, high engine speeds, and heavy loads. A severe misfire can send unburned fuel into the catalytic converter, causing it to overheat and fail. Have the vehicle inspected promptly rather than continuing to drive it normally.

10 common causes of an engine misfire
1. Worn, fouled, or incorrectly gapped spark plugs
Spark plugs can stop firing reliably when their electrodes are worn, the gap is wrong, or the plug is contaminated with fuel, oil, coolant, or carbon. A cracked ceramic insulator, incorrect installation torque, or the wrong plug type can also cause trouble.
Can you fix it at home? Usually. Remove and inspect the plugs, then replace them with the exact type specified for the engine. Use the manufacturer’s gap and torque specifications rather than relying on a generic chart.
Inspect the cause of any contamination. New plugs will not permanently solve an oil leak from a valve cover, oil-control problem, worn valve guide, or coolant leak from a head-gasket failure.
2. A failing ignition coil, plug wire, or coil boot
A weak ignition coil, cracked coil housing, damaged plug wire, loose connector, or poorly seated boot can prevent a strong spark from reaching the plug. Moisture may make an intermittent ignition fault more obvious in wet weather.
Can you fix it at home? Often. On a coil-on-plug engine, you can sometimes move the suspect coil to another cylinder, clear or record the codes, and see whether the misfire follows it. If the original code was P0301 and the fault becomes P0302 after the swap, the coil is strongly implicated.
Do not replace a coil simply because a scan tool reports P0301 or P0302. Those codes identify the cylinder, not automatically the failed component.

3. A clogged, leaking, or electrically failed fuel injector
An injector may be restricted by deposits, fail electrically, spray unevenly, or leak fuel into its cylinder. A restricted injector can create a lean misfire; a leaking injector can make the mixture too rich and foul the spark plug.
Can you fix it at home? Basic testing and replacement are possible for an experienced DIYer, but injector diagnosis is more involved than changing a plug or coil. Resistance readings must be compared with the vehicle’s specifications, and an electrical test does not always prove that the injector has the correct spray pattern.
Some diesel common-rail injectors also require a correction or calibration code to be programmed into the engine computer after installation.
4. Low fuel pressure or restricted fuel delivery
A weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter, faulty pressure regulator, blocked fuel line, or poor electrical supply to the pump can create a lean misfire. Low fuel pressure usually affects multiple cylinders rather than only one.

Sometimes. You need the correct fuel-pressure gauge, a safe connection point, the manufacturer’s pressure specification, and a way to test pressure under the conditions where the fault occurs. Fuel-system work also presents a fire hazard.
Multiple-cylinder misfires combined with lean codes such as P0171 or P0174 make a fuel-delivery or unmetered-air problem more plausible than one bad spark plug.
5. A vacuum or intake-air leak
A cracked vacuum hose, loose intake boot, leaking intake-manifold gasket, PCV leak, or disconnected purge hose can let air enter after the engine computer has measured the incoming air. The resulting lean mixture often causes rough idle, surging, and misfires that are most noticeable at idle.

A leak downstream of the mass-airflow sensor is particularly disruptive because that air was not included in the computer’s fuel calculation.
6. A dirty or inaccurate MAF or MAP sensor
The mass-airflow sensor (MAF) and manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) help the computer calculate engine load and fuel delivery. Contamination, incorrect readings, damaged wiring, or a poor electrical connection can produce a mixture that is too lean or too rich.
Can you fix it at home? Cleaning a MAF sensor may be possible, but use only cleaner intended for MAF sensors and follow the sensor or vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. Do not touch the sensing element or spray it with brake cleaner, carburetor cleaner, or other unsuitable products.
A misfire or fuel-trim code does not prove that the MAF, MAP, or oxygen sensor caused the problem. These sensors can report the effects of a vacuum leak, ignition fault, or fuel problem.
7. A stuck-open or carboned-up EGR valve
An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve that remains open when it should be closed can dilute the intake charge and cause rough running, particularly at idle. Carbon buildup beneath the valve can create a similar fault.
Can you fix it at home? Sometimes. If the valve is accessible and the service information permits cleaning, inspection and cleaning may be practical. Electronic EGR systems may need position testing or calibration after the work.

An EGR-related code such as P0401 makes an EGR problem more likely, but it still does not prove that the valve itself needs replacement.
8. Contaminated, incorrect, or poor-quality fuel
Water in the fuel, degraded gasoline, or filling a gasoline vehicle with diesel can cause random or multiple-cylinder misfires. If the problem began immediately after refueling, fuel contamination should be considered.
Can you fix it at home? Minor contamination may be resolved by using the correct fuel, but substantial contamination or the wrong fuel should be professionally drained. Do not keep driving if the engine is misfiring badly.
Fuel additives are not a guaranteed cure for a failed injector, low fuel pressure, ignition fault, or low compression.
9. Low compression from an internal engine problem
A cylinder must seal and breathe correctly to burn the mixture. A burned or bent valve, leaking head gasket, worn piston rings, damaged cylinder wall, broken valve spring, collapsed lifter, or worn camshaft lobe can all cause a misfire.
Can you fix it at home? A compression test is possible at home, but the repair usually is not a simple driveway job. A leak-down test is more useful because it helps identify where the pressure is escaping:
| Where you hear air escaping | Likely problem |
|---|---|
| Tailpipe | Leaking exhaust valve |
| Throttle body or intake | Leaking intake valve |
| Crankcase, breather, or PCV opening | Worn rings or cylinder damage |
Low compression in two adjacent cylinders can indicate a head-gasket failure between them.

10. Incorrect valve timing or a camshaft/crankshaft timing fault
A slipped timing belt or chain, incorrect cam timing, damaged camshaft, or timing-control problem can cause poor running and misfires across several cylinders. It may also produce low compression.
Can you fix it at home? Only if you are comfortable following the exact timing procedure and have the vehicle’s service information. Setting the timing incorrectly can cause severe damage, especially on an interference engine.
If every cylinder shows low compression but the leak-down test does not show excessive leakage, incorrect valve timing is one possible explanation.
What P0300 and P0301–P0308 mean
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P0300 | Random or multiple-cylinder misfire detected |
| P0301 | Cylinder 1 misfire |
| P0302 | Cylinder 2 misfire |
| P0303–P0308 | Misfire detected in the cylinder represented by the final digit |
A code such as P0301 tells you which cylinder is misfiring. It does not automatically identify a bad plug, coil, injector, oxygen sensor, or catalytic converter. P0300 may describe an intermittent problem or a fault that occurs only at a particular engine speed, temperature, or load.
A sensible at-home diagnostic order
- Check the warning light. Treat a flashing Check Engine Light as an urgent misfire. Reduce speed and load and arrange a prompt inspection.
- Scan before clearing anything. Record stored and pending codes, freeze-frame data, and any fuel-trim or sensor codes. Note engine speed, load, coolant temperature, and conditions when the fault occurred.
- Start with the affected cylinder. Inspect its spark plug, coil or wire, boot, connector, and wiring. Look for oil, coolant, corrosion, cracks, and loose connections.
- Swap compatible parts. Move a coil or plug to another cylinder when the design allows it. A misfire that follows the part provides useful evidence; a misfire that stays put points elsewhere.
- Inspect for unmetered air. Check intake hoses, vacuum lines, PCV plumbing, purge connections, and clamps for cracks or disconnections.
- Test fuel delivery. Check fuel pressure against the specification and investigate injector operation if ignition components are not the cause.
- Test compression and leakage. Perform these tests before condemning the engine or replacing expensive parts.
- Check timing when several cylinders are affected. A timing-belt or timing-chain fault becomes more plausible when the engine has widespread misfires, poor power, and abnormal compression readings.
Misfire claims that lead to wasted money
- “The code tells me what part to replace.” It normally identifies a monitored cylinder, circuit, or system—not the failed part.
- “P0300 means every cylinder is misfiring constantly.” It means the computer detected random or multiple-cylinder misfire activity, which may be intermittent.
- “A steady Check Engine Light is harmless.” It may be less urgent than a flashing light, but an unresolved misfire can damage the catalytic converter and worsen engine damage.
- “Replace the catalytic converter first.” A misfire can damage the converter, but the ignition, fuel, air, compression, or timing fault must be repaired first.
- “New spark plugs always fix misfires.” They fix plug-related faults, not oil contamination, injector problems, vacuum leaks, low compression, or timing failures.
FAQ
Can I drive with an engine misfire?
If the Check Engine Light is flashing or the engine is shaking badly, avoid driving except to move the vehicle to safety. A severe misfire can overheat the catalytic converter. A steady light still needs diagnosis as soon as practical.
Will changing the spark plugs fix a misfire?
It will fix the problem only when the plugs are worn, damaged, incorrectly gapped, or contaminated. If the new plug becomes contaminated again, look for an oil or coolant leak, injector fault, or internal engine problem.
What is the fastest way to diagnose a single-cylinder misfire?
Scan for the cylinder code, inspect its plug and coil, then swap compatible coils or plugs with another cylinder. If the misfire follows the component, that component is a strong suspect. If it stays on the same cylinder, test for injector, wiring, vacuum, and compression problems.
Recommended Free Tools
Is P0300 a serious code?
P0300 means the engine computer detected random or multiple-cylinder misfires. It can be intermittent, but it should not be ignored. Check for a flashing warning light and investigate ignition, air leaks, fuel delivery, compression, and timing.
The Bottom Line
Start with the simple, evidence-based checks: scan the vehicle, inspect the affected cylinder, and swap compatible ignition parts before buying replacements. Vacuum leaks, fuel pressure, injectors, compression, and timing faults require progressively more testing. If the Check Engine Light flashes or a compression or leak-down test points to internal damage, stop treating the misfire as a routine plug-and-coil repair.
