Its appeal as an alternative to the new Nissan Z is about a different era of design and engineering—not a claim that the two cars are interchangeable on price, safety, reliability, or everyday use.
What is the Z32 300ZX?
Nissan identifies the Z32 as the fourth generation of the Fairlady Z. The automaker’s 2020 history says it launched in 1989 with renewed styling and high performance, placing it alongside the world’s top-class sports cars of its time. Nissan’s history page is in Japanese; its statement reads: “1989年に発売されたZ32型は、一新されたスタイリングとその高性能により、世界最高クラスのスポーツカーと並び称されました。”
The Z32 is a period-specific classic, not simply an older version of the current Z. Its production run ended in August 2000. After fans called for the model to continue, Nissan showed a Z concept in 2001 and launched the Z33 in July 2002, according to the same history.
What engines and chassis technology did it offer?
Nissan’s official Z history lists two 3.0-liter engines. The naturally aspirated VG30DE is rated at 230 ps; the twin-turbo VG30DETT is rated at 280 ps. Nissan’s Yokohama Engine Museum separately describes the VG30DETT used in the 1989 Z32 as a 280 HP engine. These are the units as stated by the respective Nissan sources; ps and HP are different units and should not be treated as identical figures.

Nissan also highlights technologies that were advanced for the period: Super HICAS four-wheel steering, multi-link suspension, and four-piston aluminum brake calipers. The company says those systems contributed to the Z32’s driving performance. That is Nissan’s account of its engineering, rather than an independent comparative test.
How did the Z32’s body configurations differ?
Nissan offered the Z32 as a two-seater and as a 2by2 four-seater. The 2by2’s additional seating distinguishes it from the two-seat configuration, but Nissan’s history page does not provide dimensions or cargo-capacity figures for comparing the two. Buyers considering a specific car should verify its configuration rather than assume every Z32 has the same seating layout.

How does the Z32 compare with the new Nissan Z?
The available official information supports a comparison of generation, launch context, engine figures, seating configurations, and design lineage. It does not establish a current, market-specific comparison of price, safety equipment, warranty, fuel economy, reliability, parts availability, or daily practicality. Those points should not be ranked without information for a defined model year and market.
| Area | Z32 300ZX | New Nissan Z |
|---|---|---|
| Generation and context | Fourth-generation Fairlady Z; launched in 1989. Nissan says sales ended in August 2000. | Nissan describes it as a newer Z; current specifications and market-specific model details are not established here. |
| Engine and quoted power | 3.0-liter VG30DE, 230 ps, or twin-turbo VG30DETT, 280 ps, according to Nissan’s history. | Not stated in the cited Nissan history information used for this comparison. |
| Seating | Two-seater or 2by2 four-seater, according to Nissan. | Not stated in the cited Nissan history information used for this comparison. |
| Chassis technologies | Super HICAS four-wheel steering, multi-link suspension, and four-piston aluminum brake calipers are among the technologies Nissan lists. | Not stated in the cited Nissan history information used for this comparison. |
| Design lineage | Nissan’s design-history search result says the newer Z prototype drew on the 300ZX’s taillights. | A separate Nissan search result describes the newer Z grille as an homage to Z32 taillights. These design-history pages could not be opened, so the lineage is attributed to Nissan without further interpretation. |
Why does the Z32 still matter to Nissan’s Z lineage?
The Z32 connects the early Z generations to the later Z33, which followed the 2001 concept and launched in July 2002. Nissan’s history page states the Z33 sold more than 250,000 units over its six years through December 2008; that is a successor-generation figure, not a Z32 sales total.

There is also a specific visual link to the newer Z. Nissan’s design-history search results say the newer Z prototype drew on the 300ZX’s taillights, and another result characterizes the newer car’s grille as an homage to Z32 taillights. Because those pages were not accessible for direct inspection, these claims are best understood as Nissan-attributed design-lineage statements, not a basis for broader claims about shared engineering.

The Z32 is a compelling alternative for someone interested in Nissan’s 1990s sports-car design and its period engineering. It is not established here as a cheaper, safer, more reliable, or more practical substitute for a new Nissan Z. Used-car prices, regional supply, ownership costs, reliability evidence, and current new-Z specifications were not verified, so those decisions require current, market-specific information.
