Scotty Kilmer’s YouTube career grew out of a working mechanic’s life: he learned at his family’s gas station, opened a repair shop in Houston, wrote a used-car guide, and spent 13 years giving advice on local television. When the station ended its paid program in 2007, he moved that advice online, where he could reach far beyond a local audience.
How did Scotty Kilmer get started in car repair?
Kilmer grew up in upstate New York, where his father ran a Texaco gas station and his grandfather, Elmer Kilmer, worked as its chief mechanic. He told Isabella Jibilian of Ocean State Media that he began working there at 14, learning by watching his grandfather rather than through formal lessons: “He said, ‘I’m not gonna teach you a darn thing, but you can watch,’” Kilmer recalled. Ocean State Media’s July 2026 profile, republished by WBUR, is the source for this account.
He continued his education while working on cars during summers and holidays. As an adult, he considered academic work, including doctoral study in anthropology, but returned to the automotive trade. He moved to Houston and opened a repair business, initially running it on his own and using flyers to attract customers, according to the profile.
How did a used-car book lead to television?
After Kilmer’s brother died in the late 1990s, his wife encouraged him to stay busy. He wrote Everyone’s Guide to Buying a Used Car and Car Maintenance, a guide to assessing used cars and avoiding being swindled. The Houston Chronicle featured the book, and a producer at a local CBS station then invited him to offer car advice on air.

The book helped open the door to television; it was not a sudden departure from repair work. Kilmer continued spending most of his time at the shop while appearing on the station. A Google Books catalog record identifies a 2017 independently published edition as 107 pages, ISBN 9781973292661; that catalog entry documents the edition, while the account of how the book led to television comes from the 2026 profile. What did Scotty Kilmer do on local TV?
At the CBS station, he hosted the recurring segment Crank it up with Scotty Kilmer, demonstrating inexpensive repair techniques. The segment ran for 13 years, according to Ocean State Media’s 2026 account, while Kilmer kept his shop as the main focus of his working life.

In 2007, the station told him it could no longer afford the program. Kilmer said he declined to continue without pay: “I said, ‘Well, I’m not gonna do it for free,’” he recalled. “‘Bye.’” The television job ended, but the advice format had already given him experience explaining car problems to an audience.
Why did Kilmer start posting on YouTube?
Kilmer began publishing videos on YouTube in 2007, the same year the station ended the paid segment. Ocean State Media reports that YouTube had expanded its Partner Program that year, making it possible for creators to earn advertising revenue. Kilmer also launched a website where people could ask him car questions. He saw online publishing as a way to reach a much larger audience than local television could offer.

Each move extended the same practical advice beyond the previous audience. Repair work gave Kilmer direct experience; the book brought that advice to readers and drew newspaper attention; local television made it a recurring broadcast feature; and YouTube let him publish at much greater scale. The key turning point was not simply adopting a new platform: after the station stopped funding the show, Kilmer chose to keep making car-advice content in a medium with a larger potential audience.
