The bigger concern is treating remote start as a reason to idle for a long time: warm-up advice depends on the vehicle, conditions and owner’s manual. Use the feature as your car maker intends, and never start the vehicle in an enclosed garage.
What remote start does—and what the evidence does not show
Remote start starts the vehicle so it can precondition the cabin or prepare for a drive. The exact behavior and run time vary by model. Volvo says its system can heat or cool the passenger compartment and limits each remote-start run to 15 minutes; its cited V60 guidance also limits users to two remote starts before a normal start is required. Honda describes cabin conditioning for the 2026 Accord. These are model-specific examples, not universal settings. Volvo V60 remote start; 2026 Honda Accord manuals.
The cited sources are manufacturer operating instructions, not controlled studies comparing long-term engine wear. They do not establish that remote start is harmless in every vehicle, nor do they quantify wear caused by remote starting or idling. The grounded takeaway is narrower: these sources do not support the claim that ordinary remote start itself is wrecking the engine.
How long should you idle before driving?
There is no single warm-up rule in the cited manuals. Follow the instructions for your exact model and the conditions you face rather than applying one car maker’s advice to every engine.

For the cited Kia guidance
Kia advises against waiting stationary for the engine to warm up and recommends driving at moderate speeds. Its guidance also calls for idling a cold engine for several seconds to ensure turbocharger lubrication. Those instructions apply to the cited Kia manual and should not be treated as a universal rule. Kia owner’s manual: engine start and operation.
For the cited Ford extreme-cold guidance
A vehicle-specific Ford manual calls for several minutes of idling before driving at -26 °C (-15 °F). It also notes: “Idling in cold weather does not heat the engine to its normal operating temperature.” The manual’s direction is for its vehicle and conditions, not a blanket recommendation for every Ford or every car. Ford owner manual: cold-weather operation.

Increase your remote start distance with a Start-X range extender kit (sold separately).
- Check the cold-start section of your owner’s manual, especially if your vehicle has a turbocharger or you regularly face severe cold.
- Use the manual’s instructions for how long to idle and how to drive immediately after starting.
- Do not assume that a longer idle is better simply because remote start makes it convenient.
Remote start versus a block heater in severe cold
These serve different purposes: remote start can precondition the cabin, while a block heater may help with engine starting in very low temperatures. The manufacturer sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison of their performance or cost, so neither can be called universally better. Check vehicle compatibility, the intended use and your manual’s instructions before choosing an approach.
For one specific Ford vehicle, the cited manual recommends an engine block heater at -23 °C (-9 °F) or colder. That threshold is not a general recommendation for other vehicles. Ford owner manual: engine block heater.

Safety and local idling rules matter
Never remote-start a vehicle in an enclosed garage or other confined space. Exhaust can cause poisoning or death. Mazda warns against starting in an enclosed space for this reason, and Volvo likewise says not to park indoors or in an enclosed area when using remote start. Mazda owner’s manual: exhaust gas precautions; Volvo V60 remote start.
Also check local rules before idling. Volvo explicitly advises users to follow applicable state, provincial and local laws. Rules vary by location, so do not assume that a remote-start feature exempts a vehicle from idling restrictions.

Habits that make remote start more sensible
- Use it for the preconditioning purpose and run time described in your manual.
- Respect automatic shutdown limits and any restriction on consecutive remote starts; these are model-specific controls.
- Once you set off, follow your manual’s cold-start and driving guidance rather than waiting for a universal temperature or time threshold.
- Keep the vehicle outdoors in an open, ventilated area while it is running.
- If very low temperatures make starting a recurring problem, check whether the vehicle maker recommends a compatible block heater for your model.
