You Might Pay More For Your Next Subaru (Because Of Tariffs)

Subaru buyers could pay more as tariffs continue to affect imported vehicles, parts, and raw materials. Here’s what the current tariff rules and 2026 prices mean.

Subaru buyers could pay more for a new vehicle if tariff-related costs continue to squeeze the automaker. Subaru has already raised prices during the tariff shock, and its latest financial results show that U.S. tariffs are still affecting profit—even though the impact was smaller in the quarter ending June 30, 2026.

That does not mean every new Subaru will receive a separate tariff surcharge, or that prices will automatically rise by 15% or 25%. The eventual price depends on Subaru’s MSRP decisions, dealer pricing, incentives, shipping costs, exchange rates, and the cost of imported vehicles and parts.

Subaru has already raised prices once

In May 2025, Subaru of America increased prices on several U.S.-market models. The company described the move as a response to “current market conditions,” rather than announcing a line-item tariff fee. Contemporary reports placed the increases at approximately $750 to $2,055, depending on the model and trim.

That increase did not necessarily represent the exact tariff paid on each vehicle. Automakers have several ways to respond to higher costs:

  • Change the mix of trims and equipment sold.
  • Absorb some of the cost and accept lower profit margins.
  • Pass higher costs through the supply chain over time.

So even if Subaru does not announce a “tariff surcharge,” buyers can still feel the effect through a higher sticker price, fewer incentives, or a less negotiable deal.

The tariff rate is not simply 25% today

The widely repeated 25% figure describes the additional Section 232 tariff the United States initially imposed on imported automobiles and automobile parts in 2025. It is not the best description of the current rate for covered Japanese vehicles and parts.

Under the U.S.-Japan agreement implemented in September 2025, the combined U.S. duty on qualifying Japanese automobiles and parts with a normal Column 1 duty below 15% was set at 15%. The change applied retroactively to qualifying Japanese products entered on or after August 7, 2025.

That distinction matters when evaluating claims that every Japanese-built Subaru is currently subject to a blanket 25% tariff. Such a claim is generally outdated unless it refers to the earlier 2025 period or a different tariff category.

American-built Subarus are still exposed

Subaru builds vehicles in Japan and at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. The Indiana plant produces about half of the Subarus sold in North America, including the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester. It also assembles the Forester Hybrid.

Final assembly in the United States does not make a vehicle completely insulated from tariffs. A U.S.-assembled Subaru can contain imported engines, components, steel, aluminum, and other materials. Subaru says its tariff exposure includes both finished vehicles imported from Japan and parts imported for its American production facilities.

In practical terms, a U.S.-built Forester or Ascent may avoid some of the direct cost attached to importing a finished Japanese vehicle, but its production costs can still increase when imported parts or raw materials become more expensive.

What Subaru models currently cost

Subaru’s advertised 2026 starting MSRPs are listed below:

Model 2026 starting MSRP
Impreza $26,595
Crosstrek $26,995
Forester $29,995
WRX $32,495
Outback $34,995
Uncharted $34,995
BRZ $35,860
Solterra $38,495
Trailseeker $39,995
Ascent $40,795

These are starting MSRPs, not guaranteed out-the-door prices. Destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer-installed accessories, financing charges, and dealer fees can push the final price higher. A dealer’s discount or manufacturer incentive can reduce it.

Why another price increase remains possible

Subaru’s financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, show that the tariff problem has eased but has not disappeared. Subaru reported revenue of ¥1,250.9 billion, up 3.0% year over year, but operating profit fell 44.3% to ¥42.6 billion.

The company said the impact of U.S. tariffs declined during the quarter. However, tariffs continued to affect operating profit alongside higher sales incentives, raw-material costs, and unfavorable market conditions. The decline in tariff impact is therefore not the same as a complete removal of tariff pressure.

Subaru’s full-year FYE2027 forecast, announced August 5, 2026, projects operating profit of ¥150 billion, compared with ¥40.1 billion in FYE2026. The forecast includes assumptions about exchange rates, product mix, production flexibility, and cost control. If those assumptions change—or if tariff costs rise again—Subaru could respond with higher prices or lower incentives.

What this means when you shop

  1. Check the actual window sticker. Compare the vehicle’s MSRP, destination charge, options, and accessories with Subaru’s advertised starting price.
  2. Ask for a complete out-the-door quote. The quote should identify the vehicle price, destination charge, taxes, registration, documentation fee, accessories, and any dealer add-ons.
  3. Question unexplained fees. There is no automatic government-mandated “Subaru tariff fee” that a dealer can simply add without identifying the charge. Ask whether an added amount is a dealer markup, an accessory, a documentation charge, or part of the vehicle’s advertised price.
  4. Compare incentives as well as MSRPs. A higher MSRP may be partly offset by financing support, lease programs, or dealer discounts. Conversely, a stable MSRP can still produce a more expensive purchase if incentives disappear.
  5. Get price protection in writing. If ordering or reserving a vehicle, ask what price applies if MSRP changes before delivery. Do not assume that a vehicle’s build date or existing inventory automatically locks in the old price.
  6. Compare similarly equipped vehicles. A lower starting price is not necessarily a lower deal if the vehicle requires costly options or dealer-installed accessories.

What buyers should not assume

  • A 25% tariff does not mean a 25% retail-price increase. Import duties are assessed in the supply chain, while the retail price also reflects margins, incentives, equipment, exchange rates, transportation, and demand.
  • A U.S.-assembled Subaru is not completely free from tariff exposure because imported parts and materials can still raise production costs.
  • A Japanese-built Subaru is not necessarily subject to the old 25% rate today. Covered Japanese automobiles and parts meeting the agreement’s conditions are generally subject to the 15% combined rate described above.
  • There is no evidence, as of August 9, 2026, that Subaru has announced a new tariff-specific surcharge for every U.S. model.
  • A vehicle already on a dealer’s lot is not automatically protected from a price change. The price depends on the dealer’s policy, Subaru’s pricing, inventory status, and any written agreement.

Will your next Subaru cost more?

It could. Tariffs remain one reason Subaru may raise prices, reduce incentives, or accept lower margins. The company’s latest results confirm that tariffs continue to affect its business, even though the impact declined in the latest quarter.

But buyers should not expect an automatic tariff line on every purchase or assume the full tariff rate will be added to the sticker price. Subaru and its dealers set the transaction price, and the final amount will depend on the specific model, trim, inventory, incentives, fees, and timing of the purchase.

FAQ

Is Subaru adding a tariff surcharge to every 2026 model?

No. As of August 9, 2026, Subaru had not announced a new tariff-specific surcharge for every U.S.-market model. Tariff costs can still influence MSRP, incentives, dealer pricing, and profit margins.

Are Japanese-built Subarus still subject to a 25% tariff?

Not generally under the current U.S.-Japan framework. For covered Japanese automobiles and parts with a normal Column 1 duty below 15%, the combined U.S. duty was set at 15% for qualifying products entered on or after August 7, 2025.

Are Subarus built in Indiana protected from tariffs?

Not completely. The Indiana plant assembles the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester, but U.S.-built vehicles can still use imported parts, engines, steel, aluminum, and other materials affected by tariff policies.

How can I avoid paying more than Subaru’s advertised price?

Request an itemized out-the-door quote, compare dealer and manufacturer incentives, question unexplained add-ons, and get any promised price protection in writing. The starting MSRP does not include every tax, fee, accessory, or financing cost.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Tariffs have already increased Subaru’s costs and could make a future Subaru more expensive, but there is no automatic tariff fee and no basis for assuming every model will rise by 25% or even 15%. Check the complete out-the-door price, not just the MSRP, and ask the dealer to identify every added charge.
